For anyone who was wondering about the "Democracy Dies Behind Paywalls" story from The Atlantic...

Open in Firefox's reader mode, then refresh the page. Poof, democracy is saved.

And in case you don't have Firefox, here's a link to the text as a proof of concept:

I'm sure this is intended behavior and not a bug, because it would be a weird PR nightmare to title a story like this and then put it behind a paywall on the internet. Like...it would just be asking for people to share the irony in viral posts. So, again, this Firefox thing must be like a hidden Konami code for fans of the site or something.

@mozilla, thanks for helping save democracy (and making such useful products) 💕

@alice @mozilla The strong case for Public Broadcasting a la the BBC World Service as it used to be. It is very sad that decades of trust has been eroded but that is another story.

Real journalists need to be paid right? Why is it encumbent on them to work for nothing to 'save YOUR democracy'?

Note the bad guys will continue to deliver their message and get paid handsomely for it without the consent of their target audience. They won't quit and take a 'real job'. You are making it worse. 🤷‍♀️

@alice
It's nice there is a work around and all but I think the 1st point of this is news should be free.
The 2nd point is that you really shouldn't have to do fancy computer moves to make it free if it technically isn’t.
Not a moral quandary, mind you. I pirate everything. But the gymnastics isn't worth the info.

@alice @mozilla saving articles to Pocket seems to eliminate the paywall too but this is so much easier 🙏

@alice oh that's brilliant, works with other sites using an account prompt.

    @alice @tehstu I have checked on this article and yes, switch and refresh works, at least on Android. I think it is possible to set Firefox to open in reader mode by default as well, at least for certain sites and/or pages but I have been very lax with looking into this, primarily because until recently I was using iOS and Firefox there is just a wrapper fir the Safari Browser, essentially.

    @alice $1 for six months??? I think the minimum shakedown I've seen is $15.
