While the US military aid has flatlined, and Olaf Scholz will not send Taurus missiles, Russia has just dropped one of the first ODAB-1500 thermobaric bombs.

Thermobaric weapons spread a cloud of flammable liquid and then ignites the cloud, creating a deadly blast followed by a lethal vacuum which rupture the lungs on humans.

Does anyone think Putin is worried about this being an escalation?

Stop talking. Give Ukraine every thinkable weapon, so they can defeat the evil before it spreads.

@randahl
Germany's Olaf Scholz will not send missiles as he is a traitor to the West and an admirer of Putin

Olaf Scholz knows that the can give Ukraine 🇺🇦 a big advantage, so he won't give them

It is insane that is not being kicked out for his dangerously treasonous behavior towards

Olaf Scholz wants 🇺🇦 to lose this war and continue doing business as usual with Russia

randahl OP ,
@randahl@mastodon.social avatar

@musictraveler I am sorry, but this is not rooted in fact. You can acuse Olaf Scholz of many things, but claiming he is an “admirer of Putin” has no merit.

Please remember, Olaf Scholz was central to moving Germany from pure pacifism to now contributing more to Ukraine than the US.

I agree, denying Ukraine the Taurus missiles seems wrong, but it is a huge leap from that to the conclusion that there should be some kind of sympathy between Scholz and Putin.

musictraveler ,
@musictraveler@mastodon.online avatar

@randahl

You are partly right

But at 75 billion, the is still far above Germany in contributions for aid to 🇺🇦

In addition has delayed for a very long time in supplying deadly weapons

Even now, Germany only supplies weapons that cannot really damage Russia beyond repair

To me personally, at least, I do not trust and for me it seems that Scholz is doing this consciously but 🤷🏻‍♀️ time will tell

randahl OP ,
@randahl@mastodon.social avatar

@musictraveler When I say, Germany is providing more aid than the US, I mean when comparing the aid to the GDP of each country.

The US is a country of 333 million people. Germany is a country of 84 million. So I do not recommend comparing aid by the nominal dollar amount.

If we did that, citizens of larger countries could always support Ukraine less, and still claim to be leading.

musictraveler ,
@musictraveler@mastodon.online avatar

@randahl
This time I fully agree with you 👍

The U.S. has only committed 0.32% of its GDP toward Ukraine aid, which falls below the percentages committed by the UK (0.55%) and Germany just (0.57%)

But countries like Denmark and Estonia have each committed aid totaling more than 2% of their gross domestic product, with Estonia being the highest, at 3.55%

Norway, Lithuania, Latvia, Finland and Poland also stand out among the highest donors by share of GDP 🤷🏻‍♀️

Update: While the weapon is new, this is not the first time Russia has used it in Ukraine weapon, but likely just one of the first times.

@randahl My fingers are crossed here in the USA. Most here don't understand the danger Russia poses. "We ought to be friends." No.

Ukraine is supposedly getting F-16s now. They can carry Mk84s and we have lots of them to give.

@randahl I keep repeating myself. If Scholz does not want to send Taurus, his real mistake is to say it and not use it as bargaining power. He could use it at least to draw red lines!

    These thermo[bar]baric weapons seem like a horrible way to die.. doesn’t this violate the Geneva Convention?

    randahl OP ,
    @randahl@mastodon.social avatar

    @darthwonka according to The International Committee of the Red Cross, thermobaric weapons are not by themselves illegal, but of course they can easily be used in ways that are illegal, for instance if they cause civilian casualties.

    Easy. We send NATO. I mean it's not an art. 5 country where we MUST help, but it is a country where we MAY help.
    Almost everything is already there (except Air Force), time for the people with the nametag 'NATO-OTAN'.

    @randahl They have used thermobaric bombs since the start of the war. This isn't new.

    randahl OP ,
    @randahl@mastodon.social avatar

    @TheJen The thermobaric weapons previously used in Ukraine were the 173 kg rockets of TOS-1A.

    When these were used, Ukraine often managed to fire back and destroy the launcher vehicles.

    These new ODAB-1500 are enormous glide bombs which are launched from an aircraft far away from the target, and it is presently unknown if Ukraine will find a counter measure.

    randahl OP , (edited )
    @randahl@mastodon.social avatar

    @MindTGap I have no idea what is going on with the Scholz theater. All I know is, it must stop right now.

    Russia has these 1500 kg. glide bombs on the way, and more. If we do not commit fully to arming Ukraine, we will eventually reach a point, where there will not be any Ukrainian soldiers left to fight this fight.

    Some people may think they do not care. But they will care, once they realise, this means their own young men and women are next, after the last Ukrainian hero has fallen.
