Why is it on the floor of a laundry mat?

Anticorp ,

IC! I guess I am totally out of touch on this one. Cool, artistic picture though!

Anticorp ,

Antennas make a big difference for radio waves though, and designing them takes a fair amount of knowledge.

Anticorp ,

If they refuse to govern, then they need to be removed.

It may be time to sell my snowblower while it's still worth something.

One of the side-effects of global warming is more extreme winter storms. We're getting hammered right now in my city.

Scientists can't take action based on observational assumptions. They need to run the data, perform the studies, and get the proof, so that they know their assumptions are correct. Only then do they start forming plans to address our problems. They're aware these are "no shit" conclusions, but they still need to perform the evaluations. Every once in awhile our assumptions turn out to be completely incorrect. The cost of trying to solve a problem from an incorrect understanding of it can be very high.

Most golfers have none of those things except for the beer delivery. You're talking about the extremely rich, and professional golfers who have caddies with them. I've been golfing for around 10 years now, and I worked at a country club when I was younger, and I've never seen anyone actually use a caddy. For the beer delivery, why not? The course pays someone to drive around and ask if you want anything. It's no different than a waiter asking if you want a beer. You'll probably only see them once a game though, since their circuit takes longer than it takes to play a game.

Anticorp ,

Yeah, picking up other people's balls at the course is a major faux pas. If you find a ball in the rough then it's usually okay to take it if there's nobody on the hole you're playing. In your defense, they're not supposed to leave a hole half played, and if they were going to do that, they should have left their ball markers and taken their balls with them.

Anticorp ,

There are plenty of people who play golf sober because they enjoy the game. But there are also plenty of people who just enjoy the getaway, like you said.

Source: am one such sober person

Anticorp ,

It's not even hard. Most golf bags, and golf hand carts have built in ice cooler compartments.

Anticorp ,

I'm surprised to hear that anyone would abuse the beer angel. Everyone I've ever played with always treats them like they're the savior of humanity.

There's a different bar for finding a life partner than there is for making someone's day better.

"Q: Why is our product the superior product?"

"A: Because we're the best and you should buy 50 of our widgets today! Call 1-800-WE-DONT-GET-IT"

Nice! Free pay raise right before forming a union.

Anticorp ,

It's crazy that they weren't union already. Doesn't that make Tesla the only non-union car manufacturer in the USA?

Anticorp ,

They're there, under 500 years worth of dirt.

I agree with most of what you said. There are biological differences between men and women though, and we do tend to have different reactions to similar situations based on our hormonal balances. It's scientific, and not some antiquated ideology. We know the effects estrogen and testosterone have on mood, behavior, physique, and libido. We even know how particular balances of those hormones can impact someone's perceptions and reactions. When men undergo hormonal treatment for transitions they do become more emotional, and when women transition to male they become less emotional. Men and women with lower estrogen levels have a lower libido and men and women with higher estrogen levels demonstrate larger mood swings. Even something as simple as testosterone replacement for injured or older men can trigger emotional differences until the doctor gets the patient's estrogen balance correct.

There's something telling about their relationship in the titles of their books...

Anticorp ,

Titles aren't indicated by quotes, they're indicated by capitalization.

Anticorp ,

Emotional

adjective
(of persons) excessively affected by emotion

Being emotional doesn't mean that you have more emotions, it means that you are more affected by them.

High estrogen levels are associated with greater mood swings, and greater reactivity towards emotions. The infamous Roid Rage is actually caused by elevated estrogen levels as a result of the elevated testosterone levels from steroids. If steroid users don't use estrogen suppressors, then the body attempts to balance the hormonal levels and produces excess estrogen, which causes dramatic mood swings. Women are naturally susceptible to this because of their fluctuating hormonal levels during reproductive cycles.

You think the Olympics would be safe for an average 65 year old office worker?

Anticorp ,

How is that fair for anyone trying to beat a previous world record? Or have they already all been beaten with the new javelins?

Anticorp ,

He said they should have a normal guy competing next to the Olympians, so we can see just how skilled they really are.

Anticorp ,

Would professional janitors and gardeners be disqualified from being the sweeper in curling?

Putting an average person anywhere near gymnastics is just preparing to watch someone break their neck.

Anticorp ,

It definitely inspired whoever said this though.

School ( lemmy.zip )

EDIT: A lot of you are reading into the tweet while still somehow agreeing with the overall message. No one is saying we should eliminate music programs or that we should teach toddlers about healthcare plans. The tweet is making this thing called a --checks notes-- joke, that also conveys the message that schools could teach...

