Interesting read: How to Sustain a Scientific Open-Source Software Ecosystem: Learning from the Astropy Project https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2402.15081

(from https://mastoxiv.page/@arXiv_csSE_bot/111996460961824995)

I'd love to do something like this for the @turingway - when I suddenly get loads of time on my hands.

Maybe this summer? 😂 😬

@toothFAIRy Very interesting! Thanks for sharing.

I particularly liked the discussion in "4.2.Tension between Different Mindsets"

(...) professional software engineers believe it is important to follow SE best practices and utilize automated workflows, such as continuous Integration and continuous Delivery (CI/CD), to reduce maintenance burden. As a result, they often explain to scientists that their code submission does not meet the code quality standard and needs refactoring. (...)

@lavergnetho Really interesting part about the two sides (engineer or scientist) of the software development indeed!

@toothFAIRy indeed. And also the part where SEs didn't find their contribution to be as obvious to communicate or highlight as those of the scientists (who can present at conferences or write papers).

I am starting on an project with both scientists and SEs and I am sure the initial discussions will be "interesting" 😅🫣.
