Wow. A restaurant in Chicago O’Hare, one of the biggest airports in the world, banned an infectious disease doctor from entering because they were wearing a mask. This is unacceptable.
Chicago teachers demand climate solutions in their next contract
"[In April's] “transformative” contract proposal increased wages were just a starting point. The plan included items ranging from a plan to build more affordable housing citywide to providing additional resources for the thousands of migrant children shuttled to #Chicago from the Mexican border.
On top of that, the union wants #EnergyEfficiency and #climate resiliency written into their new contract."
A #Chicago activist Michael McLean demonstrating 30 years of spent fuel in a LaSalle County #nuclear power plant. That's it, these containers represent over quarter of century of low-carbon generation.
And it's incorrect to call it "waste" - the fuel in these containers still contains 90%+ usable uranium which is just unsuitable for generation as it has been "polluted" by fission byproducts. But it can be reprocessed back into new fuel - the only reason why it's not being done today is that it's cheaper to use newly mined uranium for that purpose. This may change in future and then these containers will be opened and reused.
On average, only 4% of each container is actual "nuclear waste" that needs to be stored somewhere long-term. But even that doesn't means "millenia", because the very point of radioactive decay is that this waste loses activity pretty quickly. The more active it is, the faster it decays - and the byproducts separated from spent fuel will drop down to 7% of their original activity in only 100 years.
WTF story of the day: #DePaul $University in #Chicago has dismissed Professor Anne d’Aquino for assigning her students to explore the impact of "genocide in Gaza" on human health.
The University administration cited "objections from some students" who felt that introducing politics into a science class was inappropriate and considered the material "outside the scope" of the course.
I just don't understand how green party members can be so strongly pro Israel.
Even in Sweden, where the greens used to be on the left spectrum on many issues, including Palestine and Israel occupation, the new policies of the Miljö Partiet have moved to the right, very close to those of Social Democrats and Center Partiet.
The right have always been strong supporters of Israel and the current minority coalition government who is heavily dependent on the extreme right (Swedish Democrats, the former Neo Nazi party who stopped shaving their heads and replace their boots and military clothing with suits and tie).
The only party in Sweden who is strongly firm on their support of palestinians is Vänster Partiet (the left party, reformed from the former non-soviet friendly communist party).

If something gets going on the ground, I'll let you know.
people will be en route to #Chicago even though it will be hard to protest the natsec convention where our so called "Democrats" will be putting on a show.
TWO INTERTWINED STORIES, one a spookily poetic tale of sisters haunted by the past and one a Chicago police procedural, converge in startling ways. Lovely, rich with a great city’s history, beauty, and tragedy. B PLUS
Toxic forever chemicals are dramatically on the rise in Lake Michigan and have been detected in all of the Great Lakes.
The new study found airborne concentrations of PFAS — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — are much higher near Chicago, Detroit and other urban areas. Previous research recorded similar patterns for other toxic chemicals. #ClimateChange#GreatLakes#Chicago#Detroit#Michigan
Max Bergmann, a former State Department official and now program director with the Center for Strategic International Studies, predicts Russian-fueled turbulence at the Democratic national convention in August. He foresees attempts of Russian operatives to infiltrate groups of protestors and attempt to turn protests violent.
He also notes that social media has “become way more of a cesspool than it was in 2016.”
@wdlindsy good cover to suppress the opinion of the people . Pretty obvious they will use our tax payer money to plant the violence against us during our protest of their genocide. All to further degrade us from within and create cover for their violence upon us. Staring early with their #Russia smear campaign. #ceaseifrenow#stopgenocide#usa#uspolitics#dnc#chicago
Today in Labor History May 30, 1937: “Memorial Day massacre:” Police attacked striking steelworkers, shooting many in the back, killing 10 and wounding 100, at the Republic Steel plant in South Chicago. 1937 – In what became known as the Memorial Day Massacre, police open fire on striking steelworkers at Republic Steel in South Chicago, killing 10 and wounding more than 160. The press called it the “Red Massacre,” as if to justify police violence and murder of working-class people.
