/ Hamas' complete defeat - and then Gaza's rehabilitation

is publishing a disturbing proposal written by some Israeli academics and “policymakers,” who are promoting the establishment of a system of governance in Gaza that eerily resembles US's failed state-building experiment in , or more closely, the apartheid-era Bantustans of South Africa. The working paper was allegedly already read by government officials.

The paper is titled "From a murderous regime to a moderate society". It was written by four Israeli academics, and reviewed by members of the Military Intelligence Directorate and the War Cabinet. Its authors state that there is a need for Hamas' "complete defeat" - which, in their opinion, includes losing control over territory and "public trials" for its leaders. It also outlines a path for rehabilitation and de-radicalization. "Rehabilitation under fire is doomed to fail," the authors wrote.

The document, written in February, deals with the question of how Gazan society can become “a peaceful neighbor to the State of Israel.” The authors assume that victory - at least in the sense of preventing Hamas' resurgence and harming Israel - requires "rehabilitating and transforming a nation led by “a murderous ideology,” and cultivating stable institutions and an Arab culture that does not educate for jihad and accepts the existence of the of Israel as the Jewish people's nation-state."

The authors’ conclusions are provocative. First, there is a need for Hamas' "complete defeat," which means losing territory (for an unlimited period of time) and "public trials" for Hamas leaders. One of the authors, Dr. Palmor, says: "My position is that the average Palestinian needs to feel defeated. He needs to feel that the path they've taken so far, including education, hasn't worked. In my opinion, we should have declared the entire northern Gaza Strip as Israeli territory, for all intents and purposes." This is his opinion, not the document's recommendation.

All the writers agree that Hamas' defeat is necessary and that “rehabilitation under fire is doomed to fail." To succeed, they propose setting a "positive horizon for the defeated nation, conditioned on achieving concrete and measurable goals," and suggest establishing an "autonomous Palestinian entity."

The authors proposed (already in February) the immediate establishment of an effective mechanism to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. They wrote that "it is necessary to achieve control as soon as possible over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza in order to prevent further deterioration and to deprive Hamas of one of its most important recruitment bases."

But this is clearly not a “peace plan”: "The state independence of this entity must be conditional on strict conditions, including education for peace, renunciation of violence and terror, and effective security and administrative capabilities," they write. "Even if Israel is not interested in ruling Gaza and prefers to establish a different civilian government in the Strip, the option of Israeli military rule must hover in the background."

[Hebrew] https://www.ynet.co.il/news/article/hklxvywi0

A glaring omission in the proposal is, understandably, the occupation itself. Regardless of how Israel chooses to frame the events of October 7th, it's impossible to detach them from the broader context of Palestinian resistance and the right to self-determination, which is enshrined in international law. Israel can continue down the path of entrenching its occupation, but it's unlikely to find much support from its allies. In fact, by doing so, Israel risks becoming increasingly isolated and likened to the apartheid regime of South Africa, a comparison that already has severe diplomatic and economic consequences.

The full article will be published of Friday in "Yediot Ahronot" and ynet.

: Court orders company organizing arms fair to ban participation of Israelis

is reporting that a district court in France ordered the company organizing the arms fair, which opens on Monday, to not only ban the participation of Israeli companies - but also Israeli citizens.

On May 31, the French Defense Ministry instructed Israeli security companies not to participate in the fair amid suspicions of war crimes and genocide committed in the Gaza Strip. As a result, the Israeli pavilion, which was supposed to include 74 exhibitors from Israel, was canceled. However, the organizers informed companies that Israeli citizens would be allowed to visit the fair.

[1/2] / Looks a lot like insurrection against the military leadership to me...

An Israeli reserve soldier (in the video) is rejecting the authority of Defense Minister and Chief of Staff Gallant, stating they will only take orders from Prime Minister Netanyahu, as he calls on 100,000 reserve soldiers to disobey orders and remain deployed until "victory."

Likewise, he accuses Gallant of not being able to "win the war" and says they want to show what a real "military coup" and "how real Jews win".

is reporting that in similar ideological events that took place in the first months of the war, the IDF preferred to avoid investigations, including recently, and settled for internal handling within the units themselves, for fear of criticism and pressure from the right and protest within the army. In most cases, these involved reserve soldiers who sprayed similar political messages in graffiti throughout the occupied Gaza Strip.

