What do you think drives the price of rentals? Not being able to afford to buy keeps people stuck in rental living where they can be price gouged. If the price of houses drops due to an oversupply, more renters will buy, which reduces demand for rentals, which will drive down the price of rent making it more affordable to rent.

Couldbealeotard ,
@Couldbealeotard@lemmy.world avatar

Landlords hording property reduces the supply to people who want to buy. This shortage reduces the supply:demand ratio, which drives prices higher. Higher house prices informs the price of rent which is controlled by the people creating the shortage.

People aren't suggesting to abolish investment property, they are simply saying we should remove the abuse investment.

@Couldbealeotard@lemmy.world avatar

The entry cost of the housing market is a greater driver of rent than vacant rental properties. The laws even encourage property owners to leave a property empty than lower the rent.

I've had friends that were like brothers and have since grown apart from. Not because anyone did anything wrong. There's just more to life than having to keep hanging out with the same people all the time.

Comics traditionally come out every month. This is issue 12. Is this specific title what the anniversary is for?

How would that work for anything produced by a company? If you're a continuing run of stories, and a random artist dies, copyright on parts of your product suddenly evaporate? Getting a job as an artist would be like making an insurance claim: with a risk assessment. Good luck getting work as you get older or sick.

Everything can be funny, but that doesn't mean any joke is funny. You still have to approach difficult subject matters with a certain art.

It helps that Stargate could get away with stuff that that would have to be done by VFX now. They had underpaid extras suffering heatstroke when these days some of the budget would've been used for digital crowds.

The other effects were somewhat standard rotoscope energy blasts and compositing the water effects.

Running from Monster-Ock while the facility is exploding around you. That game was such a banger. And it's short length is made up for by it's replayability. Collecting all the comics and suits. Amazing.

Does it help your co workers?

If you got fired, no, probably not.

But if you quit then you can leave them a few clues as to why you're leaving and how they might avoid losing more staff. That can help the people you left behind.

Couldbealeotard ,
@Couldbealeotard@lemmy.world avatar

At I place I worked they had a few useful people leave in a short time span. All left amicably. They took feedback from the exit interviews on board, and now they are redoing a bunch of the procedures to try and improve the way the workplace functions.

Keeping more people from quitting is helping the company.

Couldbealeotard ,
@Couldbealeotard@lemmy.world avatar

Just because I might be leaving doesn't mean I want it keeping being a sucky workplace. Ideally I'd move on to something better for me, and people left behind might get an improvement as well.

It might be better not to buy a ticket at all. Finding out that you didn't board a plane gives them more information about your whereabouts than not being able to determine if you got on a plane with fake ID under a different name.

The AI has made it out into the world, and the submarine has something that can stop it. The ai probably was recovered from the sub by the same people who went for the keys.

Don't you guys (US) have an election coming up soon? This can definitely affect the outcome of that election. I kind of feel that 5 years is fairly light for unlawful disclosure of private information that affects the outcome of a major election.

I can definitely see the angle that he did it for a good reason, but I hope he understood the consequences when he decided to do it.

I feel that lore-wise, the doctor changing sex was a bigger test of suspension of disbelief. But they prepped for it by having the Master do it. The Master has previously spent time being a walking corpse, so that is a fairly straight line of baby steps to get there.

Once that's been established, changing race is nothing. And arguably the doctor has shown a not insignificant amount of racial diversity already to prove it's not impossible.

The show just sucks for a variety of other reasons.

Obscure screw added so appliance cannot be disassembled ( lemmy.world )

Basic blender went bad (motor ran but spindle wasn't rotating). I wanted to disassemble to see if it could be repaired. Three of the four screws were Phillips head. I had to cut the casing open in order to discover why I couldn't unscrew the fourth. It was a slotted spanner.

The security bit is doing it's job. If this is a barrier for someone, then they aren't the kind of person who should be playing with the internals of a dangerous electronic device.

Couldbealeotard ,
@Couldbealeotard@lemmy.world avatar

This is the same person that had to smash open the device like a caveman banging rocks together. Posting a rant online instead of just buying a security bit isn't a good second step either. OP may certainly be the exact type of person to keep out: bold enough to try to break open electronics, but stopped by a fairly standard security bit.

I had a friend who was really annoyed that there was a Scottish accent in Force Awakens. I said that none of the characters are speaking English in-universe, so any and all accents are just analogies for how each character is heard. Nope. He was still annoyed because there's no Scotland in the star wars galaxy.

There are plenty of films where the language is translated to English for the audience, and then a third language is spoken by characters to show that the characters using the primary language wouldn't understand them.

I think basic would sound different from english, and then when we see characters speak in a different language it's to show that they are multi lingual and can speak in a way that other characters wouldn't be able to understand.

