Lauchs ,

You might read the article a bit more carefully.

Silver is distinguishing unscripted speeches and/or interviews from scripted speeches, of which yes, there are many.

The question isn't whether Biden can read from a script it's whether he can respond off the cuff.

Lauchs ,

I’m not convinced this is valid criticism as much as supposition.

It is a widely shared supposition, that's literally the point of the article.

To sinplify: Trump may win because an overwhelming majority of Americans think Biden is too old. Biden's team has been unable to convince the public that he isn't.

Any other greens feel under attack recently from democrats in the United States?

I'm voting green because if democracy is 'on the ballot' then I figure it's the choice I actually believe in and not just the slightly lesser of two evils. And so recently I feel targeted by democrats and its getting kind of weird and I was wondering if any other greens are experiencing the same thing in the US. I'm very open...

Lauchs ,

I think of it as follows:
Five of us in a car and we're sorting things out democratically. Two of us, including the driver, think the ride would be way more fun if the driver goy blackout drunk and wore a blindfold. Two of us want to go to Mcdonald's. You don't want to go to McDonalds and suggest a salad bar.

Well, the votes are tied and the driver and his buddy win by default and we all die in a car crash.

Yes, a salad was better than McDonalds OR a car crash but goddamn, reality is also a thing and doesn't care about what we want.

The time to push for significant change was the primaries and our fellow progressives didn't show up to vote. Voting a third party now just feels "if I don't get my way, I'm taking my ball and going home!"

‘Just Like We Drew It Up’: What’s behind Joe Biden’s Super Bowl post? [12 Feb 2024 | Sarah Shamim | Al Jazeera] ( www.aljazeera.com )

Yet, it was no meme page or troll account posting that image: It was posted on Biden’s own X page early on Monday. Coming against the backdrop of Israel’s brutal war on Gaza that has killed more than 28,000 people and that the US has backed, the image prompted particular criticism of Biden by some social media users....

Lauchs ,

That's a lot of posts to avoid answering pretty simple questions.

A) Would those people be alive if Biden's social media team hadn't sent that meme?

B) How much effort do you think Biden, or any of his cabinet who actually make decisions, spent on this? Several seconds approving it if that?

Lauchs ,

You could just write out the more accurate and shorter: "those questions demonstrate the silliness of this post and as such I refuse to answer them!"

Lauchs ,

Dafuq? He was the pollster who gave trump the best odds of winning in 2016, a position for which he took no end of mockery.

Lauchs ,

Lemmy shitting on Biden for Gaza = "YAY!"

Literally any other criticism = DOWNVOTE THE HEATHEN!

It's kinda weird folks.

Lauchs ,

"All the stuff that was in my home was in filing cabinets that were either locked or able to be locked.”

Ehhh, I think there's a difference between a locked filing cabinet indoors and a random bankers box in the garage.

Lauchs ,

So it's just lemmy basically wants Biden to win but doesn't know American politics well enough to know that stopping supporting Israel would likely tank Biden's chances in the election?

Lauchs ,

No, because it's super disingenuous to criticize Biden on it like Trump wouldn't be way worse.

Yeah, this is my basic problem with Lemmy on this. Biden's actions are largely the result of American political realities and trump would be way worse. Dangerously so.

Lauchs OP ,

I'm sure some lawyers would like to be away from the poor but at least one lawyer was hospitalized after being assaulted leaving the court.

Lauchs ,

Child tax credit, tried to forgive student debt, medicare can negotiate now, investing about 300 Billion in manufacturing jobs which don't require a 4 year degree but yes, he didn't come to your house directly and give you ice cream and that is his fault.

Lauchs ,

I also assume he'd be picking up the tab and free ice cream is a pretty good deal.

Lauchs ,

Yup. But until young/progressive voters start voting in party primaries we're stuck with this.

Lauchs ,

The under 30s got ooutvoted by the over 65s by a 2:1 margin in the 2020 primaries, it didn't have to be Biden.

Lauchs ,

Neat! I hadn't thought about that. I'll try moving my cat's less used scratching post to a better spot...!

