There was a time when the naturally occurring stimulant compound found in the leaves of the yerba mate was called "mateine", and then it was determined that it was not distinct from caffeine and the misnomer was dropped (in reputable circles).
I'm curious: How was mateine misidentified in the first place? How did the correction come to take place?
