Hey classic Mac folks. I've decided that I'm going to use my new LC 475 as my main desktop. My @BlueSCSI just showed up and I'm getting the system recapped so it should be pretty reliable. I'm really looking forward to it! But, I was an Amiga/Linux kid and I don't know much about Macs. It'll be running system 7.5 and I need software recommendations. I need a:

  • Word processor
  • ANSI C compiler
  • Terminal with SSH
  • Text editor

Thanks!

@BlueSCSI
The machine came with Claris Works. So I figure I have a "license" for that. 😁

@ipxfong @BlueSCSI I've used NiftyTelnet which has SSH support, but sadly it doesn't support newer versions of SSH. I know there are some newly developed clients for vintage Macs, but I can't remember their names.

@claudiom
Thanks! SSH isn't that big of a deal. I can always telnet to my local BSD machine and SSH out of it. I'd just like to skip that step because I'm lazy. 😉

@ipxfong Yeah, I was going to mention that as well. I did that with my classic Macs and BeOS Mac clone. Had them connect to telnet to the Power Mac G5 running Debian and then SSH from there. :flan_thumbs:

@claudiom
Did you ever try Yellowdog Linux? I heard it was pretty good on ppc systems. Speaking of, I have a G4 Mac mini. I ought to get it running as well. Might be fun to have an OS 9 system.

claudiom ,
@claudiom@bsd.network avatar

@ipxfong Oh yes, very early on when it was still being developed actively! I had it running on a Power Mac 9600 where I worked at the time. :flan_smile:

@ipxfong If you follow @ActionRetro on YouTube, he has a TON of episodes where he puts Linux on various PowerPC Macs, as well as Haiku and other things on skme PCs, notbto mention his "shenanigans" in between. :flan_wink:

He did one where he put OpenBSD/macppc on an PowerPC iMac. :puffer: :runbsdBg:

Fun! I got my Mac mini to play around with MorphOS but never really got into it. Maybe OpenBSD would be a cool alternative.

@ipxfong MorphOS is one I want to get for my PowerPC Macs! 🦋 @ActionRetro

@claudiom @ipxfong I have MorphOS on my iBook G4. I love my Amigas, and Ihate to say this, but the only reason I haven't wiped MorphOS and installed something else is because I paid over $100 CAD for a license.

ipxfong OP ,
@ipxfong@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@septemberagenda @claudiom
Yeah, that was what kept me from really getting into it. 😁

That and the fact that I sorta feel like OS 1.3 and 2.1 were technically and aesthetically focused and after that, things went a little off the rails.

@septemberagenda@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@ipxfong @claudiom I really enjoyed MorphOS at first - the Iris email client, Wayfarer browser, up-to-date media player, and SSH client were high points, as was compatibility with Amiga programs like AmiGemini, AmiSSL, and AmRSS. But after a while, incompatibilities and quirkiness got to be too much.

Just me, though. I certainly wouldn't want to discourage anyone from trying MorphOS.

@claudiom@bsd.network avatar

@septemberagenda @ipxfong Yeah, I was aware of the cost, but I think it's worth it. I'd rather pay that for MorphOS than for Windows, honestly. The Amiga has ALWAYS fascinated me, and from what I've heard, MorphOS is very Amiga-like. I'm a big fan of BeOS and Haiku, and I hear Amigans tend to be fond of it for similar reasons.

Same Claudio, I always wanted an Amiga. A decade ago I bought an Amiga 4000. Which was not the one to get as an Amiga newbie! It was overwelming, next time I'll find a 500 or 1200 and try from there. I've mainly just emulated it though and NOT understood the OS at all.

@thedaemon What made it so overwhelming? Very new to Amiga overall since I never owned one. :flan_confused: @septemberagenda @ipxfong

It was a heavily modified 4000d with a larger case and more drives and stuff that I didn't know about XD. I ended up shipping it to Poland. Mostly it was overwhelming because I didn't understand how to use it and it was not all working. You'll have a blast. Although I still don't understand the stuff like S: and things like that, probably a good idea to take it slow lol.

@thedaemon @claudiom @ipxfong Amiga OS can seem really arcane at first, I admit. Heck, even after nearly 40 years of using the things, I still get lost.

@septemberagenda @thedaemon @claudiom
It's funny, when I was using my Amiga as my daily driver I remember it seeming really straight forward. But, after not using an Amiga for decades, it's pretty arcane. I spun up an emulated system and I couldn't figure out what I was doing. 😅

@septemberagenda@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@ipxfong @thedaemon @claudiom Yup. I gotta be honest, I’m kind of dreading setting my A4000D back up from scratch once it returns from being recapped.
