Trump’s tax law cut the corporate tax rate from 35% to 21%.

What did corporations do with the money saved?

They didn’t invest it or raise wages.

They spent a record $1 trillion on stock buybacks the year after the law went into effect.

Nothing trickled down to workers.

JosephSmith3130 ,

@rbreich thats why Republicans threaten violence to get the Rapist Fraudster’s recession going - more tax cuts!

Reasonable, right?

This is the type of so-called "administrative state" regulation that conservatives and big corporations have been railing against for years.

Know this: All that deregulation amounts to is bigger profits for the rich at the expense of everyone else.

JosephSmith3130 ,

@rbreich Gov DeSantis already had the Florida Leg draw up a law he signed to eliminate this kind of laws.

The number one thing we should still be discussing from the debate is that Trump refused to rule out another January 6 attack.

@rbreich what’s your take on migrants taking “black jobs”?

Trump has told oil execs he would:

-Immediately expand drilling

-Gift the industry $110 billion in tax breaks

-Reverse environmental protections in exchange for $1 billion in campaign contributions

This is a man who's literally willing to sell out the future of our species.

@rbreich Ken Buck was at that meeting and denied all of it on CBS meet the nation or whatever this morning.

A recent report found that Americans have become less likely to go out for a workday lunch, and more likely to eat a brought-from-home lunch at their desks.

Do you go out for a lunch break? And if not, why not?

JosephSmith3130 ,

@rbreich you can see from the replies why so many restaurants are closing. Restaurants are becoming a vacation/travel thing it seems.

Justice Roberts refused to testify in a hearing on Supreme Court ethics.

Thomas secretly accepted gifts from a GOP megadonor and his wife was involved in Jan 6.

Alito flew not one, but two insurrectionist flags.

The list goes on.

Is it any wonder Americans don't trust SCOTUS?

Trump asked Big Oil to give him $1 billion for his campaign last month.

He promised lower taxes and to gut environmental regulations in return.

Big Oil CEOs already appear to be taking him up on the offer, inviting Trump to a fundraiser in Houston yesterday.

Be warned.

I can't believe I even have to say this, but it is not normal that the Supreme Court is taking its sweet time to decide if the president can incite an insurrection to overturn an election and maintain power. This should have been decided already. The answer is no!

@rbreich they are still accepting bids! No reserve!

Office Hours: How are you talking with your pro-Trump or anti-Biden family members about the upcoming election? https://robertreich.substack.com/p/office-hours-how-are-you-talking?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon

JosephSmith3130 ,

@rbreich I let them do the talking or stick to non-political topics. In the former, I am always shocked - Qanon is much more established than I thought with white New Englanders. In the latter case, you can feel people struggling to hold back.

There were 4,349 book bans across the US during the fall 2023 semester.

That's more than the bans reported during the entire 2022 school year.

Nothing scares conservatives more than a multi-racial generation of young people who ask critical questions and speak truth to power.

Why are we allowing Israel to maintain its strategy of death and destruction in Gaza?

In supplying more military aid, we are relieving Israel of any strategic or moral responsibility to find an alternative to the horrific course it’s on.

We are complicit in the bloodbath.

There’s something odd about Trump’s inability to post an appeal bond in his NY civil fraud case. All those buildings and clubs could serve as collateral against a loan to pay the bond…unless they are already pledged as collateral on other loans. Is it all a house of cards?

JosephSmith3130 ,

@rbreich bond companies will not use real estate as collateral as its valuation is unclear. State law

With 13 Oscar nominations, all signs point to as the star of the 96th . But a historian – whose research has revolved around the survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombing – explains why they are disappointed by the award-winning film.

“Yet again, the dominant narrative of the bombs chugs along,” writes Naoko Wake of Michigan State University. And the victims aren’t shown.
