You've got to love the irony here. He complained for years that people entering at the southern border were criminals and shouldn't be allowed in and now essentially other countries are saying the same thing about him.

Professorozone ,

When I was a kid, an older kid peer-pressured me into smoking a cigarette. I smoked the whole thing and quickly noped out of that. Can't believe I made the best decision of my life at the age of 6.

Professorozone ,

No, this makes perfect sense. It's difficult to understand what he means because he keeps saying "people" should pay. If he means consumers when he says people, that would be perfectly consistent. Corporations pollute like crazy and "people" should be charged for it. That's capitalism, right?

Side of bed debate - Which side is left?

Which side of the bed is the left side? Is the answer based on the perspective of laying in the bed (person's head at the head end)? Is the answer based on viewing it from the foot of the bed, looking at the head of the bed? Is there an "anatomical position" or special terminology like in boating for this?...

Professorozone ,

I have no idea. Like others I usually request the side closest to the bathroom since I go during the night more often than her. I could see it either way.

Professorozone ,

An e-bike. I used my regular bike for errands but the e-bike just made it so much easier to pedal in high winds or when I was hauling my trailer full of groceries. Plus it increased my range because I knew I could go farther in the same amount of time. I bought a class 1 e-bike so I always have to pedal, like a normal bike. Because I use it more, I think I actually get MORE exercise despite the assist. I really love it.

Professorozone ,

Not to dampen your effort, but SCOTUS doesn't create laws. Just FYI.

Professorozone ,

While I agree that billionaires need to start paying their way, I cannot get on board with taxing someone for dying.

I think a better way is to remove all of the mechanisms in place that made them that wealthy in the first place.

Professorozone ,

When my mother died ( not a billionaire) I sure as hell didn't think that was a valid reason for the government to collect a payment.

I stand by what I said. Tax the crap out of them when they are alive and remove all of the mechanisms that got them this insane wealth.

Professorozone ,

I thought "the turn" was that he was actually being investigated for it.

Professorozone ,

I think they phrased that incorrectly. Don't they mean Google wants their AI to listen in on your conversations and in return they'll keep you safe. LOL.

Professorozone ,

As a hobbiest, I make things out of steel and aluminum. Can't wait to pay more.

Trump’s McDonald’s bill is big, but its prices have ballooned ( www.theguardian.com )

Donald Trump’s appearance in criminal court on Monday has raised many questions, constitutional and otherwise, but on the evidence of the first day I find myself most curious about the former president’s McDonald’s order. During jury selection last week, the Daily Mail reported on a $700 (£560) McDonald’s order put in...

Professorozone ,

No, I'm with you on that one. I hadn't eaten there in a while and got a hankering. So I went to one, got a hamburger, fries and a milk shake. That was like 30 years ago and I've never been back. Even the milk shake was horrible. A MILKSHAKE! I don't understand what people see in that place. I'd be just fine if it went out of business.

Professorozone ,

I use Pandora a lot. Often I'll go to YouTube to watch the video.

So I put in a station on Pandora and when I hear a song I really like (or several I like from one artist) I put that artist in as a station on Pandora. Lather, rinse, repeat. I'll usually find a bunch of new stuff I haven't heard before and I'm pretty sure many of them are from little known artists because when I put their songs into YouTube, I notice they frequently have few views. Ex. Jem. Hope this isn't too obvious.

Professorozone ,

I really like the door.

Professorozone ,

I've always liked that painting and I think the choice of Uhura as her mirror mirror character was the cat's meow!

Do you consider The Fifth Element to be cyberpunk? ( lemmy.zip )

The futuristic city with flying cars at the beginning of the movie definitely has all the cyberpunk visuals, and technically Zorg is the head of an evil corporation. But the real villain of the movie is incoming force of evil/darkness. And the plot is resolved through the power of love. Even the President of Earth is actively...

Professorozone ,

My vote would be no. Just straight up sci-fi.

Professorozone ,

Mine's the same. For some strange reason, full of hot chicks. I also don't watch shorts. Maybe they know I'm male and figure that will draw me in.

Professorozone ,

I'm not dyslexic, but I did the same thing. So don't worry too much about it. Wait...or...AM I dyslexic? Oh no!

Professorozone ,

Yup, exactly what I think. So I used to sit in the gate area until the last possible moment until I found out that if you wait too long, they'll give away your seat. Plus since they are charging people for checking luggage through, you have to get that overhead bin before it's gone, unless your carry-on fits in front of you, which it doesn't if you're on a bulkhead. So, now I stand in line, frustrated by that and all the other crap we have to go through when traveling by plane these days. Looking at you TSA.

Professorozone ,

Yeah, I thought about that, but I once saw someone bring something too large on the plane
and the flight attendant told the person it would have to be checked(at cost). Maybe the guy pissed her off, I don't know.

Professorozone ,

Capital gains IS progressive. Short term capital gains are taxed as ordinary income. Long term capital gains are taxed according to income bracket and range from 0% to 20%. This year to qualify for the 0% tax bracket a single person would have to make less than approximately $47k. Hardly rich.

Professorozone ,

So curious here:

When I moved to the city I'm in now, I rented an apartment until I could figure out the best neighborhood in which to buy and to find the right house for me.

