Seed Planting Advice?

Hi friends! I got some flower seeds as a gift recently, and while they say they should be planted in late May early June, I’m worried about them lacking sun in our weird unseasonal weather! It’s been completely overcast and 50s and raining constantly. I’m sharing the planting with some kids in the neighborhood, so I really...

IMALlama ,

With cherry tomatoes especially (since they're small and some will inevitably fall off the plant) you're bound to see tons of volunteers the next year. This can really happen with anything you leave in your garden, but tomatos seem to be the most prolific.

IMALlama ,

Agree, looks like a sunflower to me. For OP: do you or one of your neighbors have a bird feeder? We have black oil sunflowers coming up in all kinds of random spots because of our feeders.

IMALlama ,

TIL these are a thing. Nice work! Have a picture of the box it sits in without the insert in?

IMALlama ,

Thanks for the photo! I now realize that the top sits on the pieces that run perpendicular to them and it all comes out as one piece. For some reason I was thinking that they fit onto a lip or something on the box side.

Clearly, I've never seen this style cutting board before lol.

IMALlama ,

At first I thought that you were talking about growing vertically, but you probably meant something like a green house? Beyond extending the growing season, what else do they do to increase yeilds?

IMALlama ,

Thanks for the reply. I can see this being a great way to go for a dedicated farm, which this post is proporting to do, but I am not sure I would want a high tunnel in my yard. I am on the wild-yard side of things and have wildflowers planted along one edge of my property, a milkweed garden, etc. I like to be able to see things growing and am not sure how I would feel about the visual block. I guess you could make one with more long-term transparent sides, but that would cost more $$.

As it is, we often have too large of yeilds when our four 4x8 raised beds really get going. Our issue isn't yeilds, it's the narrow width of peek yeild along with a combination of what we grow (not shelf stable) and storage systems (the whole pick early, store so it won't ripen, and ripen on demand system).

Think of IRC as a spiritual parent to discord. The big advantage for discord comes from media - embedding images easily on the server, reaction, voice chat and screen sharing.

It does make one wonder what would have happened if IRC had implemented some of that functionality back in say the 90s/00s.

IMALlama ,

Man, that whole entry is epic. Somehow I was blissfully unaware of this duo until just now.

IMALlama ,
IMALlama ,

Both.

Here because communities need nurturing to thrive. Some have really started to do well, others will get there eventually if people engage (post, comment).

There because there are a lot of established communities, especially niche ones, across tons of platforms that are still worth engaging with.

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone- Thomas Moran, oil on canvas (1872) ( lemmy.world )

Thomas Moran's vision of the Western landscape was critical to the creation of Yellowstone National Park. In 1871 Dr. Ferdinand Hayden, director of the United States Geological Survey, invited Moran, at the request of American financier Jay Cooke, to join Hayden and his expedition team into the unknown Yellowstone region. Hayden...

IMALlama ,

I absolutely adore this style of painting. Vivid lighting, lots of fine details, epic landscapes. Any time I find something like this at an art museum I can't help but marvel.

IMALlama ,

Very nice! What type of wood did you go with? I'm really wondering if I should just go with wood if/when my janky (but cheap!) beds start to fall apart.

IMALlama OP ,

We have a raspberry bush that I was... silly enough to put in the ground. It's spreading like crazy (about two feet laterally from where it was last year). It's in a raised bed, so hopefully it doesn't go down through the 10" or so of dirt before popping up outside the bed

IMALlama OP ,

I appreciate the dump and will give it a through read through! This is year 2, but my second strawberry pot had a rough winter so I'm considering it year 2.

It will be very interesting if these are June bearers or ever beaters. I have no idea what they are TBH, but it looks like there are some new flowers that haven't turned into strawberries yet. This is both nice and not nice. Nice that we will have strawberries all season. Not nice because we're probably only going to be getting 1-4 strawberries per day because they're not in a very big pot so there aren't a ton of plants.

