Brown Thrasher at home. This is the first year I've seen these birds at feeders. Usually they are on the ground, thrashing violently in their search for insects.

Nikon z6ii, f/5.6, 1/800s, ISO 1600, 500mm, tripod and gimbal.

Same bird, same feeder, but different head position, looking almost straight at us.

Happy Friday! White-throated sparrow at home. This one seemed to have a really vivid contrast between the black and white head stripes, or maybe it is the yellow on the head that caught my attention. Whatever the reason, I took many photos of this bird and here's one of them : )

Nikon z6ii, f/5.6, 1/640s, ISO 1000, 500mm, tripod & gimbal.

A weird little guy scratching their face with a foot -- male E. Bluebird.

Nikon z6ii, f/5.6, 1/800s, ISO 400, 500mm, handheld but braced on a deck railing.

Happy WrensDay to all who celebrate!

This little floofball looks like they can't be bothered to perch, yet sing their little lungs out on the deck railing at home. (Carolina Wren)

Nikon z6ii, f/5.6, 1/800s, ISO 320, 500mm, handheld but braced against a building.

Same bird, during a pause in its song. Its head is in profile with an expression, like, "what? I didn't say anything." this little critter is loud. We have been awakened by it.

Common Grackles at home, in some of their characteristic poses. Whatever these birds are plotting, it seems very complex and mysterious.

Nikon z6ii, f/5.6, 1/500s, ISO 1000, 500mm, tripod & gimbal.

Blue jay portrait, one of the blue jay gang that visits our backyard daily, competing with the squirrels & each other for the peanuts I put out.

Cat birds! More first time IRL specimens for me this week. The super dark one is super unique, and was the first to show up. They seem to enjoy the cuties I put out for the Oriels. They only hung out for a day or so.

A more typical grey catbird perched on a shallow cup containing oranges. Its under tail orange can be seen.

Today is the most ridiculous day for ! First a rose-breasted grosbeak at our feeder (first time we’ve seen one IRL), then a full-color goldfinch, and just now a Baltimore oriole showed up at the hummingbird feeder. First time getting photos of a BO. YAYYY 🤩

Also, Mr and Mrs Bluey (our eastern bluebird couple) have been hanging out, too.

@loren I love ‘em! One (unless they were taking turns) was raiding the feeder for hulled sunflower seeds and takin’ em to a lilac bush to scarf or stash. Keeping in touch loudly the whole time of course!

Some of the gorgeous Eastern Bluebirds, these in the backyard during a light rain. First set: focus on the female. Next post: focus on the male. 1/2

Nikon z6ii, f/8, 1/640s, ISO 3200, 700mm, braced on a fence post.

Same birds, similar positions, but the female has shifted around a bit. The male is out of focus and blurry, just a bit of blue.

One of the Carolina Wrens around home ... I peeked out the front door to get a photo of this one. There was a nest of the critters in this tree last year, let's hope there is a repeat.

Nikon D600, f/5.6, 1/800s, ISO 500, 300mm, handheld, BIG crop.
