You can restrict who can see your posts with post visibilities. There are four kinds:

-"Public" is visible to everyone.

-"Unlisted" is visible to everyone but doesn't show up in searches or trends.

-"Followers-Only" is only visible to people who follow you. If you use this, switch on follow requests too so you can screen who gets to see your Followers-Only posts.

-"Mentions" is only visible to accounts mentioned in the post.

@FediTips Can I restrict seeing my own posts? Everyone else seeing it is fine, I just don't want to subject myself to that mess...

@catsalad

Unfortunately there's no mute button for your own account 😁 I guess you could post from one account but read timelines from another?

EDIT: Wait, I think there might be a way to do this!

If you create a list, then add your own account to it, then mute that list from your Home timeline, that may work.

Info on using Lists here: https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-the-lists-feature-on-mastodon/

EDIT 2: Oh I think you said you already do that for your other accounts? Just tested and you can add your own account to lists.

@FediTips Hey! I think you're right...

Self mute test 🤫
Delete & repost test after manual mute..

@FediTips Okay, it works! Manual self mute works too (just never tried it). Thanks for the suggestion!

@FediTips

I don't think unlisted shows up in timelines as well as searches or trends.

FediTips OP ,
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services avatar

@alienghic

Yeah, I couldn't fit the whole explanation in the post 😁 but it is in the linked article.

Unlisted doesn't show up in the Live Feeds (Federated & Local timelines), and it doesn't show up in searches or trends.

However, Unlisted posts do show up in people's Home timelines if they are following the account that posted it.

@FediTips

Ah, OK.

I had been using unlisted when I ended up in a pointless argument with someone that I suspected would just annoy everyone else.

FediTips OP ,
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services avatar

@alienghic

This is where it gets slightly complicated 😃

Public and Unlisted replies don't show up in anyone's Home timelines...

UNLESS...

...the owner of the Home timeline follows you AND the person you are replying to. This also includes threads where someone is replying to themselves.

@FediTips @alienghic When i joined Mastodon everyone told me that i should use "unlisted" when i reply to a toot, so that it doesnt spam the federated/locat TL. but i feel like everyone else just uses "public". the fact that u cant even use "unlisted" on the official mastodon app makes me wonder if i should keep doing it or not 🤔 how do u guys handle this?

FediTips OP ,
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services avatar

@Turr1caN

I would say carry on using unlisted in replies, it can't do any harm and it can help keep timelines/searches cleaner

The official Mastodon app has many missing features, would strongly recommend third party apps instead. (Some third party apps have unlisted by default for replies, by the way.)

The lack of "unlisted" on the official app is probably why you're seeing lots of people not using it, they don't even know it exists because the app is missing that setting.

@FediTips yeah, makes sense. thx for your input.

@FediTips @alienghic

Let say I reply to account A in a toot that mentions B, like:

@A @B hello

And my reply is set to unlisted, while neither A or B follow me.

Would B not see the my toot? 🧠 I assume A would at least because of the reply.

(this toot is set to unlisted)

FediTips OP ,
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services avatar

@DavidMarzalC @alienghic

B would see it because they're mentioned. If you mention an account it always sees it, no matter what visibility it is set to.

But if there was a person C who follows you but doesn't follow A or B, then they wouldn't see your reply in their Home timeline.

@FediTips for what it's worth this doesn't seem to be true on akkoma - my home timeline is full of replies to posts i can't see. i suppose most of the people you're talking to are probably on mastodon, and this feels like a bug in akkoma rather than an intentional difference. But it is the case nonetheless.

FediTips OP ,
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services avatar

@yayroos

It sounds like a bug, or some option that doesn't exist on Masto?

@FediTips
Thanks, that's great. I have unlisted as default so I don't spam the timelines (home, local or federated).

@DavidMarzalC

Just for reference, unlisted doesn't make any difference on Home. Public behaves the same way as Unlisted on the Home timeline.
