Parched farms, cancelled classes: Extreme heat scorches South-East Asia
"Due to the unbearable heat, the [#Philippines'] Department of Education has allowed #schools to either hold remote lessons or cancel classes altogether.
The country is also in the process of shifting back to a June to March academic calendar, following complaints among students and teachers over holding classes during the peak summer season."
Again:
"The Philippines has closed schools and warned of overloading on its power grid, as authorities across South-East Asia issued health alerts for a deadly heatwave."
"#Thailand is reeling under the grip of a severe #heatwave with temperatures soaring to record highs in some areas and authorities warned of harsher weather in the coming days.
#Bangkok’s heat index – a measure of how hot it feels like when humidity is taken into account – was listed as above 52 degrees Celsius on Tuesday."
Maximum temperatures recorded:
115F in India
110F in Bangladesh
115F in Myanmar
111F in the Philippines
111F in Vietnam
"Most experts agree that #ClimateChange is one of the major causes of the brutal heat hitting Asia this spring, and scientists said last year that climate change was making heat waves 100 times more likely to occur."
@CelloMomOnCars It's a real indictment upon our culture that big business has been so successful in spreading doubt about climate change when we are so awash with evidence. Not a wonder that the lies of Putin & Trump so easily take hold. The currency of good will and common sense has been devalued in the marketplace.
“The frequency, intensity, duration and the area covered by these heatwaves are increasing over time. We are on a rollercoaster ride in terms of temperature, which is not going to come down any time soon. It’s going to be worse, which means we need to be prepared.”
@stuffjolikes@CelloMomOnCars It really feels like we are living that book on some sort of fast forward. Science fiction that has jumped through time to become our present reality.
