Vantablack is supposed to be the blackest black, but that paint has got nothing on a black cat in a dark room.

“Books bend space and time. One reason the owners of those aforesaid little rambling, poky secondhand bookshops always seem slightly unearthly is that many of them really are, having strayed into this world after taking a wrong turning in their own bookshops... You stray into L-space at your peril.”

This is the bookstore cat.
Which bookstore? All of them.

The lawnmowers are done.
Soon this snow-white indoor cat will escape to do the one thing he loves: rolling in fresh-cut grass
Then he trots home to proudly show his humans the lovely greens & browns he has achieved

This is the fluffiest cat in my neighborhood. He walks cafe to cafe, being as fluffy & cute as he can be, begging for food from everyone sitting at outside tables. He has perfected the “starving kitty” act, which is extra impressive because he clearly is well fed & cared for, not a street cat at all! But if you try to pet this cat, he will – I repeat: WILL – claw your hand off! The fluffiness is a trap

Landowner David Hampton planted larch pines in a Douglas fir forest in Oregon in the shape of a giant, 300 feet smiley face 🙂

Every autumn, the larch pines turn orange, and the smiley face stands out.

Yellow Robins, found in Australia, are the first birds to start singing each morning. These early birds don’t get worms, though- they prefer spiders & other arthropods 🪶

Sheep, like many grazing animals, have rectangular pupils. This, combined with their eyes being on the sides of their heads, allow sheep to see about 300° around them. The pupils are parallel to the horizon & rotate to stay that way when sheep lower their heads to eat grass.

Nautilus have been around for hundreds of millions of years! They draw water into their shells & spit it out to move themselves through the ocean via jet propulsion. This is slower than swimming, but very efficient!

A ladybug landing on you is supposed to be good luck! Even if you aren’t superstitious, they are good to have around. A single ladybug eats thousands of insects over their lifetime- mostly aphids & other pests.

Kiwi birds have the shortest beaks of any bird. This is because a bird's beak is measured from the nostrils to the end of the beak, & the kiwi's nostrils are located down at the end!

This bird was painted using Raw Sienna & Raw Umber, with just the teensiest bit of Pyrrol Scarlet on the feet because I did not rinse my brush thoroughly enough between paintings 🪶

Manta Rays can grow enormous- up to a 7 foot “wingspan”! Like so many other ocean giants, they get that big by filter feeding on huge amounts of tiny shrimp & plankton.

This ray was painted using only black & Payne's gray.
