Great article.

Science publishing is central to the whole scientific endeavour, and should be governed in ways that avoid the pathologies described above. The current system poses risks to the credibility and integrity of the scientific endeavour, a crucially important issue when the proper functioning of science is so central to the whole range of human concerns. It is for these reasons that it is imperative to set acceptable standards for publishing, to identify and highlight anti-competitive activities by publishers, and to facilitate coordinated responses by institutions globally when they negotiate contracts with publishers

“The President, who exercises a limited power, may err without causing great mischief in the State. Congress may decide amiss without destroying the Union, because the electoral body in which Congress originates may cause it to retract its decision by changing its members. But if the Supreme Court is ever composed of imprudent men or bad citizens, the Union may be plunged into anarchy or civil war.” - Alexis de Tocqueville, Democracy in America, 1831

Breathless wall to wall coverage of transphobia from Sunak, Starmer, and Farage, but nothing at all on the trans kids protesting their exclusion from health care.

Same link I shared yesterday. Pleas spread it far and wide.

Know what would destroy the Roberts Court faster than anything? A Judges' Revolt.

If I were a federal judge, I'd decline to honor any of the controversial Roberts Court decisions. I'd openly say, "that decision is not good law because the Court as currently constituted is corrupt and illegitimate, and to follow its decrees would be to violate my oath to the Constitution."

Impeach me. Do it. See if you can get the Senate votes. Otherwise, I'm appointed for life. Now imagine if dozens of federal judges, trial and appellate, did the same thing.

Yes, I am a lawyer. Yes, I am serious.

(Also, although I respect the way Judge Merchan has carefully avoided grounds for appeal, if I were him I'd expend all my accumulated moral capital at sentencing, by creating a record listing every bad thing Trump has ever done then sentencing him to immediately begin serving at least 4.5 years in a real prison, making it impossible for him to act as President even if reelected without SCOTUS stepping in again.)

We are planning to release new Mastodon security updates for versions 4.1, 4.2 and nightly this Thursday, Jul 04, at 15:00 UTC. It solves multiple security issues, including a major one. We encourage server administrators to plan for a timely upgrade to ensure their Mastodon server is protected.

@MastodonEngineering Just saying, releasing a major security update on one of the biggest holidays per capita in the world is an interesting play.

Mastodon powers over 9,000 different fediverse servers and is used by around a million people every month, but did you know the core engineering team is just two people? Well, I'm delighted to announce that now it's three people! Welcome to the team, @dave!

My new post: "At its moment of peril, democracy needs journalists to be activists"

"Dear journalists: This is your moment, your opportunity.

"It’s your chance, maybe your final one, to stand proudly for reality and democracy, for freedom of expression, for human rights. Stand up as journalism’s best — think Ida B. Wells and Edward R. Murrow, among so many others — did in earlier times as they challenged a tide of political evil and helped America change its course."

Nobody loves that Joe Biden is 81. It would be great if he was 35. But you know what I really dislike? Authoritarianism. So I humbly beseech people to get a goddamn grip.

Now everyone can see what SCOTUS does when 6 of them are appointed by the right.

What people don't understand is even if the Democrats codified abortion rights and everything most people want into law, this SCOTUS can still rule the laws as unconstitutional.

This is why people tell you to vote for the best candidate and the one who won’t appoint right wing nut jobs to courts. This all could have been averted had people done that in 2016. Please at least learn something from this.

Robert Towne, the Oscar-winning screenplay writer of “Shampoo,” “The Last Detail” and other acclaimed films whose work on “Chinatown” became a model of the art form and helped define the jaded allure of his native Los Angeles.