#Trump May Owe $100 Million From #DoubleDip Tax Breaks, Audit Shows
A previously unknown focus of an #IRS audit is a dubious accounting maneuver that effectively meant taking the same write-offs twice on his #Chicago skyscraper.
The 92-story, glass-sheathed skyscraper along the #Chicago River is the tallest &, at least for now, the last major construction project by #Trump. Through a combination of cost overruns & the bad luck of opening in the teeth of the Great Recession, it was also a vast money #loser.
But when Trump sought to reap #tax benefits from his losses, the #IRS has argued, he went too far & in effect wrote off the same losses twice.
There is no indication the #IRS challenged the initial claim,…that lack of scrutiny surprised #tax experts…. But in 2010, #Trump & his tax advisers sought to extract further benefits from the #Chicago proj, executing a maneuver that would draw yrs of inquiry from the IRS. First, he shifted the company that owned the tower into a new partnership.…like moving coins from one pocket to another. Then he used the shift as justification to declare $168M in additional losses over the next decade.
…reporting by NYT & ProPublica about the #Chicago tower reveals a 2nd component of Trump’s quarrel w/the #IRS. This account was pieced together from a collection of public docs, including filings from the NYAG’s suit against #Trump in 2022, a passing reference to the audit in a congressional rpt that same yr & an obscure 2019 IRS memo that explored the legitimacy of the accounting maneuver. The memo did not identify Trump, but the docs, along w/tax records…indicated Trump was the focus.
Beyond the 2 episodes under audit, reporting by The NYTimes in recent years has found that, across his business career, #Trump has often used what experts described as highly aggressive — & at times, legally suspect — accounting maneuvers to avoid paying #taxes. To the 6 #tax experts consulted for this article, Trump’s #Chicago accounting maneuvers appeared to be questionable & unlikely to withstand scrutiny.
Today in Labor History May 11, 1894: The Pullman Railroad Strike began in Chicago, Illinois, when 4,000 workers walked off the job. It began as a wildcat strike and quickly escalated into the largest industrial strike to date in the U.S. Nearly 260,000 railroad workers participated. The strike and boycott halted nearly all rail traffic west of Detroit. The strike began during a severe depression. George Pullman lowered wages and began laying off workers, without reducing rent in his company town of Pullman, Illinois, where most of the workers lived. Eugene Debs rose to prominence as a labor leader during this strike. The American Federation of Labor refused solidarity because they thought Debs was stealing their members, as the American Railway Union was not an AFofL member. The government sent in federal troops to suppress the strike. 30 workers were killed in Chicago, alone. Over 40 more were killed in other parts of the country. Property damage exceeded $80 million. Debs would go on to run for president four times, as a socialist, running some of his campaigns from prison. He was also a founding member of the radical IWW, along with Lucy Parsons, Mother Jones, Big Bill Haywood, and Easter Rising martyr, James Connolly.
Donald Trump has violated the gag order placed on him during his NY trial ten times so far. If he keeps violating it, what should Judge Juan Merchan do?

Today in Labor History May 4, 1886: A day after police killed four striking workers and injured hundreds, protesters gathered at Haymarket Square in Chicago. As the peaceful event drew to a close, someone threw a bomb into the police line. Police responded by shooting into the crowd, killing one and wounding many. Eight anarchists were later framed even though most were not even present at the Haymarket rally and there was no evidence that linked any of them to the bombing. Four were hanged, one committed suicide and three were eventually pardoned by Illinois Gov. John Peter Altgeld. The Haymarket affair gave the pretext for a national witch hunt against anarchists and labor radicals and ended the quick rise of the Knights of Labor, a predecessor to the IWW. The Knights of Labor had been growing rapidly, attracting radicals and anarchist members. They professed solidarity with all workers, regardless of race or ethnicity.