/ Norway, along with Ireland and Spain, to recognize Palestinian state (to be followed by Slovenia and Malta); Israel recalls ambassadors to Ireland, Norway

With over 140 UN member states now recognizing Palestine, the wave of European support signals growing impatience with the stalled peace process and a willingness to challenge U.S.-backed insistence on direct negotiations favoring Israel's position.

[...] "In the middle of a war, with tens of thousands of dead and injured, we must keep alive the only thing that can provide a safe home for both Israelis and Palestinians: two states that can live in peace with each other," --- Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere ()

Israel swiftly condemned the move, recalling its ambassadors from Norway and Ireland, and warning of "dire consequences" if Spain follows through. The Israeli Foreign Minister accused the countries of "undercutting Israel's sovereignty and endangering its security."

[cont'd] Lessons not learned by the Israeli media

The extent to which Israeli media outlets, such as and practically all others, are whitewashing and indoctrinating their readers about Israel's actions in should not be underestimated. In this "explainer" of the prosecutor's announcement detailing the charges, Ynet's editor chose to embed photos of humanitarian aid entering Gaza (in contradiction of the charges, I guess), while avoiding more recent evidence of deliberate obstruction of these deliveries with the full knowledge of the IDF and Israeli Police, or the reason for an urgent action needed in Gaza in the first place.

/ 6 rabbis and and an Israeli-American writer arrive at Erez crossing … allegedly

Ayelet Waldman, a Berkeley author, was arrested and then released after protesting the war with a group of American rabbis at the Erez Crossing, the border between Israel and Gaza. Waldman's husband announced her arrest on social media. The group, called Rabbis for Ceasefire, was attempting to bring food aid to Gaza when they were arrested. After about an hour Waldman and the other protesters had been released.

On though it’s not so straight forward:

The police arrested Israeli-American writer Ayelet Waldman this afternoon, along with six other activists from the "Rabbis for a Ceasefire" organization, while they were allegedly attempting to bring sacks of rice into the Gaza Strip. The organization stated that their goal was to transfer food to the residents of Gaza and "to show the world, the residents of Gaza, and Jews in Israel and around the world what Judaism teaches: justice, kindness, peace, compassion and liberation."

Couldn’t ignore the choice of adverb here, which inserts doubts about the motives of the peace activists. These days in Israel, any individual showing compassion towards Palestinians in Gaza may face suspicion … or accusations of anti-Semitism.

#US / Sanctioned on an Israeli military unit “Netzah Yehuda”

#Blinken and #Biden respond to criticism about ignoring human rights violations by Israel by picking low-hanging fruit, while sending more aid to Israel and ignoring the continued massacre in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

#Axios is reporting that the U.S. is expected to impose sanctions on #IDF "Netzah Yehuda" battalion for human rights violations in the occupied West Bank. This would be the first time the U.S. has sanctioned an Israeli military unit.

The battalion was formed as a special unit for ultra-Orthodox soldiers, but over time became a destination for radical right-wing settlers who were not accepted into other IDF combat units.

One incident that led to the sanctions was the death of 80-year-old Palestinian American Omar Assad, who was arrested, handcuffed, and left in the cold by Netzah Yehuda soldiers, and was later found dead.

The lenient treatment of the Netzah Yehuda battalion's war crimes and human rights violations by the government and military justice system has severely damaged the reputation of the entire . Attorney Nick Kaufman, who has served as both a prosecutor and defense lawyer at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, and currently represents a number of individuals and companies subject to sanctions from the U.S. Department of the Treasury, tells the possible consequences:

The imposition of sanctions on the Netzah Yehuda battalion is an unprecedented move against an allied military unit, seen as a "shameful stain" and "low point" for the IDF.

The battalion is being associated with questionable groups like the Wagner Group in Russia and drug cartels in South America, which damages its "reputation" [I doubt it Kaufman is using it cynicaly....]

There are potential links between the U.S. sanctions and investigations by the International Criminal Court in The Hague, as some ICC suspects have previously been sanctioned by the U.S.

The military prosecution and the IDF have been criticized for not doing enough to curb the violence attributed to this battalion, which could amount to war crimes.

The U.S. designated the Netzah Yehuda battalion in 2022 after the death of an 80-year-old Palestinian-American, citing a pattern of abuses by the unit.

Reports of potential arrest warrants against the Prime Minister and others by the ICC are likely just "spin" and misunderstand the ICC's processes.

/ What starvation?