IMALlama OP ,

Advice on barriers? How far will they grow laterally without being able to get above the ground?

IMALlama OP ,

Ha, this might be the worst of both worlds. Aggressively spreading and smaller fruit. They are pretty tasty though. Time will tell if they're ever bearers.

IMALlama ,

I discovered that the reason some of my starts were yellow this year was due to poor drainage and over watering :( we have tons of happy house plans, but I had it in my head that small pot + lots of grow light must mean high water needs.

IMALlama ,

Agree on jade. Older ones look great IMO.

Don't ever expose it to young kids. They love whacking it because it makes chunks fall off :(

We made that mistake with our own kids (two human, one kitten).

Our jade is pretty big + old, and the damage happened years ago. At this point it's probably due for a good pruning to help it have a better shape. The plant itself has some air roots that form every once in a while, but it's happily flowering currently so it can't be all that mad.

IMALlama ,

For one plot plant something like corn one year, beans the next, and wheat/rye the third, carrots the fourth, then back to corn.

IMALlama ,

You might want to look into headlamps. They're right angle flashlights that strap to your head, so the light will always shine where your face is pointing. Attaching any kind of mass to my glasses doesn't sound very pleasant.

Since this is a flashlight community, take a look at this: https://intl-outdoor.com/emisar-dw4-right-angle-1-18650-work-light.html

You'll be able to find to tons of options at your local hardware store too. The thing to look out for is CRI. Basically, the higher the CRI the better you'll be able to see a wide gauntlet of colors.

IMALlama ,

I suspect this is like our tomatoes. The tomatos you buy in stores were cultivated to be pretty, to get harvested by a machine, and to ship without getting damaged. Meanwhile, heirloom tomatoes will split their skin on a humid day, but they pack a ton more flavor in. The same is true for the vast majority of our fruit and veg. Actually ripened on plant produce doesn't have a very long shelf life.

IMALlama ,

It's a fruit?! I thought you used the stalk, which looks somewhat like celery in shape. /a Midwesterner who has eaten rhubarb pies made/grown by a great aunt

IMALlama ,

Like much store bought produce, grocery store strawberries are picked not fully ripe to make them easier to transport. On pant ripened most anything will nearly always be better than store bought, but you better be ready to use it quickly.

IMALlama ,

That sounds like a wild strawberry. The berries won't get. Offer year over year.

IMALlama ,

haha. I swear, the quality of my writing on Lemmy is abysmal.

IMALlama ,

And if you don't grow tomatoes yourself you'll never know the difference.

What do you mean? Once you have home grown, or even farm stand, produce you realize that the vast majority of grocery store stuff is picked before it's really ripe.

IMALlama ,

I was generalizing about heirlooms not being very easy to grow to modern standards. I grow a decent verity of heirlooms and hybrids and the hybrids don't split nearly as often.

Week? Man. I have a large Jade and water the thing evey other month. Sometimes it goes even longer than that. It's happily starting it's spring bloom after coming out from under grow lights in my basement to sit in front of a north facing window. All our smaller succulents are on a monthly ish schedule, but that's not anything we rigorously watch/pay attention to. Weekly for a succulent seems too often, but if they're happy they're happy.

IMALlama ,

OP said in an earlier post that they've had the plant for years and that it started life as the top of a grocery store pineapple. I'm somewhat tempted to give it a go just for giggles.

IMALlama ,

As others have hit on already, sensor size is the thing holding you back. Bigger image circles require more glass to resolve. The most compact FF e-mount option I'm aware of is Zony 35mm f2.8

Here's a quick size rundown. The zFc is very classic looking, so I included it. Had a n APS-C and is wearing a FF lens though. Next up is your A7c with the previously mentioned lens, followed by a fairly compact micro four thirds body and then the Nikon J5.

https://pxlmag.com/db/camera-size-comparison/2cb6d89c_adc2b2b6-feb6b053_6154c3c3-7d9a7715_4b7de3da-5b91e20c_6a9c3a33-t60

If you want compact and don't mind wider lenses, micro four thirds bodies are probably your best option. The OM-5 is a modern gripless body.

