Ooh exciting news! I loved Olive Kitteridge, The Burgess Boys and My Name is Lucy Barton and this new one sounds like they’re all coming together, what a treat! New Elizabeth Strout out in September @bookstodon https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/b7bd5236-9356-4df8-aa6c-f3804f00defe

@sarahmatthews @bookstodon I love Strout and OK is one of favorite books. Excited for this one. Did you read Olive, Again ( a sequel of sorts to OK)?

@bookstodon Blackstone Publishing is really putting out some good work of late. I recently picked up Lilith, by Eric Rickstad, and was pleasantly surprised by the strength of the writing and the fearlessness of the highly topical plot.

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon Lilith has been on my tbr. I found out about it very close to the publishing date and got a denial from Netgalley. It’s on my hold list. Glad to hear you enjoyed it.

@bookstodon reader rant:

I'm seriously considering leaving NetGalley. I can keep up with publishing dates, but the archive dates are incredibly random, up to even a month before the book even actually publishes. The kindle format books generally give you some grace time, but the graphic novel publishers are particularly bad about doing this. I don't understand what advantage any publisher could possibly gain by playing "keep away" with their readers, like "Ha ha! You're locked out of reading the book we wanted you to review." Wut?

Likewise ,
@Likewise@beige.party avatar

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon That’s strange. What device are you reading your books on?

Likewise ,
@Likewise@beige.party avatar

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon Gotcha. I had no idea that would happen on the non-Kindle formats. That stinks 🫤

Hell, at twenty, he’d been ready to junk everything and start over too. But now, at sixty, he was less willing to throw things away that could be patched together and kept running for a few more months. He wanted to keep going forward, not stop and turn around and analyze the validity of decisions made and courses charted long ago.

Short Stories.

Love ‘em, hate ‘em, somewhere in the middle?

Years ago one of my dear friends (who is a huge bookworm) and I were talking. She told me she hated short stories. I can’t remember why or if she even told me a reason. This conversation has stuck with me, because I struggle with them- why? I have no idea. I have tried different tactics to overcome this. I am s l o w l y reading one now, but I don’t gravitate toward it (not the one pictured, but it’s one I really want to read if I can ever get there).

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

@bookstodon I just reviewed AFTER ANNIE, by Anna Quindlen. It's quite the heart-tugging story. The author does a great job with characters, setting, and narrative. This was my first time reading this author, and it will not be my last. Full review (shorter than usual, for me, anyway, because I didn't want to give away any plot points or twists, of which there are many.

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon Quindlen is a great writer. While I haven’t read this one, I’ve read a few others. Every Last One is a book of hers that left me a bit stunned. Very intense is my only word of caution.

Cover girls.

I love discovering different-covered book editions. I had no idea the flowered cover of Lisey’s Story by Stephen King existed until I happened upon it recently. In fact, I didn’t know what book it even was because the title is not on the front & this is not a dust cover. The edition I have owned for years is the one on the right with the shovel.

Book art is sometimes just a little bit magical.

One of the more known covers of Lisey’s Story by Stephen King that features a shovel on the cover. Also pictured is Lars (snake), who is wrapped around the handle of a shovel.

A smidge shy of 19, but she has some claws.

I struggle with short stories, & I don’t know why. I’m about halfway through this slim collection & I will say they are s t r a n g e , so I’d definitely recommend, b/c I like strange & creepy stories. I’ve yet to read her debut, Tender is the Flesh, but based on this one, I’d like to. #Mondog #photography #fediverse #amreading @bookstodon

We’ve talked about not finishing books, which I have no problem doing. There are some books, that I know I will give another shot at some point. This is one such book. I’m thinking I stopped b/c something else grabbed my attention or was more pressing (ie. library book, etc-which is actually a poor excuse b/c I always have library books in).

  1. Has anyone read this?
  2. Do you have a book you DNF, but came back to later on?

3 people in my bookclub really enjoy reading erotica. To each their own, it’s simply not my thing. My question, & I don’t want to come across as condescending, are there any books of this genre that are well-written? I get there will be a lot of gratuitous stuff, but is that all there is to these books? Years ago, another bookclub I was in read the 1st book in the Sleeping Beauty series by Anne Rice (she wrote these under a different name) & I couldn’t finish it, I thought it was ridiculous.

Any insight?

  • Anne Tyler

Actually, her stories are rather amazing.

Last night I shared that Richard Russo is a favorite of mine, Anne Tyler is another. I’ve been reading her books for over twenty years. She writes similar stories to Russo in that she captures the nuance of daily life and relationships incredibly well.

Such an interesting book. Translated from Korean, this slim novel is one that’s stuck with me. Not necessarily because of the underlying message, but rather because it’s strange. This author has 2 others, Human Acts & Greek Lessons, which I plan to read.

Guess what makes a good book?

Good writing & a story you’re interested in. A novel idea, I know, but in this day & age we are all but told who & what we should be reading. Don’t listen, read what & who you enjoy.

Below are a stack of books by Richard Russo, who I think is an incredible writer. You may totally disagree & that’s 100% alright with me.

@fyrfli @bookstodon So most of his are standalones, but Nobody’s Fool (which is also a great movie) is part of a trilogy, the third one just came out. Nobody’s Fool (1), Everybody’s Fool (2), Somebody’s Fool (3). Chances Are is really good, Empire Falls is also great. I have a friend who didn’t care for EF because she thought nothing really happened. I can sort of agree, but also I think that’s the whole point. I think a lot happens, but it’s a lot of just daily life stuff, not a huge plot driven novel. Chances Are is a bit more plot driven. Bridge of Sighs is a a good one as well, a love story of sorts.

Likewise OP ,
@Likewise@beige.party avatar

@fyrfli @bookstodon I agree . There’s something that I have always loved about stories that are simply about real people. Whereas some people crave stories about fantasy and stuff that’s different from daily life, I am the exact opposite. And that is what is so great about reading and books, there is something for everyone!

From time to time I will read a series, but when I do, it’s not back to back. The Lonesome Dove quartet is one such series. I’ve decided to read them in chronological order, rather than the order they were written. I’ve read Dead Man’s Walk & Comanche Moon. Up next: Lonesome Dove. I’m not sure when I will start, sometime this year I think, especially since I received this beautiful edition (that I have been eyeing for sometime).

Do you read book series, if so, what’s a favorite? @bookstodon
