  • Are a good home for a K12 (and sometimes K16) education account.
  • Have good moderation.

I have some older, back-of-the-pantry green teas that I am thinking of reviving by roasting, a la hojicha.

There was a time when the naturally occurring stimulant compound found in the leaves of the yerba mate was called "mateine", and then it was determined that it was not distinct from caffeine and the misnomer was dropped (in reputable circles).

I'm curious: How was mateine misidentified in the first place? How did the correction come to take place?

If anyone here happens to know, I'm all ears.

Question for security-minded people:

How are you handling video calls in light of Win 11 Recall / Copilot?

I do not consent to other people randomly recording me. How on earth do I vet everyone's operating systems for work calls?

Right now I am angry & thus not framing the question elegantly. For the love of all that's holy, do not lecture me about asking the wrong question or in the wrong way.

If you have mandatory work video calls, how are you handling this yourself?

Parents of teens, I need a book recommendation!

This is to appease some well-meaning but overtly Christian and out-of-touch family members. Something for a 12yo who reads well above his age, along the lines of inspiration/motivation for teens to be good humans and members of society

Rather than have them pushing propaganda on my son I’d like to find a worthwhile read they will feel addresses the insufficient Christian influence in his life

@kaleb @philip_cardella If biographies work, you might also go with "Walking with the Wind", the autobiography of the late Congressman John Lewis. It's an easy to read book with a profound message about public service, and it includes his years training to be a minister that might go over well with the relatives.

I've talked a friend into joining Mastodon! I would love help to find her a good instance.

She's a brilliant creative person. I think for her first instance, something low key and social would be good. She's not looking for a regional or special interest server, just a general home base to get started. I'm looking for something small to medium-sized with good admins that's part of the Fedipact.

@luckytran I keep putting off activities that are too high risk for me (administrative tasks that have to happen in person eventually, medical care, things like that), in the hopes that one day we'll have policies that are not designed to kill me, and instead everything keeps getting worse. The stress of that, on top of the external reality, combined with the wholesale gaslighting... is a lot.
