Their scale was also an insignificant fraction of what Netflix has, making the point even more irrelevant.

The best figure I could find on Jetflicks user count was 37k, where as Netflix has 269 million users.

GissaMittJobb ,

The demand is basically artificial since there are a limited amount of calculator models that are allowed to be used on tests at universities. Since they can get away with it, they keep charging these prices.

A hug is a standard greeting between well-acquainted men in Sweden, so yeah. I hug my friends and family.

I don't think this line of reasoning is strictly speaking correct, but assuming it was, then I think it would follow that Kotlin exists and as such C# does not need to be kept around.

GissaMittJobb ,

I didn't graduate from university.

In order to get some more money, I decided to take a TA-position at the school.

For context, I live in Sweden - university costs nothing to attend here, and you get access to a mix of governmental assistance and near-zero interest loans (at about 1/3 assistance 2/3 loans) to finance your living costs while attending university. To get this money you are required to get passing grades in a certain percentage of the courses you take, around 75% is required). If you do not meet these requirements, you lose your benefits, and quickly risk not being able to afford food and rent.

This TA-position however took up more time than I thought it would, and as such, I didn't manage to pass the courses I was taking. Since I no longer met the passing grades requirement, I could no longer get student loans and assistance, meaning that I had to keep working TA gigs to stay afloat. This finally became untenable, and I decided to drop out and move to another city and look for work.

So far, it's worked out extremely well. I've been ridiculously lucky.

WFH means less carbon emissions, less time wasted in traffic, and less time literally putting your life at risk from vehicle collisions.

It speaks volumes that all of these problems are car-related. The whole push for WFH is a massive condemnation of how badly people actually feel about the effects of the car-oriented development that the U.S has been spending so much time championing.

As far as I know, this particular arrangement is known as a Completo Italiano, since the ingredients have the same colours as the Italian flag (red tomatoes, green avocado and white mayonnaise).

GissaMittJobb ,

That's interesting to hear that you put some garlic on the avocados - the Chileans I know don't do that, but they left the country in the late 70's. I wonder if this is done by personal preference or if there was a 'culinary branch' created from them emigrating.

I'm also a little surprised to hear about the use of ketchup - I would guess that the red sauce was Aji.

(This is absolutely not an attempt to criticize your food, I am of the firm belief that all Completos are awesome no matter what)

A business-coded variant you can use if you want is "I don't have the bandwidth for that". It's been effective for me so far.

I genuinely enjoy Buckfast and I refuse to be ashamed of it.

I think the description of the flavours were largely apt, barring the negative connotations. When thought about as its own category of beverage I think they can be pleasant. Just don't think you're going to be getting some wine, because that's not really what it is.

GissaMittJobb ,

Box wine is actually a staple in Sweden where I live, but again without the negative connotations. Great way to be able to enjoy wine in moderation without having it spoil early - having to either commit to finishing a full bottle or have it spoil is a major hassle.

GissaMittJobb ,

A good wine does not have to be expensive. I actually should not be.

Hard agree, price is a feature. My favourite wines are generally Chilean or Argentinian for less than €10 a bottle, and they are out of this world as far as flavour is concerned.

GissaMittJobb ,

I believe I already have, but I'll make sure to give it a more intentional try next time I buy wine. Cheers!

The options hot/cold are not present on washing machines in Europe, and instead you get these temperature gradings, generally they go from 30 °C to 90 °C. All water is collected from the cold water line and then heated inside the washing machine itself.

Since 30 °C is the lowest the machines usually go, we can't even wash in cold water even if we want to. Kind of a pity.

GissaMittJobb ,

They are common among parents of most if not all classes in Sweden.

GissaMittJobb ,

It's going to depend on where you are, but there's usually some form of transit here in Sweden in all but the most rural places. Outside of cities, there's a decent chance you'll get a car anyway because the transit is not of high enough quality, unfortunate as it may be.

That being said, where I live in Stockholm, transit takes me everywhere I want to go, including longer distances to visit my family that lives far from Stockholm in the form of decently high speed trains. My bicycle is also a great way to get around the city.

I'm very pleased with not having to own a car, it saves me a lot of money and effort, and my transport time is spent more productively - when biking, I get exercise while listening to podcasts, and on transit I can use my phone freely to do whatever I want. It's also generally a less frustrating way to get around, not having to be stuck in traffic or spend time, effort and money to park. It's also basically at no loss of time compared to driving for the majority of my trips. All this on top of being a better option from an environmental standpoint. I'm very happy!

GissaMittJobb ,

Yeah, they don't care that senior talent left because that was the whole point.

GissaMittJobb ,

30 minutes by bike or transit, but it's about to be a lot shorter due to an upcoming move.

I can work fully from home if I so wish, but I choose to go into the office as the perks are great and I like seeing people.

While commuting by bike, I listen to a lot of podcasts. While on transit I usually do a lot of Duolingo.

It's still unlikely to pencil out to do this given the opportunity cost of actually going through the effort of building, buying and connecting these things, to be honest.

I'm fascinated by the idea but it's important to remain realistic.

Here's a good article on the concept of bicycle generators: https://solar.lowtechmagazine.com/2022/03/how-to-build-a-practical-household-bike-generator/

Personally, I think the best application of this concept is probably direct use of the mechanical energy, without converting the energy to electricity at all. See the bicimaquinas-concept: http://www.mayapedal.org/index.en

One of the wonderful things about bicycles is how extraordinarily efficient they are - very little energy is required in relation to how much transportation work you get out of it. This works against us in the case of power generation, though - little power going in means little power going out.

It's a tool like any other, appropriate under some circumstances and inappropriate in others.

