I am sooooo fucking sick and tired of people touting out that tired cliché to defend capitalists..

I think instead we should start saying "don't let the manipulation by their benefactors stand in the way of the reality of the systems they maintain".

I doubt anyone is expecting perfection at this point, I know I'm not (it being a literal impossibility and all), but them pretending to be "good" and you buying it, doesn't actually make it any good at all (as I said - it's just giving them the space to continue as they are for a fee that they will never pay, their trapped customers will).

Defending this bullshit as the good we should be happy to compromise for serves no one but the people running the oil companies (and the politicians they pay to ensure such legislation has no legs).

You are playing their game, and supporting their team, bathing in the placation of their greenwashing and letting them get away with it. That is what's in the way of good.

You're not imagining it.

I've seen it (and many other ableist slurs) used far too often, especially for a site that is generally supposed to be more left leaning (which tbf isn't saying much when it comes to combatting ableism because we seem to have very few true allies) but is also full of tech-bros, who love punching down at others based on perceived intelligence, and who also have quite a lot of crossover with 4chan type cesspits, so sadly it isn't unexpected.

I call it out it when I see it, and generally block and report, but what I find most frustrating is that mods throughout lemmy/fediverse (again, even on the most supposedly left leaning instances like lemmy.ml) just ignore the reports and don't remove the comments (I know people are busy, I don't expect instant action, I give it a week or two in general before I check the modlog).
I've had to block several large communities, most that I'm actually interested in (mostly tech and science related, again, places where people love feeling superior based on perceived intelligence), because I get the message - making people like me feel safe and included isn't a priority in those spaces, so I refuse to occupy them.

Whether the privileged group accept it or not, that is the result of using slurs - making already marginalised people feel unwelcome and excluded.

And when they tell me not to be so easily offended, I link this (or maybe this or this) with the full knowledge that they will probably never read it, but with the hope that someone else might, and that it might make them reconsider their use of certain words (though I don't hold my breath in anticipation of society at large giving a shit).

Those are some awesome resources, yoinking those for sure.

The more the merrier!

Ableism and fatmisia are some the last bastions of acceptable and casual bigotry

Yup, the other day I had to really quickly back out of some comments sections on articles related to fast food because the comments were so full of fat shaming it made me rage. People don't think twice about either.

Usually when you bring up the eugenics origin, at least for people around me, folks tend to take a step back.

In my experience they get even more defensive, because eugenics is something they recognise as bad, but not their casual ableism, or the existence of a relationship between the two.. But then these are randoms on the internet I'm talking about, not people actually close to me, they'd probably be much more reasonable if it ever came to it lol

You have inspired an infodump, some links specifically go in to the eugenics connection, others are a bit more broad (I also have a bunch about the relationship between capitalism, "productivity", and ableism, and some on the myth of independence, which I wasn't sure were closely related enough, but am more than happy to share as well!) if you want more articles to yoink:

I'm seriously not debating this with someone trying so hard to justify continuing to use intelligence based insults that they literally compare disabled people to Nazis (who are not, and never have been a marginalised and oppressed group like the disabled people they literally mass murdered. Fuck you) to try and make their logic work.

If you are actually willing and able to set your defensiveness and biases aside, feel free to read through the links I left in reply Vodulas, or continue to do your own research in to what disabled people have to say about the matter, not those who aren't directly impacted.

Either way, I am here to reassure a comrade, not philosophise with ableds about ableism, you either listen to disabled people and do your best to be an ally, or you don't, that's your choice.

It's always nice to meet a fellow link collector lol

I'll admit it might be a while since I've read some of these myself (or in the case of the book pdf - not fully yet) so they might not all be up to date, but the gist should still stand.

DessertStorms ,
@DessertStorms@kbin.social avatar

Can you not make that point without the ableism?

DessertStorms ,
@DessertStorms@kbin.social avatar

It’s not possible.

By design, of course.
For those who won't look it up the takeaway is that when a massively popular, actually left leaning candidate makes it far enough in the race and poses a real threat to the establishment despite the hurdles it has already put in their way in the form of the media and state dictated education that sow hatred of anything remotely socialist, the media will then go in to overdrive to stop them from getting in to power by any means possible.
And it works. Again - because of a combination of no education for critical thinking against the establishment, and a media that serves it.
It's one of the ways in which the system is rigged to always work in favour of the rich and powerful, and why elections are nothing but a charade (especially in a monarchy) - they will never let us have an equitable and just society that works for all of its members, they have too much to lose, and they would kill us all off in a blink if it protected their status (they already are). The time for fighting back in self defence is long overdue..

