Infographic showing how atmospheric gases and height influence aurora colors. Above 150 miles or 241.4 km, reds are prevalent with intense solar activity and a low concentration of oxygen. Up to 150 miles or 241.4 km, greens are emitted because of higher oxygen levels. And in the 60 mile or 96.6 km range, purples and blues are associated with intense solar activity interacting with nitrogen.
