This is terrifying. Police in the UK will be given the power to arrest people if they are wearing face coverings at specific demonstrations, the Home Office has said. Protesters who wear masks could face arrest, up to a month in jail, and a £1,000 fine.
@luckytran no, Police in England and Wales. Please don’t conflate that as the U.K. There are 3 distinct legal entities across the constituent nations that make up the U.K. Scotland and NI have their own laws and in Scotland’s case a very different and separate legal system
@luckytran Wow, I’m in America and I wear my mask a lot. I wouldn’t be in a crowd without one. Sounds like they’re trying to stifle the right to protest.
@luckytran They fine us for not wearing masks. They fine us for wearing masks. The only consistent thing is the fine, which violates the bill of rights. Don't pay. #fines#forfeitures
"Grants of Forfeitures.
That all Grants and Promises of Fines and Forfeitures of particular persons before Conviction are illegal and void."
@luckytran honestly it is not worth whipping up what is political gesturing in the first place. The #Met have to make pragmatic decisions every second and that’s exactly the kind of stuff that’s entirely unenforceable. Brown and black people will continue getting detained under the many clown pretences already used and masked white people will be perfectly fine. The fate of #Climateactivists is #postcodelottery dependent.