IMALlama ,

That Coleman lantern. I have a green one from the 70s that runs on "Coleman fuel", which is probably kerosene or something close to it. The thing is hella bright once it gets dark out, but I still happily drag it around with me when I go camping.

IMALlama ,

If your sawdust is free of things like glue and finishes, put some in your compost pile if you have one! You too can grow fine mushrooms.

IMALlama ,

I like my lt1, but it does feel a bit niche. It doesn't look like something that would appeal to someone who isn't in-the-know and there aren't that many of us. Hopefully it won't be disconnected too.

Ugly link due to being mobile, but you should cross post to: https://lemmy.ca/c/woodworking

IMALlama ,

I dug through your post history to see if I could unearth clues regarding your process. No dice, but I recognize the vast majority of your posts and have commented on a few of them over the past 6 months or so. I didn't realize they all came from the same person, impressive!

I still have my original question (how did you go about forging this), but now I have another one: what do you do for a living? It's obvious that you enjoy working across a variety of media and your level of competence suggests that you've been doing this type of thing for a while. I am a... very low output hobbiest maker. It's nice to see what others are able to accomplish with more time input, but it's never been clear to me just how large (or not) that time input was.

IMALlama ,

Cheers, thanks. Very nice work!

IMALlama ,

I'm assuming when you say 3D design, you using either CAD or modeling software? If yes, you could consider selling STLs as well as the finished product. Giving away, or heavily discounting, STLs for an alpha/beta run, would eliminate your shipping and material cost for testing. You would still be able to sell physical parts, as well as produce parts that are nicer than your average hobbyist will produce (for example, print molds and cast the planter in a more traditional material).

As far as where to post, I would try !3DPrinting

This all assumes you're working in software that can generate STLs.

IMALlama ,

I hope I didn't sound like I was implying that you should give your designs away for free :)

I understand what you're saying - better to give the early design to a person who gardens as a primary interest than someone who 3D prints as a primary interest since the gardener will likely have insight into what works or doesn't work for the act of gardening. There are some of us in both camps, but the overlap probably isn't that big.

IMALlama ,

I would try to search around for a data sheet on that cell to verify its chemistry. For example, CR123 batteries are a lithium based chemistry (LiMnO2) but they're not normally rechargeable. That doesn't mean that some companies are putting out lithium ion batteries in that form factor labeled as the original cell type...

IMALlama ,

Yup:

The boy, identified only as Landen, was 5 when Emmanuel Aranda threw him nearly 40 feet to the ground. Aranda, who had been banned from the Bloomington, Minnesota, mall twice in previous years, told investigators that when went there “looking for someone to kill” after women rejected his advances.

The guy sounds like a real winner.

Have any size/weight/portability restrictions?

It looks like the Rigid R4560 is the current incarnation of the table saw I have.

It's hard to go wrong with craigslist if you live in a decently dense area. Worst case, you can always sell it for around what you paid for it.

If you're going to be cutting large pieces of wood, having a heavy saw will give you more stability. You're also going to need something to help with indeed and out feed if you're going to try to cut something like a 2x4.

As an alternative, or potentially a companion, consider a track saw and sawhorses or even a circular saw with something like this. I break down large pieces of wood this way now and then being them to my table saw.

IMALlama ,

A track saw is rigidly mounted to the track. As long as you clamp the track square, you should be good to go.

Google Allows Creditors to Brick Your Phone ( lemmy.world )

I installed NetGuard about a month ago and blocked all internet to apps, unless they're on a whitelist. No notifications from this particular system app (that can't be disabled) until recently when it started making internet connection requests to google servers. Does anyone know when this became a thing?...

IMALlama ,

A lot of these system apps, while updated via the play store, won't show up if you search the play store for them. They also won't have reviews. An easy example, on my phone at least, is something called "Android System Intelligence".