Anticorp ,

Schools teach mathematics, reading comprehension, and how to follow instructions. With those 3 skills people can do their taxes. We used to do it with a paper form and a paper book full of instructions. Now there are programs that do pretty much everything for you, all you need to do is answer questions. If you can't figure out how to do taxes then you have a bigger problem than the schools not directly teaching you how. As far as understanding all of the intricacies of US tax law, that is a much larger, more complex issue than they would or could reach in general education. There are entire university programs for that education.

Anticorp ,

We did, and no they weren't. But a lot of people don't pay attention in school, and don't remember what they're taught.

Anticorp ,

And none of those examples that you gave are taught in elementary school or highschool. They're taught as college careers because there's a breadth of knowledge required to specialize in those fields. We also have tax attorneys, and accountants who specialize in personal tax filing. They learned those skills in college.

Anticorp ,

I'm not defending our tax system, I'm saying that with a remedial education you can figure out how to file your taxes. I agree that our system is overly complex to benefit the wealthy. It would be great if they just told us what we owe and we confirm it. But given the system we have, you can figure out how to file your taxes. It's not that difficult for an average person, in an average situation.

Anticorp ,

Pretty confident, because there are instructions for everything, and there are free web based filing systems that will ask you those questions, and put the values in the correct spots. Free Tax Act is one such application. But what you described is far from an average person, filing an average claim. Many of those circumstances are unique.

Anticorp ,

Oop! Free Tax USA is the one I was thinking of too.

Just want to sneak in I admire your faith in people’s ability, whether I agree with it or not.

Hehe. Thanks (I think). I have been accused of over-estimating people's competence on more than one occasion, so I concede that it's entirely possible that I'm wrong about this subject.

Anticorp ,

I like the greentext explanation better.

Anticorp ,

It says that people set alarms to wake up and take some so that they don't go into withdrawals. That sounds like a nightmare, and probably shouldn't be available at a gas station.

Anticorp ,

There are zero starter homes near the city where I live. None. Any homes that would have traditionally been starter homes - 1 or 2 bedrooms, small size, 1 bathroom - are all in desirable, heavily gentrified areas, and cost almost a million dollars. Coincidentally, all of those homes were built in the 50's and 60's when homes were affordable. Anything new that they build is an enormous box with no land, marketed as a mansionette, or a luxury condo (aka small box with no windows and shared walls). You have to move at least 45 minutes outside of the city to get under a half million dollars.

Anticorp ,

Carpooling maybe.

Anticorp ,

Does the half wolf in Europe go to another pack, or is it eaten?

Anticorp ,

Oh, I missed the obvious answer. It swims to North America to find a place where they allow larger packs.

Anticorp ,

It was going that way, but the anti-racism movement changed the course.

Anticorp ,

The steps being randomly placed around the image isn't a great layout, but I appreciate that they used parts of the deer to process other parts of the deer.

Anticorp ,

Fucking finally! Yes please.

Anticorp ,

Frederick Douglass was a former slave, not a slave owning founding father. You should definitely read about him, since he was an intelligent badass who spoke many truths applicable to this day. My favorite quote from him is:

Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them, and these will continue till they are resisted with either words or blows, or with both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress.

Anticorp ,

That's not true. When race isn't a central focus, then racism stands out even more, and is appalling and shocking. When I was in the Army we were about as blended of a group as you can get. Most of us didn't think of each other as black, or white, or Mexican, or Asian. We thought of each other as our brothers in arms. When someone occasionally said something racist, every head would turn. You'd have a couple dozen guys of all ethnicities perk up and be like "WTF did you just say? No fucking cool, man". You don't need to make the central focus of every person's identity their race to overcome racism. Honestly, that approach seems quite counterproductive to me since it separates and isolates people by the color of their skin, rather than building a community bonded by their humanity.

Anticorp ,

Yes, he understood what a lot of people don't these days, which is that you work with what you have. He could have raged and cried about the unfairness of the situation, but instead he chose to use the venues available to him, and carved his place in history as a result, heavily impacting society of his time and ours.

Anticorp ,

I only watched it because I ran out of episodes of The Boys to watch and wanted more. So I watched both seasons of Invincible and still wanted more. I begrudgingly started Jupiter's Legacy and ended up really enjoying it, and recommending it to fans of the other two shows.

Anticorp ,

I did! It wasn't available for free streaming yet and I wasn't sailing, so I bought the whole first season. For some reason that one never really clicked with me. I ended up stopping after the first few episodes.

Anticorp ,

I suppose. It definitely should have a follow-up season, but I guess we'll never get that. At least it ends with a big reveal, and not them still leading up to it.
