A bizarre ghost-shaped creature, vaguely reminiscent of the ghosts in Pac-Man. It has a dome-shaped head and no arms. The lower half of it is ragged. Its color is a mixture of crimson and roughly painted, iridescent green. The green texture extends beyond its body, as though it is dripping or glowing. The upper half of its body is covered by four eyes with multicolored irises. The largest, top-most eye has two irises. It also has three horns, and a glowing halo that appears to be dripping with paint.

    ASSASSIN'S APPRENTICE (1995)

    Painted almost 3 decades ago, the cover for the first book of the Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb remains a personal favorite. 1/3

    Framed by an arched buttress and castle wall, a boy kneels next to a white bearded man who rests a hand upon his head. Saturated blue with the background, a castle keep rises with mountain peaks visible farther in the distance. The boy wraps his arms around a dog. The man wears white robes and holds a candlestick. The wax is melted nearly down to its base. A book lies fanned on the ground, and a ferret emerges from the tent of its pages. On the left, obscured from their view by the castle wall, a hand emerges with a finger raised (perhaps in caution or rebuke). The fabric on the exposed arm is a motley checkered pattern.

    A dim room: not light, but not quite dark. Like a space during the day where the lights are off. On the right side of the drawing is a doorway through which white light is streaming. A blurry figure stands in the doorway, indistinct in the blazing light. Directly in front of the doorway, inside the room, is a perfectly round hole in the floor, like a manhole with the cover left off. A ladder leads down into the darkness of the hole.

    A metal sphere, floating in deep space. The sphere is a dull greenish color, the color of tarnished metal. On its left side is a round door with a round portal window in the center of it. Hanging above the door is a small bell. On the right side of the sphere is a round, open window with a small plant in an orange flower pot. On the top of the sphere is a glowing red light, suggesting this is some sort of buoy. Also similar to a buoy is the orange cable, extending from the bottom of the sphere, seemingly anchoring it in place. In the background, the black sky is filled with stars.

    THE LONG WAY HOME (1978)

    Brandishing a shiny blaster pistol, a tawny furred alien with green eyes steps aggressively through a hatch with its cat-like tail curling behind. The interior—presumably of a ship—is lit bright yellow with readouts of varying color on the bulkhead wall. Outside, a blue and purple field of stars can be seen. Down on the deck plates in the immediate foreground, white smoke wafts off the body of a man in red spacesuit. His pistol rests across his chest, apparently not drawn in time.

    A deep pit, dug into the ground. We are seeing a cross-section of the earth: gray-black soil with a tall pit the size of a multi-story building extending down into it. Scattered throughout the soil are many rocks and pebbles, with a few bones. At the top of the pit are several mounds of soil. At the bottom of the pit, standing on a large mound of soil, is a small figure wearing an orange hat and an orange shirt. The figure continues to dig, seemingly trapped in this towering hole from which there is no escape. Also buried in the ground, a few feet away from the figure but not yet unearthed, is a large yellow smiley-face. Above the pit, at ground level, the sky is blue with a few white clouds.

    🎨 Sundress

    CRYSTAL SINGER (1981)

    Most of my sketches for this cover dealt with the interrelationship between the protagonist Killashandra and the black crystals she has a special affinity for. 1/4

    A raven haired woman in brown jumpsuit and knee-high boots holds out a crystal, black at its base but transparent at the faceted edges. It shows through magenta against a pale pink sky. Her knees are bent, her back arched, straining in an awkward pose. Her eyes are pressed closed overcome with ecstasy. A large moon frames her head and one shoulder. A high-tech gauntlet covers her right hand up to her wrist, projecting outward in a slender needle with a bubble forming at its tip. The rock upon which she stands is covered with green alien lichen. Cool jagged mountains fill the low background with crystalline peaks pointing in chaotic directions—up and at diagonals to frame a sun burning intense yellow surrounded by orange haze. A second smaller moon rises higher with a similar crescent glow.

    Something that looks like an extremely occult version of a playing card. On a gold background is placed a vertical gray rectangle with fraying edges and rounded corners. The rectangle has a faded red border inside it. The rectangle contains a scattered array of symbols, all drawn in red and gold, that are not arranged according to any order, but still seem to have a weird sort of precision to them. These symbols include: a large, inverted triangle with an eye in it and a star with rays above the eye; various permutations of stars inside circles; intricate icons of the sun and moon; a lightning bolt; and the letter "A" in the top left and lower right corners of the card, similar to an ace playing card. Oh, and also a sword, because swords are epic.