Blindly rejecting it without considering whether it's appropriate in the context is honestly just as bad as choosing it without considering whether it's appropriate in the context, fwiw.

GissaMittJobb OP ,

I'm gonna give this one a shot. Thank you!

GissaMittJobb OP ,

I'd be interested in this as well.

I follow the Duolingo Spanish Podcast, which has had some moderately interesting stories over the years, but I'd like to hear something a bit more challenging for sure.

Automated tests are pretty common, yes. It's not strictly speaking a matter of company size, but moreso company technical maturity.

Automated tests do not slow your business down, it is in fact the only way to not get slowed down as the amount of code you maintain increases.

The alternative cost of not having tests catch issues before they reach production is very significant - an error caught by an automated test costs nothing, while an error that makes it into production can cause immense harm to the business, if only for the time necessary to remediate the issue, which is time that could have been spent on actually making progress on delivering new features.

Not to mention the high cost of having to employ increasing amounts of manual testers just to keep the worst of issues from slipping through.

All in all, not having automated tests in place is a significant mistake from a business perspective. You might want to have a frank discussion with your CTO about it.

Just made for a good border-point, really.

This is all imagined though as I refuse to recognize the sovereignty of Finland and Norway - long live the Great Swedish Empire

Finally a healthy BMI ( lemmy.world )

Two years ago, I was on the low end for BMI range. I went overseas and didn’t have a place to exercise. Despite walking everywhere, as transportation in that country, I put on weight. I blame it on having what I think was a sinus infection for a while. When I’m sick, I tend to eat more. Anyway, I gained a lot of weight over...

Is it worth the solar panels I'm getting? ( lemmy.world )

I'm sorry for posting this here. There isn't a solar panel instance, nor did I see anything for electricians. I know there's been a lot of gripe with certain solar companies (solgen being in litigation, and others) but I didn't hear much about freedom forever, since they're new to Seattle area where I'm doing this. Reddit seems...

Straya is living in the year 3024 with regards to solar. We're all very jealous of your success in this particular endeavor.

They've got better conditions with regards to the amount of sunlight, yes, but I was mainly referring to the incredible price tag of the installed system.

  • General purpose LLMs are starting to replace everyday queries I used to posit to Google. Perplexity can be quite good for this.
  • Copilot as enhanced autocomplete when writing code. A particularly good use-case is writing tests: with a few test cases already written, a sufficiently good test name will most often generate a well-written test case.
  • LLMs for lazy generation of SQL queries can sometimes be quite nice.
  • Writing assistance for things I find myself struggling to get written by myself. A writing unblocking tool, if you will.

It's reducing the effort and time I have to put into some things, and I appreciate that. It's far from perfect, but it doesn't have to be perfect to be useful.

Price is unfortunately not a reliable proxy for quality. That's kind of why communities like BuyItForLife exist.

Granted, the marketers are catching up to this and as such they are losing their usefulness, but yeah.

GissaMittJobb , (edited )

A few things come to mind:

  1. The array is probably fine. It's not going to be particularly large and lookups are O(1)
  2. It's a bit weird to me that you're using the char pointers as indices. I would probably use actual indices and spend the miniscule amount of additional stack data to improve the clarity of the code
  3. You could save on some indentation by returning early instead of nesting the for-loop inside the first if-statement
  4. Is the call to the lookup-table really safe? Maybe checking that the token from RNA is within the bounds is the way to go?
  5. The only thing I would even remotely care about with regards to performance is the malloc, and that's not that big of a deal anyway unless the length of dna is really large. Streaming the result or overwriting the presumably already malloc'd input would be the only thing I would touch, and only if I could prove that it improves performance in practice.
  6. (added in edit): if you can guarantee that the input is well formed, you can omit the bounds check and save some effort there.
GissaMittJobb ,

A switch statement is probably a decent option here, yeah. You trade off a little bit of memory for what might be a few more instructions executing the switch statement, unless the compiler picks up on it and optimizes it. Maybe check godbolt for what gets generated in practice if you really care about it.

Bone conduction headphones?

I just recently learned that this is a thing that exists. I've had a couple audiology tests that use these weird headphones with firm rubber balls where normally expect to see the speakers; the rubber balls sit on your temporal bone, and there's a metal bar the wraps around your head connecting them and giving them pressure to...

GissaMittJobb ,

Which brand/model are you using?

Aftershokz Aeropex

How's the sound quality?

Not great, but they are not headphones I use for audiophile-purposes

How's the sound leak?

No idea tbh - a bit more than in-ears/over-ears I guess?

What kind of music do you use it to listen to?

Hardly any. If I want music, I have other hardware for that. My primary use for these headphones is to listen to podcasts while exercising

Are they comfortable to wear? For how long?

You don't really notice them. I use them for hours on end for long cycling trips and they work well for that

Do you get any skin irritation or even breakdown where it contacts your temple?

I have not noticed any

Does the hook part wrap around your ears without any pressure points?

Yes

Does the behind-the-head band bounce around when you're walking or running?

Not noticably

How much space is between the band and the back of your head/neck?

A few centimeters, less than five.

How's the battery life?

A full charge maybe gets you 8 hours I think? I never let my devices go that low, though

How long have you had it?

2 years

When do you use it?

While exercising to listen to podcasts

Do they stay put, or do you need to reposition them frequently?

They stay where they are. It can be annoying to put on/take off shirts though as they can easily get stuck in them

Anything else to comment on?

I really enjoy my headphones, but they are most certainly not good for music imo. Still, it makes my rotation, which is mostly these plus a pair of buds that go in my pocket for all other listening purposes

I've heard it said that the boiling point of water is 100 °C, and the boiling point of milk is the moment you look away for a second.
