Remember: The real freeloaders in this country are the rich, not the poor. The richest 1% evade $163 billion in taxes every year. The United States literally has a yacht tax deduction. Hello?

@rbreich I wonder if it has a golf course deduction? ☺

I have been sometimes way too attracted by my own villains because in a way they seem to hold the secret to the heart of the narrative.

@Likewise @bookstodon Don't know about the book but I like the photographic composition. ☺

3 people in my bookclub really enjoy reading erotica. To each their own, it’s simply not my thing. My question, & I don’t want to come across as condescending, are there any books of this genre that are well-written? I get there will be a lot of gratuitous stuff, but is that all there is to these books? Years ago, another bookclub I was in read the 1st book in the Sleeping Beauty series by Anne Rice (she wrote these under a different name) & I couldn’t finish it, I thought it was ridiculous.

Any insight?

@Likewise @bookstodon When I was 14 and coming of age I read Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller. It was racy erotic stuff, I can remember how I felt. 🤪

The price of Huggies diapers went up 6% between April- June 2023.

Inflation, right? Wrong.

Kimberly-Clark, the maker of Huggies, reported that the cost to make its products fell by $75 million. They took the money and ran, banking $168 million in operating profits in Q3 2023.

Now, new research shows that corporate profits drove 53% of inflation during the 2nd and 3rd quarters of 2023. During the 40 years prior to the pandemic, profits drove just 11% of price growth.

My stories are never quite good enough.

  • Anne Tyler

Actually, her stories are rather amazing.

Last night I shared that Richard Russo is a favorite of mine, Anne Tyler is another. I’ve been reading her books for over twenty years. She writes similar stories to Russo in that she captures the nuance of daily life and relationships incredibly well.

@Likewise @bookstodon You really have a creative eye for composition. If you do that without thinking much about it, bring THAT to your writing. ☺

Cozy mysteries?

I’ve read & enjoyed Still Life by Louise Penny, does that count? I recently found this book, The Thursday Murder Club & it was called a ‘cozy mystery.’ Do you all have any recommendations, do you like this genre or am I’m just 100 years old?

@Likewise @bookstodon My wife reads those Cozy mystery books and has for years. I just asked her what some of the best titles she has read over the years and I think her brain froze. ☺

She said right now she's reading "The Unkept Woman" and it's pretty good. 🥳
