So, is down, and everyone just (re-)discovered that their own alternate, artisanal search tool is just Bing under the hood.

Here is a page where someone ( Seirdy ) has collected a bunch of search services that use their own indices (not just Google, Bing or Yandex reskinned).

I'm already using a few, but several are new to me.

Auntie Flex,

What’s the most American headline you’ve read this week?

ErictheCerise ,
@ErictheCerise@kolektiva.social avatar

@flexghost

Tennessee just recently outlawed marrying your cousin.

There was opposition.

The opposition's argument actually kinda made sense.

"... what about gay cousins?" they asked.

... feckin' Americans.

It used to mean , before it got co-opted, and it should again.

For my part, I have never (?) used it in reference to .

I invite you to do the same.

I'll be tooting again in 5-7 years, about the correct meaning of .

I seem to recall a desktop software that would encapsulate element/matrix, slack, discord and a few other, usually messaging related, programs.

I can't think of its name. Do any of you know what I mean and could help me?

@claudius

Not sure if this is what you mean, but Matrix itself is spending a lot of time and effort on building (literal) bridges to many other chat platforms.

I'll take what I get, and I'll like it.

But I don't want to see him punished for trying to cover up a sexual affair.

I wanna see him punished for committing treason and trying to overthrow the US govt.

I've got others. It's a long list. (Don, baby, please keep defaming E Jean Carroll; it's becoming comical.)

But let's just focus on the treason.

I mean, of course it is; it's a criminal trial, with a satisfyingly wide array of crimial charges.

And like I said, I'll be happy with any criminal prosecution.

But Al Capone should have been convicted of more than just mail fraud ... and this guy should be convicted of more than what this trial is about.

Edit: To put it another way, this trial is a good start, but it better not be the only music he faces.

    Exactly! All this “let the people decide” talk is remarkably backwards. The people decided in November 2020: Trump lost, and attempted an auto-coup in response. That is the sole reason why the insurrection clause came into play at all: January 6 was the anti-democratic part. 1/

    ErictheCerise ,
    @ErictheCerise@kolektiva.social avatar

    @tzimmer_history

    I think it's simpler than this.

    Republicans might want Schwarzenegger for President; he might even be good ... but according to the Constitution, he's not eligible. End of story.

    If the Obama birther BS had actually been true, then Obama would not have been eligible.

    According to Section 3, 14th Amendment of the Constitution, Trump is not eligible.

    Rome used to be a democracy, then it wasn't, then it collapsed. Now it's just some city in Italy.

    No lessons to be learned from that...

    ErictheCerise ,
    @ErictheCerise@kolektiva.social avatar

    @RolloTreadway

    Details.

    If you get into the details, Rome was never really a democracy in the first place. Actually, neither was the US.

    I think the analogy holds up quite well, particularly since the Founding Fathers explicitly tried to model the US system on the Roman system and, sadly, probably succeeded even better than they intended.

    Also valid.

    The real problem is, my "consumer brain" instantly jumps to the solution of "give me the list of those 100 companies and I'll just quit buying stuff from Them" ...

    and that's simply not an option, cuz those companies literally built the flat I live in, the streets I walk on, the utility systems that carry my (I hope it's true) "green" electricity, ship every single product I do buy, including every calorie of food I don't actually grow myself, etc, etc, ad nauseam.

    We have built Humanity upon these 100 corporations.

    How do we, as individuals, undo that?

    I think we're witnessing / experiencing a "Kessler Syndrome" of the #Internet.

    #KesslerSyndrome is a cascade effect that can happen in Earth orbit, where there's so much junk and debris flying around, that it keeps hitting/destroying satellites and producing more debris, faster than the existing debris is cleaned up.

    It could make it impossible for humans to launch anything into space for generations, and it's a serious risk.

    It's not a perfect analogy, but AI-enhanced spam is turning the Internet into a garbage-filled wasteland, where the existing garbage keeps spawning more garbage faster than anyone can hope to clean it up.

    As we get closer to the next presidential election, it's important to remember that it can be dangerous to believe ANYTHING. Misinformation is everywhere. If you want to be confident that the news you are consuming is factual, you need to have unbiased skepticism and be dedicated to thoroughly checking your sources.

    The Problem with Trolley Car Problems

    I started out saying this as a joke, but gradually, over time, I've come to realize it's actually accurate.

    The true solution to almost all "trolley car" problems is to find who keeps tying people to the tracks.

    In trolley car problems, the people tied to the tracks always represent some disadvantaged sector of society — poor people, homeless people, no healthcare, minorites, etc — or even just (pardon the expression) "regular" lower class people.

    And the "problem" is always "do you let those people be run over in order to save a billionaire, or a corporation, or the banking industry, or some sector of the economy, etc.

    And again ... why are those people tied to the tracks in the first place? What is wrong with our economy/society/legal system, that we have those people stuck in those disadvantaged positions?

    So the next time you see a trolley car problem — even the comedy/shitpost/joke problems — ask yourself, "who are those people tied to the track, and how did they get there in the first place?

    Amazon spent $14.2 million on anti-union consultants last year alone. If that's not a clear sign that corporations are terrified of worker power, I don't know what is.

    ErictheCerise ,

    @rbreich

    In Amazon's world, that's a rounding error.

    Find out how much they spent lobbying politicians to oppose Union legislation. I bet that's a better number.
