At first it is hard to believe that most people don't pay much attention to politics. Most people don't know what "project 24" is or the significance of the phrase "obstructing an official procedure" (maybe you are such a person) --but, when I think about how tense, nervous and occasionally helpless political news makes me feel I totally get it. Also, a lot of this stuff is boring and kind of technical.

"EDC" (Every Day Carry) has become a catch all term for men's accessories, jewelry, cool knives, ninja stars and ... fidget spinners? It's a very strange market niche, and a premium item are fancy decorative beads.

Here are some of the currently popular motifs.

Zombi Trump
Einstein
Jesus
The Late Great Hannibal Lecter

I'm very confused. This reminds me of how a certain kind of boy in college always had a poster of "Scarface" in their room. Is that what "Silence of the Lambs" has become?

Beads of Einstein's head
A bead of Trump on one side it's a zombi
Anthony Hopkins in the face mask as in the movie Silence of the lambs... but it's a bead.

Exciting ant queen collecting trip in AZ. Why does it feel like all the coolest ants are in the South and South West. It's not fair.

Someone in my building is BLASTING "New York New York"

Which is traditionally done after yankee games if they win in our building.

LOL.

These AI SEO spam operations have used lists of common searches to ensure that their pages come up first in searches in the “long fat tail” the kind of search where it used to be about 50/50 if you’d find a page addressing your needs. But, it used to be if you found something like “The top 15 smallest ants in the world” it wouldn’t be nonsense. It’d either exist and be the work of another person who cared OR you found nothing. Not so now! I can’t possibly over-stress how bad this is! 1/

Perhaps a new age will dawn, where we turn to WikiPedia first, and Google’s stock tanks.

Which best describes you?

("records" in this context are shellac, vinyl or resin etc. recorded sound discs played using needle)

If you have some records you can play and others you can't choose the third option.

If you have a player but it's broken choose the first option.

You "own" a player if one is in your home and you can use it when you want.

You "own" records if you are one of the people who must be asked if they were sold or thrown away.

I have both, so that’s how I voted, but TBH I now have only 3-4 records, and my turntable is in storage. I have ~150 CDs, which I “play” by ripping them to a SIM card & putting that in my old HTC Vivid phone which is out of service & only good as a (poor by comparison) camera & Bluetooth-connected music player

Someone said it's important say this publicly in the US: so I will. (And I think each of us should, online and to friends)

This November I will vote for Biden.

I would regard not voting for Biden, particularly in: PA, OH, MI, WI, IN, IL,VA, GA, FL, AZ, ME, NC, NH, etc. as a huge error. I'd be disappointed to find out anyone I knew didn't vote. It's one of a long list of things we need to do. We can't skip it.

And still? We deserve better choices, and in the future we shall have them.

Also, petition and advocate for changes to electoral systems such as “single transferable vote” or “ranked-choice voting” that crack open the door to third parties!

Are there actually neuroscientists who dont believe that most invertebrates, fish, etc. have lowercase-c consciousness, an internal subjective experience of the world? Is the alternative that they are just reflex machines? Why wouldnt we make the opposite assumption - that animals that have a complex enough nervous system to run a whole body thats responsive to their ecosystem are "conscious" until proven otherwise. But what would the point be of proving otherwise? I guess im just deeply uninterested in semantic games that exclude most of the animal kingdom from the assumption of mere subjectivity.

This is so cool I don't totally understand it but basically the density of galaxies (not stars! galaxies) in the universe looks a little like a pond where someone tossed in a bunch of rocks-- if the pond somehow froze just after the first ripples formed.

The period of the ripples means something about how much the universe expanded in the early days.

I don't understand why or how it "froze" ... but it's still super neat.

@futurebird
AIUI, cosmic inflation https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inflation_(cosmology) is what caused the “freezing” of the density variations — regions of the observable universe that were close enough to approach thermodynamic equilibrium were moved far apart.
