@GottaLaff They're no worse than many U.S. firms, and in some respects even better. It's just China bashing. There's plenty to criticize China about, but this is just bipartisan political grandstanding by politicians who in some cases don't have the technical understanding to change a light bulb without assistance.
@GottaLaff I can't help but think this TikTok bill is just a scheme to get a popular social media app into the hands of the billionaire cabal. But regardless of intent, that will be the result.
@GottaLaff
If Congress votes for a TikTok ban it will seriously anger many ppl 30 and under. There will be political fallout that I believe the anti China folks are underestimating
2/ Politico adds: "... as well as impose sanctions and other punitive measures against Russia, China and Iran.
The bill, filled with GOP policy sweeteners, was included in Speaker Mike Johnson’s foreign aid funding package as a way to bolster Republican support for tens of billions of dollars in long-delayed aid for Ukraine, Israel and the Indo-Pacific. The House approved the measure in an overwhelming 360-58 vote."
@GottaLaff I hope that they will vote to ban Facebook, Reddit, X, and every other “free” social platform that mines and sells our personal data to anyone willing to pay.
Interesting… I get it… but there’s more here, I think, than just China… too many young people use it to communicate and the gop can’t have that… and some reports state TikTok is being maligned by competitors and they have pushed this issue to congress. I don’t use it so whatever… but millions do and it’s a concern for them.
It was kids on TikTok who kept ordering all the free tickets to Trump’s 2020 rallies and not showing up. One time Brad Parscale promised Trump that like 800,000 people were gonna come to one of his rallies based on tickets given out, but it was all TikTokers who were fucking around and the rally ended up being almost empty. I’m certain this organizing power among The Youngs has left a bad taste in politicians’ mouths!
