@nix @QuadratureSurfer A lot of alt-med and quackery is like that. They latch on to a single term or phrase or thing from actual scientific medicine, use it differently, and make absurd weird claims about what can be done from there.

It's time to call a spade a spade. ChatGPT isn't just hallucinating. It's a bullshit machine.

From TFA (thanks @mxtiffanyleigh for sharing):

"Bullshit is 'any utterance produced where a speaker has indifference towards the truth of the utterance'. That explanation, in turn, is divided into two "species": hard bullshit, which occurs when there is an agenda to mislead, or soft bullshit, which is uttered without agenda.

"ChatGPT is at minimum a soft bullshitter or a bullshit machine, because if it is not an agent then it can neither hold any attitudes towards truth nor towards deceiving hearers about its (or, perhaps more properly, its users') agenda."

@davel Very well said. I'll continue to call it bullshit because I think that's still a closer and more accurate term than "hallucinate". But it's far from the perfect descriptor of what AI does, for the reasons you point out.

15 years ago, the Greens started warning that we needed to start preparing and planning the transition from coal to renewable energy.

The Libs responding by gaslighting and saying things like “You can’t shut down coal energy overnight!”, something the Greens were in no way shape or form asking for.

The media simply quoted the Libs. Their excuse? “We WeRe JuSt TeLlInG yOu WhAt ThEy SaId!”. Never quoted what the Greens actually wanted, or actually analyzed the situation, just QuOtEd WhAt ThEy SaId! The Liberals and those talking complete and utter horse shit. While burying their heads in the sand about energy transition.

Now, we’re in a situation where coal plants are shutting down ahead of the 15 years ago schedule, renewable sources have been delayed massively, and many don’t have power lines heading to them nor are connected to the grid properly. We are in the EXACT problem situation the Greens were warning about 15 years ago.

The media won’t take responsibility for their one-sided citing and TeLlInG yOu WhAt ThEy SaId. They’ll just write articles pretending that never happened, glossing over their part in it.

We’re in for hard times. All caused by the Liberal governments of the last 15 years. And Labor especially now aren’t exactly any better. And caused by the media failing to do their actual jobs.

So, over in the astronomy world there is some consternation about a tweet from eminent satellite tracker Jonathan McDowell.

Apparently "Starlink Precipitation" is now a thing. And yes, you got that right, Starlink precipitation is pieces of Elon Musk's fucking internet satellites raining down from space.

@mastodonmigration Didn't we know this was going to be a thing when starlink was launching due to the orbit it's in? Weren't starlink satelites built with this in mind, made a size they should burn up safely?

That's what I was lead to believe a number of years ago. If it's wrong, I'm happy to be corrected.

Australian Senator Ralph Babet has decided it's perfectly OK to share video footage of an attempted murder online. And has made this point by sharing a video of an actual attempted murder online. #AusPol https://www.thenewdaily.com.au/news/national/2024/04/23/ralph-babet-wakeley-church-terror

I discovered @parismarx's #TechWontSaveUs podcast when they were doing a special on Musk last October. And this episode on enshittification is one of the best ones since.

I highly recommend giving it a listen, and adding the podcast to your regular weekly feeds.

Fake LastPass app sneaks past Apple's review team.

This is a rare occurrence in Apple's walled garden hence it being newsworthy. In Android I get people at work asking me "which blah app" all the time due to the number of imposters.

And for those wondering which LastPass app is the right one. My recommendation is BitWarden or 1Password. Not LastPass at all.

I’m in a long line for the bag drop at the airport. A robotic cart joined the queue. It alternated between demanding people move in Japanese and English, and voicing the same demands at a variety of barriers.

People have done their best to acquiesce to its demands, but it’s now stationary and shouting in multiple languages.

Elon Musk has long opposed unions, but now he’s taking his war on workers to an entirely new level.

In Sweden, Tesla wants to blow up the Nordic labor model, while SpaceX is echoing the Federalist Society by trying to destroy the NLRB in the United States. He must be stopped.

@parismarx This was overdue IMHO due to the way he looks upon other people as NPC's. As not actual human beings.
