How did you come up with your username?

I’ll go first, it’s simple, the Internet is literally an open field where anyone can do whatever they want.

The first part is my first name, and I used to be in a punk band called Suspect Package.

Can you live without YouTube ?

Today in a Privacy community a post about YouTube. No word about privacy but all about which software or settings are needed to watch videos and the money needed to host videos. It made me wonder whether some of you can lead a meaningful life without YouTube. Or will a cold turkey bring the worst out of you ?

alansuspect ,

I don't get the appeal of YouTube. I use it for maybe the odd music video or something, but often you'll just get someone's annoying commentary instead of the actual thing.

I live without it and it's great! Try it.

alansuspect ,

The people that say it's their main form of entertainment must have to wade through so much crap to get to anything good, I just don't see the point.

alansuspect ,

Yeah I guess if you've been using it for a long time and have favourites built up that would work. I remember when YouTube started and it was pretty good, but with every video trying to game the algorithms I couldn't imagine trying to start afresh now.

All of these AI prompts sound like begging. We're begging computers to do things for us now.

Thoughts about Posteo?

I've thinking about ditching my Protonmail email address with Posteo since I need IMAP support (because I hate using the Protonmail app) and honestly paying for Proton Mail Plus didn't worth the money because they are pushing me to buy the Protonmail Unlimited but I don't need all those capabilities nor would I use them and the...

alansuspect ,

I just ditched Proton Unlimited after moving to it last year from Google. The Drive app just never worked properly. Ended up going with Fastmail for email as I'm in Australia anyway and so far they've been good.

This is a level of innovation that only certified geniuses could come up with

It took me way too long to realise the keys on my keyboard are uppercase. Is this really something people worry about? What happens when I want a capital letter, do I need a different Google keyboard?!

I'm sure someone somewhere is happy with themselves.

alansuspect ,

BYD sells their cars in Australia and we have high safety standards, I don't think they'd need to change much for the US

alansuspect ,

I did some very quick searching, according to this https://carnewschina.com/2022/12/29/new-2023-byd-dolphin-launched-in-china-price-starts-at-16700-usd/ the Dolphin launched in China for ~AUD$25,400 and you can currently buy it in Australia from AUD$38,890.

So it's obviously more but they have their government discounts. Depending on the state here you can get rebates too.

Currently reading A Desolation Called Peace by Arkady Martine. There's also a first book called A Memory Called Empire and both are very good.

alansuspect ,

I read Sleep recently, it's really good!

alansuspect ,

I read through all of them a couple of years ago, he's one of my favourite writers and all the books are pretty good. They jump around a lot and try different things which keep it interesting, from what I remember.

alansuspect ,

How do you become a beta reader?

alansuspect ,

The red ones? We have those too but I think they're just called party cups. Put some Solo in there and you'd have a Solo Solo Cup!

alansuspect ,

They use it as a substitute for egg whites in cocktails, and honestly it's better.

alansuspect ,

What's wrong with being anti capitalist? I mean, if capitalism was so good I'm sure people would post pro-capitalism memes, no?

alansuspect ,

At least then we'd know for sure.

Stick shift drivers - would you get an electric vehicle?

I'm stuck on this personally. I love my manual, I have a tiny little Mazda 2 and I have driven that thing absolutely everywhere because I can control it better than any automatic I've ever driven. But I've been casually looking for a new car and I'd love to have an electric, but I don't want to lose that level of control and...

alansuspect ,

Where I'm from most people drive manuals, then I moved to Aus and autos were more popular but I stuck with manuals mostly as I wasn't a fan of the clunkiness in autos. EVs are completely different to automatics, they drive so smoothly and they're great. I say that as a life-long manual driver.

I assume all trailers on YouTube are fake

They want a tip at self-serve? That's ridiculous!

alansuspect ,

I'm not USA, I can never be 100% sure.

alansuspect ,

I keep hearing about Kagi, are they reputable? I moved from Google to DDG and I do a fair bit of searching so I would be interested, but I guess there's a bit of a one-company-knowing-my-search-history going on (totally unironically).

alansuspect ,

I haven't heard of this before, but why is a reader a threat to a company? What's the issue?