DessertStorms ,
@DessertStorms@kbin.social avatar

Letting the rich know people can get right up to them and mess with their shit is a good thig. Next time perhaps make it a cocktail party (just make sure no crew are around)..

DessertStorms ,
@DessertStorms@kbin.social avatar

The Media Still Doesn’t Grasp the Danger of Trump

Lmmfao, why the fuck would it? 🤦‍♀️
They literally exist to serve and uphold the existing power structures and/or anyone who will potentially make things even better for the rich who own it.

DessertStorms ,
@DessertStorms@kbin.social avatar

Those making the money off of our basic needs also own the politicians "working for the people" (via "lobbying", aka bribery), so they essentially make the rules for themselves, and they don't like "competition", simple.

DessertStorms ,
@DessertStorms@kbin.social avatar

I actually think it's those that get so close to the truth, before veering to the right and blaming minorities instead of those who are really to blame (by design of those who are really to blame, of course) - blaming Jews for controlling the banks and the media (it's the obscenely rich), blaming immigrants for poor work conditions/no jobs (it's the obscenely rich), blaming disabled people for being a burden and leeching off the tax payer (it's the obscenely rich), blaming whichever generation is currently in young adulthood for "destroying industries" (it's the obscenely rich), and so on and so on..

I guess they make me angriest because the truth clearly isn't outside of the people who believe the conspiracy's grasp, they'd just rather punch down, solve nothing, but continue to have minor feelings of superiority (which really ties in with the key to all belief in conspiracy theories - "I have special knowledge you don't"), than punch up and actually try to resolve the issues they whine about..

DessertStorms , (edited )
@DessertStorms@kbin.social avatar

Liberals play along plenty in to the division sown by the ruling class, but lets be fucking clear - conservatives choose to be that way, and are actively and vocally contributing to the problem, unlike Jews, immigrants, disabled people and so on..

Is working class conservative Joe Shmoe responsible for the system and the one who needs to be removed from society? No, they're as much a victim of it (and its brain washing propaganda) as any other working class person, and sure, many liberals fail to see this, but to compare calling out people who choose to actively support open and proud oppressors for their contribution, to scapegoating the people they oppress for existing as who they are, for the problems of society, is fucking gross.

E: seriously, conservatives uphold conservatism - there is no conspiracy. 🤦‍♀️

DessertStorms ,
@DessertStorms@kbin.social avatar

Not sure I agree that conservatives can both “choose” to be like they are, and also be the victims of their upbringing in a toxic system. These 2 points you made seem to be contradictory.

Not really.

We are all subjected to the same propaganda, yet we're not all conservatives, that's enough to prove that there is choice involved (even if the choices are limited, and opinions externally influenced by and for the ruling class), but more to the point - no one is born conservative, and no one is forced in any way to support one political party or another, political affiliation isn't something someone can't help or control or change, making it a choice, unlike race, gender, sexual orientation, abledness, place and circumstances of birth, and so on, which are not.

DessertStorms OP ,
@DessertStorms@kbin.social avatar

I gained nothing from watching the first episode, and won't be watching the rest..

But I'm also not really a fan of dating/"love" shows in general, so I'm not the target audience, but then I think this underage/age gap thing is too much even for the trashiest/most exploitative of shows, so.. 🤷‍♀️

DessertStorms ,
@DessertStorms@kbin.social avatar

And over 2 centuries of data tells us it will be one of the two.

As well as that the Overton window consistently moves to the right no matter which of the two it is (by design, of course, because as opposed to OP's suggestion that the system is somehow "broken", it is, in fact, working as intended), yet you continue to put all of your faith in to this charade, patting yourself on the back for voting for a fascism enabler like it's some act of anti-fascism..

How to rewild your teenagers: a parents’ guide to reconnecting them with nature ( www.theguardian.com )

From sniffing dandelions to prodding frogspawn and chasing butterflies, young children are often automatically and unashamedly drawn to nature. Then a chasm opens. During adolescence, many declare wildlife boring, “icky” or uncool, while the allure of social networks and fast fashion intensifies, alongside mounting pressures...

