Why does a state like California that has supermajorities in both houses of the legislature not have a livable wage, housing guarantees, universal healthcare, and other very progressive policies?

I keep being told it's because of the Republicans that we can't have nice things. So what gives in California? We should be overflowing with progressive policies.

Republicans and Democrats have been moving steadily to the right for the last 40 years. So now, Democrats are where the Republicans were in the 1980s: boring, middle of the road corporatists, friends of banks, insurance and pharmaceutical companies. And the right has moved all the way into an insane asylum. We haven't had a real progressive president since Jimmy Carter and that was 50 years ago.

Feudal serfdom aka Company Towns. Conservatives would LOVE for us to return to that. You get paid in company Disney bucks that can only be used at the company store. You'll live in company dorms, go to company schools and when you die, you'll be buried in the company graveyard.

Slavery never went away in this country. It just became more profitable.

Reddit: 'We Are in the Early Stages of Monetizing Our User Base' ( www.404media.co )

Reddit said in a filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission that its users’ posts are “a valuable source of conversation data and knowledge” that has been and will continue to be an important mechanism for training AI and large language models. The filing also states that the company believes “we are in the early...

"Early Stages?" You've got AI mining your data. The Lions have already come and gone. The hyenas and other scavengers are picking over the scraps, now.

Yeah, subby. We get it. "Both sides are bad." But one side is boring corporatists who don't give a crap and the other side is 100% concentrated evil fascists, authoritarians and religious nutjobs. And while that's a choice between the lesser of two evils, it's not a difficult one.

The very first lesson you will learn from your very first job is that companies have no loyalty to anything but the bottom line. The days of guaranteed lifetime employment at a company disappeared decades ago.

It is long past time we got over our child-like worship of billionaires.

NutWrench ,
@NutWrench@lemmy.ml avatar

This. Don't let billionaires gaslight you into thinking that capitalism is some kind of holy word. THEIR idea of "capitalism" is the 19th-century, robber-baron kind that benefits no one but themselves.

NutWrench ,
@NutWrench@lemmy.ml avatar

Lol. They left the placeholder in the offer.
They could probably use a programmer.

NutWrench ,
@NutWrench@lemmy.ml avatar

This is exactly the kind of economy I would expect out of billionaires who are trying to destroy the middle class and bring back Company Towns. This is what 19th century robber-baron capitalism looks like, not the kind you were taught by Elmer Fudd.

The scam involving the fake CFO was only discovered when the employee later checked with the corporation’s head office.

A surprise teleconference resulting in the transfer of $25 million dollars? You can bet your ass I'm going to verify that transaction by calling the CFO on his direct line before any money is sent.

Does anyone understand the point of advertising a game doing something that, after downloading, it does not do?

They're called "lies."

How about we ban companies like Blackstone from buying up all the auction homes, lightly flipping them and then putting them back on the market as overpriced rentals?

They're a big reason for our housing shortage.

If people don't have the right to decide what their labor is worth, then they are no better than slaves.

"Reduce the 'headcount' but profits must not decrease by one single penny."

Said no one who understands how businesses work, ever. If capitalism actually worked the way these people claimed it worked, we wouldn't have so many idiot billionaires.

Yeah, but think of all the money Amazon saved by not hiring customer service reps. Lol.

I heard the number 6 is a lucky number in Chinese culture and that explains why there are so many Chinese companies with 6 letter names, like "Dingbo" and "moofoo" It seems to me like they just used a random letter generator.

The purpose of modern journalism is to suck up to the billionaire class, and to keep the lower classes scared, poor and stupid, so they don't find out where the REAL source of their pain comes from.

NutWrench ,
@NutWrench@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah, advertising is not "free speech." It's a way for corporations to steal your life from you, 60 seconds at a time

Also, because cops can get away with killing you but McDonalds employees can't.
