Last night, we played the fourth and final episode of a playtest of a sci-fi #ttrpg I've been working on. It was a lot of fun and incredibly fruitful.
And I kind of want to talk about it, because it's exactly the kind of playtest I find most productive and in my experience, this isn't the sort of thing folks mean when they say playtest.
So, what's happening? Why does it work for me? And how does it differ from other playtests I've experienced?
We play all sorts of #ttrpgs across the whole spectrum. Different fiction genres, different game genres, small games, big games, experimental games, games that only existed for the few weeks we were playing them.
We, of course, have our habits and traditions, and these help us to smooth over an rough spots, points of friction between the game we're playing and how we're playing it.
Have you ever wondered how the modern #d20 came into being? The story is an unlikely one, full of bizarre twists and fortuitous encounters! #TTRPGs#gaming
What kind of #TTRPGThoughts are on your mind this Tuesday morning? What sort of design puzzles are you pondering? Games you're reading? Sessions you're planning? Tell us what's on your game brain today.
I saw some other folks on here talking about the concept of "lonely fun" related to #ttrpgs: reading sourcebooks, coming up with campaign or character ideas, all the stuff people do for fun on their own, and that was what got me to pull out my #Discworld sourcebook.
I remembered that you can read books and think about the games you want to play & the things you would like to try, and that is part of the fun. It's ok to just enjoy stuff, even if it never materializes into a live game.
I finally took some time to return to Coyote & Crow today on the blog, looking at one of the adventures from the Stories of the Free Land line, Creep. #TTRPGs#CoyoteNCrow
Still absolutely torn on whether to do #IkarosRPG style conditions in #HesperaRPG or #FudgeRPG style ones. Should I just add both to the playtest and ask which people prefer? I wanna keep the playtest focused and not get bogged down with options, but Ikaros-style conditions just don't feel "Hespera-y" enough.

Its taken a while, but we've finally cleared the Warp, the Gellar Fields are intact, and we've remained lucid enough to provide a review of Imperium Maledictum, Cubicle 7's version of the d100 Warhammer 40K RPG rules. #TTRPGs
One niche that I'm thinking about leaning into is doing 15-20 minute interviews with scientists, engineers, and researchers who play #TTRPGs. Talk about what got them into gaming and also what they work on.

#TTRPGs are a group activity, where I think you get a better experience if you design your character to be a team player. What are some of your favorite movies where the team of protagonists really worked together?