While Israeli news outlet might not be officially state-owned, it functions in a manner akin to a government mouthpiece on the issue of Gaza and the alleged starvation.

The mix of occasional criticism of with a constant flow of unchallenged IDF spokesperson statements passed off as news indicates Ynet likely lacks true independence and objectivity, at least when it comes to this particular conflict. A truly objective media outlet would strive to incorporate all credible perspectives, even those contradicting the government's stance - something Ynet failed to do in its reporting on the war in Gaza, at least.

Take for example this astonishing report, titled "Starvation in Gaza?", claiming there's no humanitarian crisis in Gaza, let alone Israel being the cause of it.

https://www.ynet.co.il/news/article/sys5qltaa

"Israel determines there is no humanitarian crisis in Gaza."

"Israel is urging countries and organizations to send additional aid and is working with its partners to enable new humanitarian initiatives."

And so on... No caveats or acknowledgement of contradictory evidence. The article relies solely on data and claims from Israeli government/military sources like COGAT (Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories), without including perspectives from credible international aid groups working on the ground in Gaza.

It dismisses widespread reports of starvation from agencies and human rights groups as essentially fabrications or lies, without directly addressing their evidence.

Its portrayal of there being no humanitarian crisis in Gaza directly contradicts firsthand accounts from other credible sources describing severe hunger and deprivation.

The tone and language used seems more like Israeli government messaging than objective journalism analyzing events from multiple angles.

Then take this article, published in , written by Dr. Michal Paldon, titled "Deliberate starvation is a war crime". Dr. Paldon essentially accuses Israel of being directly responsible for a "humanitarian catastrophe" and deliberate starvation of civilians in Gaza, which she states is a war crime.

https://www.haaretz.co.il/opinions/2023-12-26/ty-article-opinion/.premium/0000018c-a58d-d97c-a9ec-bfcf00990000

Dr. Paldon argues that the harsh conditions like lack of food, water, electricity and medical care are a direct result of Israel's actions and blockade during the war. She cites reports of half the Gaza population suffering from severe or extreme hunger, 90% sometimes going an entire day without food, and laying direct blame on Israel for what she calls the "inconceivable human catastrophe" unfolding in Gaza due to deliberate policies.

In contrast, the horrific massacre that Hamas carried out on October 7th against Jews simply for being Jewish falls entirely under that definition."

Reminder: "committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group" ... Hopefully these are not law school students, or math...

reports that a Magistrate's Court in Jerusalem decided on Friday afternoon to release Professor Shalhoub-Kevorkian. The police had requested to extend her arrest by a week, but the court ordered her release on bail (with an obligation to present herself for investigation.) The police requested to delay her release in order to file an appeal with the District Court.

In his decision, the judge: "After reviewing the investigative material, it appears that the background for the arrest is statements made during a podcast on March 8th, meaning at least a month has passed since then. After examining the material, there are several expressions that may cross the line from freedom of speech into incitement. "However, the question before the court is whether there is a need to continue the respondent's detention on grounds of dangerousness. Following the respondent's arrest, a search was conducted at her home and no substantial evidence was found to reinforce the dangerousness or evidence of additional offenses. Under these circumstances, I was not convinced that there is a need to continue the respondent's detention."

Even more outrageous are the following comments by an unnamed police source, which Ynet is quoting, that indicate how the police is being instrumentalized for political persecution.

"She is very dangerous to the public, dangerous and endangering every Israeli, soldier or female soldier, every kidnapped person[...] she deliberately uses libels in order to advance moves against Israel - the country in which she lives [...] Given her statements, it's a wonder that no perpetrators, stone-throwers, or child abusers have set out yet. She fabricates stories of extreme and allegedly routine and institutionalized victims, which in her words as a criminologist enable and justify criminals committing offenses against others."

[cont’d] He of the in Be’eri, , received a reprimand from the Southern Command General for “not going through the proper channels” to authorize the bombing of the al-Asraa university in Gaza

The order was given around the time of the start of Israel's trial at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, which drew international criticism. Hiram claimed there were militants in the building and tunnel openings on the premises.

The stated that during combat operations in the Gaza Strip, there are clear instructions and guidelines that determine who has the authority to approve the bombing and demolition of certain types of buildings, such as government facilities, hospitals, and other public institutions. The demolition of al-Asraa and the process of approving the bombing will be “thoroughly investigated”.