So it's ok for me to buy a house and live in it, but it's NOT ok to rent the apartment. It should have been provided to me, I guess. Is that right?

Professorozone ,

I think you're using your bad experience as a template. I have a friend who prefers renting because he doesn't have to deal with any repairs or damage. He just calls the property manager. I guess if they are unresponsive he just moves.

Home ownership just isn't for everyone. If you owned the place you live in you would have had to come up with a larger down payment, qualify for a mortgage, handle every repair yourself and when you wanted/needed to move, sell the house, making repairs before doing so. Plus you'd be at the mercy of your neighbors for your property value to stay up, so you don't lose money. Don't even get me started on HOAs. Home ownership simply isn't for everybody. If you're landlord was more responsive and the rent was more affordable it probably wouldn't be so bad. And that's a different problem than the existence of landlords. It's really more of a BAD landlord problem, I think.

Professorozone ,

So I have to find a place to rent that has an owner/operator? And hope it's in a safe location? And hope there's availability? And that I can afford it? And that it's close enough to work? And that they offer month-to-month so I can leave when I find the right place?

Seems simple enough.

Professorozone OP ,

Yeah, I was looking for the legal reason.

Professorozone OP ,

Thank you. That's pretty much what I was looking for.

Professorozone OP ,

Yeah but that was what I was asking. They both committed fraud. I realize the nature of the fraud was different but was wondering why one was criminal and the other not. They seem to have jumped on Fried pretty quickly and gave him a high penalty. It seems pretty obvious that Trump is a former president of but he's being prosecuted for other criminal charges so it seemed to me there must have been some crucial difference the two, other than their standing.

Professorozone OP ,

Basically, just fraud.

Professorozone OP ,

Your answer doesn't pass my smell test. Yes they can choose NOT to prosecute because, for instance, presidents are too important, but they DID prosecute and they have to say what law was broken and there are sentencing guidelines. If Trump and Fried were both convicted of murder, I'm pretty sure Trump would not just be fined while Fried was jailed. I don't pretend that Trump will ever face serious consequences but I kind of think there IS a legal reasoning behind the differences in the two cases.

Professorozone OP ,

Really? Isn't fraudulently paying less in taxes, stealing from the government? I thought Al Capone went to prison for tax avoidance.

Professorozone OP ,

If that is the case, why is Trump being tried at all?

Professorozone OP ,

Thank you.

Professorozone ,

I think I'm missing something. So the insurrectionists, yell "charge" as if in battle and say to pull all the Democrats out into the street and have a mob trial, but what they're being charged with is interfering with a government proceeding? Like that's the only thing wrong here?

Professorozone ,

Copy that. Thanks. I did read the whole thing but must have missed that line. Or maybe dozed.

Professorozone ,

In totality, Biden has forgiven billions in loans for over 3 million people.

Source: John Oliver's. I think it's called Last Week Tonight.

Professorozone ,

I'm pretty sure you're wrong. Trump says Mar-a-lago is worth billions so it's worth billions, right? I mean that's how it's worked for him up until now.

Professorozone ,

Picture this scenario. They say yes and Biden has him executed. Just for the record, I'm not in favor of this in any way, just pointing out a possible irony.

Professorozone ,

Actually my friends recipe.

Root beer float:
Ingredients: Root beer, vanilla ice cream and just a touch of Kalua.

Professorozone ,

Sounds delish.

Professorozone ,

I know right? What circular reasoning this is. The government is concerned about keeping our secrets safe, so they ask for the former president to return them and must force the issue when he doesn't, but to keep the secrets safe the judge wants them to divulge the secrets?

I do not see the relevance of the actual contents. It could have been a government encryption device or a cell phone or something.

As an alternative couldn't they redact the crucial parts? Ex. "Submarine x, with a periscope depth of xxx is to be deployed in a xxx configuration to secure the xxx area." Pretty easy to see the reason for the secrecy without giving the details. Although there are probably situations where this wouldn't work.

Professorozone ,

They are called loads or alternately terminations, but technically you would specify which termination, for instance a 50 ohm termination to distinguish it from a short or open.

Professorozone ,

That's one of the coolest guitars I've ever seen!

Professorozone ,

I'm an antenna engineer. I'd bring an antenna because after hearing a lot of adult show-and-tells I figure people could probably use some sleep.

Professorozone ,

Never used that myself. There are many programs we use depending on what property you are looking to calculate. I'd say the main tool is HFSS. I personally used CST mostly because when I was learning all of the licenses were usually in use and CST was always available since it was not as well known. But seriously, I'd estimate there are literally dozens of programs plus programs that each of us writes, usually in Matlab.

Professorozone ,

To be honest, we learn about the basic antenna designs, and there are many, and then usually new designs come from altering some idea to fit a new need, until there is nothing of the original idea left. LOL. Usually, we're asked to size reduce but it's just not physically possible to do what is often asked of us. There is a running joke in the industry that customers always want an infinitely small antenna with infinite gain. Usually we start with something like a monopole design and change the physical parameters until we can no longer meet the spec. Hopefully the antennas fitsb in the required space. At least that how did it. Necessity is the parent of invention, after all.
