From last night. Humboldt County, CA, about 40°8' north latitude, so much further south than the NOAA map suggested. Glad I went out! That's local landmark Bear Butte just right of center.

Shot with a Canon 8-15mm f4 at 15mm, ISO 8000, 8 seconds, RAW, then cropped in Lightroom. Adjusting the highlight slider (way down) brought out more of the color, but I didn't otherwise enhance the colors as the camera saw them.

The "rays" and some pinks and greens were very visible to the naked eye, so it was super fun to watch. The camera picked up much more color. This and any others I post were shot as timelapses, but they'll take more work to edit.

About 0.1% of the photos from the big camera, taken from Dunalley. I have not turned up the saturation on any of these, in some I've turned it down...

There are moments when you have to say, Mother nature is awesome. One such moment occurred at Lake Aviemore last night at 02:25:45. This is three five second exposures combined to make a panorama. WOW!

So this is the place in Doyle, Calif, that I first stopped to photograph the aurora. I could easily see the vertical column structures while driving down the highway! I didn't stay long because some residents turned on a bunch of lights & came out with barking dogs &c. I moved to a spot further away. Wish I could have stayed because the railroad people were assembling the train & I may have captured some interesting lights of moving trains.

My contribution to the from last night! I hadn't planned on venturing too far but as night drew closer and I saw all the amazing photos I packed up the gear and headed into the mountains!

I’m seeing this graphic making the rounds without attribution - many versions have the info at the bottom cut off. The creator is alienyrox2 on reddit (https://www.reddit.com/user/alienyrox2/).

I was kinda expecting half the world to disintegrate into piles of ash, develop a taste for human flesh, or become pigmentless robe wearers only emerging at night....

    Oh well, great photos though!

Thinking about a string of thoughts as a string of beads today.

I didn't get around to posting yesterday's drawing here, but it's on my Patreon and Ko-fi:

Playing with aurora pink for today's drawing. I didn't get to see it in last night's sky, here in San Francisco, sadly. I could have sworn there was a slightly pink tint to the sky, but it was probably just wishful thinking.
