Well said. Lawful engagement is the only way if anyone is going to hold that kind of power. American hegemony has proven itself thoroughly hypocritical, time and time again. It's attack dog in the middle east is holding the leash. Rule of law must reign - but never forget its our collective responsibility to write and uphold just laws for the collective.

There really is No True Scotsman. Well done.

Would you consider Wild Wild West to be a Weird West movie? ( lemmy.zip )

When I was thinking about starting this Lemmy community, I tried writing down every single Weird West work I'd seen, read, or played. In that list, I added Wild Wild West. But now that I think about it, I'm not sure if I'd call it a Weird Western....

Wait, you wouldn't call a giant robotic spider Sci-fi just because it's powered by steam? What about the concealed, man-sized robotic spider legs? Or the semi-sentient flying death saws? Or all the myriad old-timey James Bond-esque gadgets?

I haven't looked in detail at all the other movies you've included, but WWW is definitely a western and definitely weird AF. It's also possibly my (quite inexplicably and unironically) favourite movie.

Is AI actually going to accidentally end up doing some good in this world by starting The Revolution? 🙃

Yeah, and as someone lse mentioned: they often have a Libby service that gets you tonnes of free audiobooks and other digital materials.

Gandhi and India's independence from the British through nonviolent resistance comes to mind.

DoYouNot ,

I mean sure, if we include violent reactions to non-violence and place the goalposts just so, then yes, absolutely everything includes violence...

But as far as "any big moves or changes" you mention, Gandhi's movement for non-violent resistance is the posterchild for doing exactly that without violence. It exposes violent state power as ultimately impotent when faced with massive, collective and coordinated non-violent resistance.

And Gandhi was not "nice" just because he advocated for non-violence... He and his followers used coordinated, active efforts to cripple the mechanisms upholding British rule. The British hated him for it.

I'm not sure I understand the point you're trying to make.

It's classified as a dwarf planet, and is among (a debatable number of) other, similarly sized objects.

What if the problem with cars was not their method of propulsion? Epthinktank | European Parliament ( epthinktank.eu )

Instead of just electrifying vehicles, cities should be investing in alternative methods of transportation. This article is by the Scientific Foresight Unit of the European Parliamentary Research Service (EPRS), a EU's own think tank.

The worst is when they install bike infrastructure that will just randomly end and dump you onto a busy street, and then complain no one is using the fancy new bike lanes...

As someone who prays to see a 'may contain' statement alongside a 'contains' statement on the potentially risky food I'd like to eat: I vehemently disagree. "May contain" seems to always mean "contains some". Without it, I'd have no way to know if there's a real risk of cross contamination.

Not everyone has a dedicated GPU, I would guess. GPUs are good at doing tensor calculations, but they're not the only way.

I don't think that's true, unless someone wants to find a better source. But the bible passages listed on Wikipedia are pretty clearly about food.

I'm paywalled out of the article, but it seems like more electronics and less traditional social activities is just restating the problem. Too much 'what', not enough 'why'.

It feels to me that the social isolation epidemic started well before cell phones and personal electronic devices, and that it would have more to do with larger systemic problems - things like average hours worked, pay, source of personal identity, image of success, feeling that a good life is achievable, finding activities with good value for the cost, and feeling like other people enjoy being around you.

This world we're inhabiting feels less and less "human" and I don't think phones caused that...

Taking structred notes about my life in a way where they reference other notes and can be searched easily. I've built up a knowledgebase about the things in my life that works far better than my memory ever could. It's helped at work a ton too, as I'm better able to remember what I was doing yesterday and what progress I've made towards a particular goal.

Or knows it's an easy way to make $100, so then secures a loan to cage a bear, and plans to hire a team to eat the shit instead for $75, all while pocketing the surplus $25 and skimming from the bear's feed - finally defaulting on the original loan.

I legitimately have no idea what you're talking about, so I'm just going to assume it really is that effective.

Very comprehensive and digestible report. I like how The Guardian and others are adapting to online news with the multimedia format.

Are you not using regex in Python to do that?

DoYouNot ,

I guess I'm just not sure what your doing in Python that is equivalent in some way to regex without using the re library. Like, do you mean you're using looped ifs and raw strings to do something similar?

Is the article you linked implying that criticism of Israel is just anti-American propaganda? That the people criticizing Israel just don't know what they're talking about?

The article you linked is an article from early November 2023. This article from NPR, published on the same day as the NYT article you linked, talks about Israel invading North Gaza with a force too small to occupy the city. The authors wonder how such a small ground force could be used to hold and control the city.

As it turns out, the IDF had no plans of holding it. They planned to erase it.

DoYouNot ,

Literally in the Israeli Times article you linked:

We are both killing the terrorists who participated and killing the terrorists who will want to commit terror in the future,” Halevi told troops and commanders of the 5th Reserve Brigade

This is some Minority Report shit. Israel must have some psychics in their "Precrime" Police devision.

Like, are we all too desensitized to the insane shit being said that this is somehow normal and ok to just be published without comment in a newspaper?

The Brits have undoubtedly the best outlets from a safety perspective, despite their size. North American outlets are garbage by basically all measures. European plugs are weirdly round, but very functional.

My two (€/100)s

DoYouNot ,

I mean, the article doesn't address Israel at all. Antisemitism is deplorable, and instances of antisemitic behavior do indeed seem to be on the rise. But to equate Jews and the crimes of the Israeli state is, in fact, antisemitic. And I say this while fully condemning the genocidal actions of the IDF in Gaza. If we condemn all Jews for the crimes of a lawless militant group, we are committing the same crime of collective punishment that Israel is enacting in its full brutality.

DoYouNot ,

Yeah, you know what - fair point.

I mean, the 5+ ads that Google serves at the top before real results are not the result of SEO. It's a problem sure, but don't take the credit away from Google. They worked hard to make sure you see those ads.
