Do you feel we would lose anything, if more Mastodon servers allowed longer posts? On many servers the limit is 500 characters, which means we sometimes see texts that span multiple posts.
Would more characters be good or bad?

@randahl 100% good. Longer posts get collapsed with 'read more' so they don't appear to take up the entire timeline. On the contrary, a thread of a dozen posts all at once will fill two screens.

Threads of shorter posts are a much worse experience in every way. If people have more to say, then just let them say it.

@picard I agree. I also think the “read more” solution is the best of both worlds.

@randahl The 'read more' solution is such an elegant way to do it to avoid the clutter!

@randahl 1000, 2000 and beyond. I’ll just tap out and unfollow when it becomes to long winded. That’s the beauty of no algorithms :)

@randahl Psssst! We've got a 1000 character limit over here! ;-)

@randahl The resulting data won't be all that good if you don't include a "neutral" option.

@anne_twain good point. I will remember that for next time.
