I have about 5 or 6 aliases, full blown characters that live in my head, each with different names, addresses and backstories that I use. Even they lie about their personal circumstances sometimes. For example, on LinkedIn, John Longson works at Longson and Longson consulting, but he's the only employee, and he actually just works at a thrift store with a side hustle of selling second hand clothes on etsy under an alias.

What should I add to my '90s website?

So I'm currently toying around with NeoCities, and decided to trial it by building your classic mid '90s Geocities/Tripod/Angelfire pastiche website.

Some of the most important elements are already in place.

Tile background? Large font? Heading in bright pink with a shadow? Unusual colour choices? Random cat gifs? Under construction gif? Check! Check! Check!

In the true spirit of the '90s DIY web, some more pages (including the links page) are coming soon.

(I'm thinking of adding a page dedicated to either Britney or a nu-metal band.)

There are a few things that I want to add to make it complete, and I'm looking for suggestions.

The first, is to embed a midi file that plays automatically. Any suggestions on the best way of doing this?

Second, it's just not going to be complete without a guestbook.

Third, any webring suggestions?

Fourth, what's the best way of adding a java chat room in 2024?

Finally, anything else that really needs to be a part of a great '90s website?

So I've realized that in conversations I'll use traditional terms for men as general terms for all genders, both singularly and for groups. I always mean it well, but I've been thinking that it's not as inclusive to women/trans people....

If ypu can get hold of an old point of sale system, these might do the trick. Modern ones are usually solid-state all-in-one devices, often with no fans or moving parts, and an aluminium alloy chassis that doubles as heat sink. If you ever do such a thing, use a boating flare to ignite and tape it to your hand so you cant drop it.

Fire extinguishers can put out a gas fire fairly easily and it wont reignite, but a burning flare won't be easily extinguished so you should keep reigniting from the residual gas once the fire extinguishers run out.

Someone less lazy than me should use a script to feed existing comments into an LLM, which then reproduces a convincing sentence structure but incorrect gibberish content, and then edit all a user's comments - gradually, not all at once - to the poisoned content. Like 4chan did with the original captcha, but on a wider scale.
