I helped work on that game. One of the devs on it was one of the authors of the original Lode Runner. The logic for how the monks chase you was lifted directly from the original code - nothing else was as fun. We tried making the monks smarter and it was just too difficult.
That totally makes sense. The monks being kind of dumb and acting in a predictable way adds to the fun. They follow a set of rules the the player learns how to manipulate as they play.
MisterFPGA has a real image problem. It just exudes "complicated". Visit the homepage and witness exposed boards and adapters shooting everywhere, along with constant talk about loading cores and updates.
SuperNT/MegaSG and RetroUSB's AVS are popular because they remove that barrier for entry. This one promises to do that, but obviously people are skeptical. The fact they want to launch without full Dreamcast capabilities and say it'll be updated later means they already put up a barrier for entry.
In the long run Metal Gear certainly outshined them, but I think the Syphon Filter games were ultimately very different and so it wasn’t like one was just a better execution and you had to ignore the other.
One of my favorite little bits of goofy trivia between both series though was the joke in the dialog of MGS 3 : Subsistence where Snake asks the Colonel why “Sam” (presumably Sam Fisher of the Splinter Cell series) or “Gabe” (presumably Syphon Filter’s protagonist) couldn’t do the Ape Escape side mission instead since Snake said it wasn’t really his “thing.”
There's zero attempt to hide the branding on the actual product. Nintendo logo on the main shell, GBC sticker on the back. Hell, they even include the "Questions and Service" 1-800 number sticker for the back Front Back
The fact that they included the service sticker on the back is 10/10. How long until Nintendo gets them blocked outside China (the company appears to be Chinese)?