DessertStorms ,
@DessertStorms@kbin.social avatar

If you’ve waited until they’re teenagers to get them to love being in nature, you’ve done it wrong.

Or maybe they're just not as privileged as you obviously are to not only live where you can access nature easily, but also have the free time and other resources (not to mention physical ability) to do so regularly..

And maybe you could just be grateful for what you have, never mind try to have a better understanding of why not everyone can enjoy the "right" life like you do, instead of declaring people whose lives you clearly have little understanding of, "wrong".

Also, you're talking a lot in this thread about what is "legal", so just to remind you that the holocaust was legal, as was slavery, as were many other atrocities.

Basing your moral compass on what the ruling class has told you you are and aren't allowed to do is such an uncritical, counterproductive, and honestly pathetic way to see the world, but to apply your own, now faulty, "morals" on to others makes you complicit, and in direct service of said ruling class. Well done.

DessertStorms OP ,
@DessertStorms@kbin.social avatar

I was watching Rob and Rylan's Grand Tour, where they visited Florence, and met the woman who explored this painting, which Artemisia, one of the only known women artists of the renaissance (and first woman to be admitted to the Accademia di Arte del Disegno), did as a nude self portrait 4 years after she was brutally raped and then tortured as punishment for "being a slut".

The establishment then covering her up feels like just another patriarchal slap in the face.

Seeing the painting as close as we can get to how she intended it to be was unexpectedly emotional, and I thought it was well worth sharing.

DessertStorms OP ,
@DessertStorms@kbin.social avatar

The woman who introduced the reconstruction noted that the fabric they painted over her lower half was harder to "see" under, so it might still not be exactly as originally painted, but it's definitely closer than how it is now.

DessertStorms ,

Exactly..

Victimhood is like an accessory to them, put it on when they need a little pity party, or to socialise some financial losses, but quickly take it off again the rest of the time and be free to enjoy their vast privilege.
Which is how they think actual oppression works, which explains shit like the idea of a "race card" and pulling yourself up by your bootstraps - they've genuinely convinced themselves that since their problems are mostly superficial and easily resolved (or buy your way out of), so are everyone else's.

DessertStorms ,
@DessertStorms@kbin.social avatar

And this is like tip of the iceberg bare minimum type shit, it's not even suggesting workers own the means of production or anything that radical, all it is is paying employees a more appropriate share of the profits (the company is still making an obscene amount of that profit, and the employees are still under paid for their labour, it's how the pyramid scheme we call capitalism works, but this is proof that even while continuing to roll in billions, other employers don't have to be keeping their employees on poverty wages, they choose to).

DessertStorms ,
@DessertStorms@kbin.social avatar

Tankies are people who claim to be communists, but who exclusively support authoritarians and their oppressive regimes, past and present, because these authoritarians call themselves communists (think believing Nazis were socialists because it was in their party name), even though their actions have nothing at all to do with communism, and fascists co-opting leftist language to gain power being a well documented phenomenon.

It's pretty easy to tell really: if a project is/was stateless, classless, and moneyless - congratulations, it's almost certainly communism, and those who support it are communists (or possibly one of several varieties of anarchist, like myself).

However if one or any of those conditions aren't met, and/or there is a single dictator or a small group of cronies holding on to power claiming they've been met, but the reality is clearly different - congratulations, you basically have run of the mill fascism on your hands and those who support it are tankies (who, as I pointed out in OP, almost always speak up and in defence of a "dear leader" but never in defence of the people themselves, because all they care about is the regime, not the people living under it).

In the case of the fediverse, there are a couple of dedicated instances almost exclusively occupied by tankies, who have made it their goal to essentially troll and brigade anyone who doesn't agree with their, frankly bizarre, views (calling it "dialectics" to make themselves feel better). They're generally easy to avoid though, by blocking individuals, or their entire instance.

DessertStorms ,
@DessertStorms@kbin.social avatar

western tankies especially can be very weird

Right, and they call anyone who disagrees with them, even actual communists, "McCarthyists" 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Seriously though, anyone who sees any reason whatsoever for communists to support the Iranian government mustn't have a single fucking clue what communism is about.. They're a fucking joke (if only they didn't go around giving leftists such a bad name)..

That's a fantastic, and not at all surprising piece of information though, thanks for sharing!
