Hi all, I am Tormod šŸ‡³šŸ‡“šŸ‡øšŸ‡Ŗ (he / him)

My days are spent as a consultant in enterprise IT organizations, mainly focusing on teamwork and the people side of delivery. In particular with coaching, processes and enabling teams to work better together across departments and vendors.

My passions are in the areas of #photography, #graphicdesign, #typography and #music. And, of course, family ā¤ļø

Happy to talk to anyone, and I will assume you're awesome until proven otherwise.

Today is my last day at IBM.

I joined Netrex in February 1999 as a Unix admin

In late 1999 Internet Security Security Systems bought Netrex, largely for its managed services business.

In October 2006, when I was the director of IT, IBM bought ISS largely for its managed services business.

I was given lots of opportunities at IBM. Twice I found myself in the wrong place at the wrong time and was on a list to be let go, but other parts of IBM decided to pick me up. I once resigned to take a job at Deloitte, and at the time my manager told me that didnā€™t work for anyone and made it worth my while to stay. For many years, I led an incident response function for the strategic outsourcing business, which was later spun off to be what is now Kyndryl. I learned a LOT. I learned so much, in fact, that I decided to start a podcast in 2012, partly to make myself smarter, and partly in hopes that I could help the industry avoid the mistakes I was seeing our clients make on a near daily basis. I have deep scars from all the big security events of the 2010ā€™s - heartbleed, shellshock, wannacry, notpetya, and many others.

In 2019, I was leading an internal practice around cyber regulations (in addition to the IR role) and ended up helping the cloud business out of a sticky situation. Unbeknownst to me, cloud had been looking to replace their CISO, and in March 2020, they offered me the job. My first big test was leading Cloud through Covid.

I had the extreme privilege to lead a team of 184 remarkably talented professionals. We did some cool things, but I regret the long list of things that didnā€™t get done.

As well published in the news, IBM took a hard line on return to office, particularly for executives. They gave people like me a choice: relocate to a key site (Atlanta was not one of them) and work from the office 3 days a week (with tight attendance tracking), or be let go. I have been working from home full time since shortly after IBM bought ISS in 2006 - nearly 18 years. I spend about 1/3 of my time at my beach place, which I was not willing to part with. Plus, I fundamentally disagree with the return to office approach and with how people have been treated, so I opted to ā€œlet it happenā€, and so today is the day IBM terminates me.

Iā€™ve saved up enough money that I can take a break for a while. Itā€™s been 32 years since Iā€™ve had more than a week off work, and at least 20 since Iā€™ve had any sort of vacation that wasnā€™t disrupted by urgent meetings, crises, and so on. Iā€™m going to spend some time with my family, especially my extremely patient wife, in ways that I havenā€™t been able to.

I have a very long list of things Iā€™ll be doing during this downtime. I intend to get back into podcasting; I am going to write some including maybe a book; I am going to focus more on the fediverse instances I manage to ensure they are enduring; I am going to way too many baseball games with my wife (she is a mega baseball fan); and I am going to take way too many pictures and hopefully find some creative ways to make money with those pics.

TL;DR: today is the end of a long journey for me, and the start of a new one. And itā€™s a good day.

I also spent many good years with IBM, in many ways a great company to work for. This RTO policy will be an expensive lesson for them, guessing they are loosing a lot of great talent like yourself to a misguided principle here.

Anyway - from your story, it seems you suck at vacation, so happy to hear you finally get to develop those skills too :) Enjoy!

Morning everyone. Overslept, and the oversleeping period was a very unpleasant dream. Ugh. I don't feel any less tired either for that.

Listening on random to a big general playlist of soul and funk songs because I don't know what I might want to listen to more specifically. The song on right now as I write this is Time Is Tight by Booker T & the MGs, so you can enjoy that with me. https://youtu.be/50xx1_CbJTI

Oh dang, I always thought that was just the live intro to "Can't turn you Loose" and not its own thing. šŸ˜®

I had the good fortune to catch Booker T live at a festival once. He had a younger band at the time, but such an elegant gentleman and a wicked good player!

Between 2016 and 2022, , through burning, was responsible for 25.79% of global emissions. (And another 3.21% from cement manufacture). Even looked at historically (between 1854 and 2022), Chinese coal is responsible for 14% of global CO2 emissions over this 168 year period.

Is this a problem?

Huge problem, but how does it translate into per capita emissions? Guess us westerners might be high up on that list?

A special Holy Week quiz ... do you believe in ?

airwhale ,
@airwhale@mastodon.social avatar

@ariadne

Religion is a human way of trying to explain the divine - forces that are beyond our capacity to comprehend. Like life itself, love, the universe... Most teachings also include good advice on how to treat others and lead a good life.

Each society needed this, so they evolved in relative isolation, from common core values but with wildly differing explanation models. All equally valid in its context. This got written down in holy books.

Of course a God can write multiple books.

Billionaires have seen their fortunes surge by $2 trillion+ since the Trump tax cuts.

What's the GOP doing about it? Doubling down. They're trying to permanently extend provisions of the law that disproportionately benefit the rich.

Itā€™s crystal clear who they work for.