Lauchs ,

If you buy a car and don't use it, you're in much the same situation. You have an expensive thing gaining you no value. At worst that money could be in your savings. I imagine a company could find more productive uses for that capital. (A decent chunk of capital mind you, Google paid about 10% of its annual profit for a pair of offices in 2018.)

Sure, you could sell the car but you're going to take a loss as office vacancy rates are at what I assume are historic highs (in Canada it's about 17%).

The more conspiratorial minded may also point out that most CEO level folks or board members are pretty likely to have a lot of their wealth tied into the market, a not insubstantial sum of which is tied to corporate real estate. A significant disruption there could cost those folks and their friends heavily. It's a little conspiracy minded for me but also not so much so that it feels ludicrous.

Lauchs ,

A few things happened pretty quickly.

During the pandemic, tech profits soared which led to massive hiring sprees. For all the press about layoffs at the big guys, I think most still have more workers than they did pre-pandemic.

Interests rates soared. Before the pandemic interest rates were ludicrously low, in other words it cost almost nothing to borrow money. This made it easier to spend on long term or unclear projects where the hope seemed to be "get enough users, then you can monetize." Once interest rates rose, those became incredibly expensive projects, so funding is now much more scarce. Companies are pulling back on bigger projects or, like reddit, trying to monetize them faster. Startups are also finding it harder, so fewer jobs.

And of course, AI. No one is quite sure how much that'll change the game but some folks think most programmers will be replaceable, or at least 1 programmer will be able to do the work of several. So, rather than hire and go through everything severance etc might entail, I think a lot of companies are taking a wait and see approach and thus not hiring.

Like everyone else says, depends what you want.

If you can afford it, Vancouver is amazing (though, I am a biased Vancouverite.) In a good season, there are local ski mountains about 30 or 40 minutes from downtown, Whistler is a couple hours away. There's awesome food all over the place, the underground scene is a blast and even some of the licensed etc venues can be pretty awesome. In the summer, everyone wants to be outside and if you're into sporty stuff, there's a boatload to do. The weather is generally pretty mild (though climate change is messing with that.)

The transit system can be amazing, depending on where you live. (In the suburbs, like most other cities, it's kind of trash.) But there are trains, rapid busses etc if you live near any hub. And of course, bike paths galore!

Lauchs ,

Nixon is inadvertently responsible for the creation of the right wing media circus which I would argue is fully responsible for W and trump.

Lauchs ,

Lemmy when polls show trump in trouble: Obviously!

Lemmy when polls show trump winning: You can't trust polls this far out!

Lauchs ,

So sorry to read this. These adorable monsters win our hearts just to break them.

For whatever it's worth, you're doing the right thing and because you're that kind of owner is probably why she wants to cuddle up with you when she's feeling rotten.

Lauchs ,

OP didn't wash their mouth out at any point before the hospital? Red flag and mouth right there.

What's a skill that's taken for granted where you live, but is often missing in people moving there from abroad?

I was thinking about that when I was dropping my 6 year old off at some hobbies earlier - it's pretty much expected to have learned how to ride a bicycle before starting school, and it massively expands the area you can go to by yourself. When she went to school by bicycle she can easily make a detour via a shop to spend some...

Lauchs ,

Pooping in the toilet.

When I went to university with a lot of international students, there would often be poop on the seats.

My understanding is Asian toilets are different and a good few students from there were standing on the seat and aiming at the bowl from height, with mixed success.

Lauchs OP ,

Allright, let's take 10% off there bud.

Lauchs ,

Generally, social justice is at best, a distraction from real issues, albeit with very good intentions.

(We talk about human dignity, representation in film etc but not say, the fact most of our stuff is made by children who occasionally burn to death making it. If I were one of the billionaires running things, I would be overjoyed that people were so distracted about what a comedian said versus how our entire economic model is structured.)

Lauchs ,

Oooh, didn't know about an animated one. I've always been curious but 110 episodes works out to some 70+ hours of tv which would take me forever to finish.
