ELISTE (1991)

I'm used to being pigeonholed by my clients, who often hire me to paint only certain kinds of subjects. So I admit I was thrown when I started reading Paula Volsky's novel ILLUSION. 1/5

A pretty young woman with disheveled white hair and tattered skirts emerges through a gate, delicately wrought in bronze and patterned with butterfly wings. One half hangs askew, falling off its hinges. On the wall next to Eliste, Posters with calls for revolution are pasted on plaster partially covering the uneven stones. Red diamonds are spray painted there. Opposite the doorway graffiti reading "DOWN WITH" cuts off at the right panel edge. A body lays face down in the snow covered street. A view through an alley reveals a raucous crowd gathered at an iron fence. Beyond, a pair of robed figures, executioners, stand on either side of stairs leading up to platform where the silhouette of a strange device rises, dark and menacing against the hazy gray city background. The shape of it suggests a figure, malevolent sentience, with white dotted eyes and the peak and fringe of a headdress suggesting the shape of a head while buttresses at each side could be arms. In the immediate foreground left, a bald man cradles a large chrome covered device, a sci-fi element that contrasts the urban squalor.

    DAETRIN (1990)

    The most unusual aspect of this commission is that it was largely painted while I was being videotaped for a local TV show. I was taking a big risk in allowing this to happen. 1/5

    A mirrored perspective staring out the viewport of an alien spaceship. The interior is framed by a series of arches. The walls are textured like rock with ripples radiating throughout. On the right of the panel, a man in white jumpsuit trimmed with orange leans against an arched bulkhead. He presses a sensor with the flat of his palm. The white light of it bathes his right half. Behind him a spaceship approaches a cool blue cloud-covered planet. In the foreground of the panel left, an alien with spiky black carapace grips the wall with one of its four arms. It reaches across its body with the lower arm opposite, fingering a similar lighted sensor with a talon. Hips round sharply as it twist its torso to reach the sensor. A sheathed dagger is belted at its waist. Behind the alien, an orange sun glows warmly in contrast to the planet mirrored on the other side of the panel.

    Another cover from The Martian Tales by Edgar Rice Burroughs. I had to be careful with Thuvia, as everyone on Barsoom goes nude, and yet full-frontal nudity was unacceptable for the cover. 1/4

    An 8-legged Martian lion bears its fangs as Thuvia leans against it with a hand in its mane. Both of their backs are turned but their faces can be seen in profile as the body of the beast curls around her. She wears more jewelry than clothing, covering herself with a lavender thong. Thin beaded chains suspend the dagger at her hip. Ornate bands contrast the tan skin on her upper arm. In the background, two marbleized moons hang over a beautiful Martian city with elegant spires. A stylized eye marks the outer wall. The landscape is mostly barren. Painted in earthy tones, the land blends with the sky and eventually fades to a gradient of purple night punctuated by stars. The shirtless body of a blonde man with pale skin lies face down next to her.

    Mid-leap, a black war horse is captured regal in profile against a backdrop of gray-clouded sky. The claw-like hooves and furry lower limbs of the mount suggest an alien world. Turning in its saddle, a red-haired man in gold armor, black cloak, and feathered cap holds a smoldering ball of fire in one hand and a mace in the other. In the low background, a city rises constructed of tall white towers topped with gold spires. Green grows throughout, nature in harmony with the classical architectural detail that includes spired domes and elegant columns.

    Anne McCaffrey often reminded readers that her Pern novels were science fiction. This scene from ALL THE WEYRS OF PERN did exactly that and was originally chosen for the cover. 1/3

    In the cargo hold of a spaceship, a dragon floats with female rider saddled high on its shoulders. Gripping reins, she cranes her neck back to glance at the viewer. Disorienting, the perspective into the cargo hold is slightly angled with the lines of interior structure not quite lining up with the wide octagonal bulkhead leading into it. There is no true horizon to orient on which prompts a sense of weightlessness and implies slow rotation. The hold itself is cropped with the right of it falling off-panel. Just past the dragon, a large porthole provides a view planet-side with sun partially obscured behind a bright arc. A red dot burns menacingly nearby. In the lower left, an access panel glows with dots of red, yellow, and green. The display screen just above is lit with a picture of the author. Her hair is white and her smile is warm.

    MARTIAN DAWN - Long-legged, a Martian Waterseeker walks across the iron-tinged soil. It has a thin winding neck like a flamingo but its skin is black. Long arms dangle down nearly touching the ground. From its head, two wide shells project like radar dishes. When closed, they form a protective egg around the whole of Waterseeker. A tail sweeps up and over its head, wide plumage that perhaps serves to block the sun.
    PLUTONIAN ZISTLES - Clumps of blue crystal rocket off and crash down on pale regolith set against a black starscape.

    EUROPA - Skating on the surface of Europa with Jupiter looming behind, a green skinned Brinker-Roo slits bulbous eyes and focuses face tentacles forward as it tilts in an aggressive turn. It has no arms and finds balance in the arc of a long spotted neck and an aft heavy with meaty thighs and bony lower legs that end in skate blades. A spiral formation on its back stretches like a Slinky. Behind, its blunt tipped tail curls upward.
