The Fediverse isn't just sharing links to other platforms, it goes a lot deeper than that. Fediverse discussions and interactions happen across multiple platforms. This happens so seamlessly, you may not even realise it is happening.
For example, I replied to a PeerTube account's post from Mastodon, and my reply appeared on PeerTube (see screenshots).
The significance of the recent #Ghost announcement is people on Mastodon etc will be able to interact seamlessly with Ghost blogs.
@FediTips
Does this mean that mastodon has to be able to render correctly Peertube posts? And Lemmy posts? Does it "force" Mastodon to be able to render all kids of stuff? Just wondering
No one is being "forced" to do stuff, it's just that there's a common technical standard called ActivityPub which is used by Mastodon, PeerTube, Pixelfed etc. Because they use the same standard, servers running Activitypub-compatible software are able to communicate with each other.
It's up to each platform's software to decide how it renders content that uses ActivityPub, whether it's from its own platform or elsewhere.
@FediTips
But my point is, yes, ActivityPub is the common language for the content, but on top of that the content each platform produces on top of ActivityPub it is meant to be displayed within their own application.
Idk, I'm not an expert but I tried not to create a Lemmy account and instead use this account to read Lemmy and it felt broken. I ended up creating an account there.
Yes, it's not perfect, some content won't "work" on some platforms because it has no means of displaying it correctly (for example Playlists from PeerTube can't be seen on Mastodon).
But things like following, comments and likes generally do work.
@FediTips@namelivia In the same way a video on PeerTube becomes a post with a video on Mastodon, a playlist could be rendered as a thread of posts with videos. It will all depend on the ingenuity of developers to adapt the content to the different presentations. If you think deeply about it, the underlying content types are the same (a text/post, an image, a video, a comment, a like) what changes is how they’re presented.
@FediTips oh that's so cool! I must have missed the news that they are integrate ActivityPub. I was planning on migrating my blogs to WordPress this year because of the missing integration.
@FediTips Good stuff. We could really use quote toots tho! Also whenever I click on a toot link contained within a toot, it opens a new tab on which I’m not logged in
I'm not sure what the status is on quote toots, to be honest!
Originally Mastodon said they would never allow quoting due to its abusive nature on Twitter, then they said they were looking at allowing it on an opt-in basis, then there was a more recent announcement that they might have received funding specifically to work on an opt-in version...
It's difficult to know when/if it might happen though. Sorry I can't be more help.