Couldbealeotard ,
@Couldbealeotard@lemmy.world avatar

Again, plenty of films/TV just use substitution ciphers for alien languages that are definitely not english in canon. Stargate Atlantis has Ancient text that can be deciphered into english letters, but that's just an easter egg for the fans.

If the story is translating the spoken language for the benefit of the audience, there's no reason text can't have the same justification.

Couldbealeotard ,
@Couldbealeotard@lemmy.world avatar

In Stargate "Ancient" is an old latin style language (the Ancients are connected to early human civilisation) and is spoken like a variant of actual Latin when it is shown to be not understood by characters that are present. When the scene is strictly Ancients in the past the actors speak english for the benefit of the audience. I think it's worth pointing out that in Stargate, most modern aliens speak actual english for no justifiable reason.

wouldn’t the signs be in the Latin alphabet as well?

They were in the original release of Star Wars (1977). Lucas changed them to an alien alphabet, I assume to help show that basic isn't just english, but allowing nerds like us to translate them for fun. I actually think the concept of basic didn't exist when he made the first film and, like the many other changes to the series, was retroactively applied as the non-english universal language for that galaxy.

What animated film or tv show is this? ( i.imgur.com )

For me the first thing that comes to mind is Tales from Earthsea. I don't think it's excellent or anything and has plenty of problems but people act like it killed their dog. While it has its problems that have been covered extensively, I think it has a beautiful atmosphere and art....

I wish that didn't get axed so soon. They even had a comic run for it that only got 6 issues. It was finally a fresh take on Spiderman after the clone saga had everyone exhausted.

The entire first season of The Expanse should have just been one episode. It took me multiple tries to get into that show because the first season is so boring.

This trend of drip feeding mysteries started with Lost back in the 2000s and I find it incredibly frustrating.

Couldbealeotard ,
@Couldbealeotard@lemmy.world avatar

I barely knew what the story was until you learn about it in the last episode. The rest of the show then moves forward with the significant discovery of that episode.

Honestly I haven't read SM since they ended the first run of Superior. I think I remember they pulled 2099 into 616 canon, I preferred it to be independent.

I'm assuming this will get reverted back to the status quo within 2 years, which is normally what happens when a new direction is explored.

If anyone has any good recommended SM story arcs from the last decade I'll be happy to check them out.

Paprika. I haven't used anything else aside from having a folder of word documents.

Paprika allows you to copy/paste the URL of a recipe and it will download only the recipe. No more scrolling through a blog and a dozen ads looking for what you want. You can then create categories and tag recipes for any combination of categories.

It also has extra functions like meal planners, pantry inventory, and shopping list generators based on the meal plan and pantry, but I don't use those.

It syncs between devices. The only real downside is you must purchase per platform type. If you bought the windows licence and you want it on your phone you must separately purchase the Android licence.

Wasn't it supposed to be an anthology series, where each season was a new cast? But then they were like "hey everyone loves these characters! Quick make up some stuff so they all have to stick around." Then we got weird shit like that character who has a bunch of twins or something, and psycho serial killer Syler joins the team.

Do you consider Demolition Man to be cyberpunk? ( lemmy.zip )

Demolition Man takes place in a world with a large income gap, where the rich (or at least the middle class) live on the surface while the poor (or at least those wanting to be "free") live underground. And there's a lot of futuristic tech involved (like cyber sex!). But this is primarily a story about political correctness in...

Couldbealeotard ,
@Couldbealeotard@lemmy.world avatar

I would say yes.

When you see cyberpunk it's usually from the point of view of the lower class. You can still have a story that is cyberpunk but focused on the affluent.

The internet has never been a reliable source of information. The only thing that changes is how safe you feel about it. When the internet first began it was mysterious and scary, then at some point people felt safe, now we go back to scary.

People should not feel safe on the internet. It is inherently unsafe.

Couldbealeotard ,
@Couldbealeotard@lemmy.world avatar

How do you enforce labelling when there will never be a way to reliably test if something was ai generated?

Basic is not a word that fits the situation.

Couldbealeotard ,
@Couldbealeotard@lemmy.world avatar

I am not understanding you. Or perhaps you're not understanding me.

Firstly, the British royal family photo was not ai generated.

If you can't find a way to test if something is ai generated, who decides what is or isn't ai generated?

Knights and merchants

It's a bit like Warcraft without the supernatural stuff. You have to make a functional town that has farming, stock logistics, weapons manufacture, etc. and then you also have to win against a nearby kingdom.

The mechanics are so broken. You can usually just wait it out for your enemy to run out of resources (to be fair it was the same in Starcraft) but every other level was a battle in an open field, and it was very hard to manage the actions of your army.
