June 1, 2020 – Declaring himself “your president of law and order,” Trump threatened to summon “all available federal resources — civilian and military” — to quell protesters who demanded justice after the killing of George Floyd. He referred to demonstrators as “an angry mob.”

Democracy survives and thrives only when everyone can participate and have confidence that the rules are not rigged against them. But in recent years, billionaires have deployed their fortunes to influence candidates and elected officials at every level of government and even tried to sway the judiciary. We must tax billionaires fairly to protect democracy, and we must protect democracy to tax billionaires fairly.

Trump has said FOUR times that he will withhold federal funding from schools that require vaccines. Not just COVID. ALL.

This is most schools. This is hitting me where I work. This will lead to children dead from measles. It's obvious, inevitable.

Someone on here said they just couldn't bear to vote for Biden to keep Trump from office since at least under Trump there were better masking rules.

I hope that person sees this.

Worse is worse.

edit: because I don't know measles from smallpox

The consequences of getting one of these diseases can be life altering or even deadly.

Paul Alexander developed polio at the age of 6. The disease left Paul paralyzed from the neck down and unable to breathe on his own. He was placed in an iron lung, a large metal cylinder that varies air pressure to stimulate breathing. Paul died at age 78, accomplishing more than anyone thought was possible.

[ Contracted polio in 1952 - No vaccination was available.]

50 billionaire families have already spent $600 million on the 2024 elections.

More than half—$416 million—went to Republicans or conservative groups that want to extend Trump's tax cuts for the rich.

Could there be a clearer example of how big money corrupts our democracy?

Unionized Apple store workers in MD voted to authorize a strike.

Apple has been accused of not bargaining in good faith over pay.

But since contract talks began, Apple has announced ~$150 BILLION in stock buybacks.

I don't want to hear that Apple can't afford to pay workers.

Trump pledged to scrap President #Biden’s policies on #ElectricVehicles & #wind #energy, as well as other initiatives opposed by the #FossilFuel industry.

As he sat w/some of the country’s top #oil execs at his Mar-a-Lago Club last month, one exec complained how they continued to face burdensome #environmental #regulations despite spending $400M to lobby the #Biden admin…

I can confidently diagnose #betterhelp as sociopaths.

Promised therapy customers privacy...then gave their mental health info to advertisers.

Victims get less than ten bucks each.

Company made billion+ in revenue last year alone.

In a just society with good privacy laws, they'd face existential civil & criminal consequences.

A 7.8 million fine is of course chump change for a company with 1,000 million + in revenue.

Proposal : Add a year in prison for the CEO and CFO. That will get their attention !

#SCOTUS is hearing a challenge today to a federal #law prosecutors used to charge >350 people who attacked the Capitol on #Jan6.
>100 have been convicted & sentenced under the statute for obstructing or impeding an ofcl proceeding—the joint session that convened to confirm Biden’s victory.

The case could impact #Trump’s federal trial in DC for trying to remain in power, 2 charges he faces are based on the same #obstruction statute.

... Brian Klaas joins us to debunk a common misconception about wealth – that all those who have it are smarter than average. Klaas uses probability to explain that though this is an easy assumption to make, it’s technically not correct.

Thinking smarter and working harder does not always make you rich; most of the time, it’s just about being positioned at the luckiest spot on the bell curve.

Might be possible to reach some of the weabo nerds obsessed with the superiority of Japan by educating them on the history of labor (not all labor, but some) has been supported & respected in governing institutions & granted access to power.

To this day Japan's government provides remarkable support for "Traditional Japanese Crafts" (there is of course controversy about what properly fits in that category)

But, that's WHY so many Japanese goods are just better made. We could do it too.

The same applies to Culture as it does to Biology, Economics and many other fields.

A single idea Monopolizing the mind is a bad thing. It prevents us from finding solutions to issues, that otherwise might be solved through completely new mindsets or paradigm's.

Try a thousand different things and succeed at some is a beter evolutionary strategy, than being stuck in a tunnel vision with no viable ideas.

We need lots of sensible differing viewpoints.

I am reminded of this :
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jarndyce_and_Jarndyce

The second of these cases is generally identified as the dispute over the will of the "Acton Miser" William Jennens of Acton, Suffolk. Jennens v Jennens commenced in 1798 and was abandoned in 1915 (117 years later) when the legal fees had exhausted the Jennens estate of funds; thus it had been ongoing for 55 years when Bleak House was published.

    Free book

    The End of Loser Liberalism.
    Chapter 1

    . . .

The political system and the “free market” are rigged to the advantage of the rich and powerful, which makes it difficult for progressives to make headway in pushing policies that advance the interests of everyone else.

There are enormous obstacles in our path, but if we don’t know where we are going, then we can be absolutely sure that we are not going to get there.
