The new infosec database server is running Ubuntu 24.04. Can I just tell you how excited I was to have to run systemctl daemon-reload after editing fstab and trying to mount a new disk?

@jerry only if I get to tell you how excited I am that 24.04 uses Python 3.12 and will insist that you use a virtualenv for every single python project you want to run on your host if you want to let pip manage the packages. Otherwise you have to use the --break-system-packages switch, or use whatever python package verison and/or name is in the apt-get repos for system-wide packages.

@jerry show me where systemd broke you

@jerry any issues with wal-g?

jerry OP ,
@jerry@infosec.exchange avatar

@imclaren no, it is working great. I moved it the new database server without any issues. The one thing I do need to work on is the cost of storage. My wasabi bill is close to $300/month and it’s just 30 days of database backups.

@jerry @imclaren uhhhh, are you using a service that lets you bypass Wasabi's 90 day minimum storage duration policy?

jerry OP ,
@jerry@infosec.exchange avatar

@fencepost @imclaren no, I don’t think I’m aware of such a service

@fencepost@infosec.exchange avatar

@jerry @imclaren pretty sure there's at least one online backup provider that has that kind of agreement with Wasabi, but my question was also meant to ask 'you know you're paying for 90 days even if you delete them earlier, right?'

@jerry nasty. I’m using backblaze b2 and living with the occasional unannounced maintenance windows.

If Hetzner ever creates a s3 service, I will be very tempted to move all of my infrastructure to Hetzner.

@jerry ohhhh, was it this? https://www.bentasker.co.uk/posts/documentation/linux/480-disk-automatically-unmounts-immediately-after-mounting.html

Systemd's approach to mounts (or, I guess, operator experience) drives me nuts

@jerry Sorry, what? This is good or bad? I don't get it. Did you had issues?

I'm pretty mad towards Canonical to be honest, because with Ubuntu 22.04, they only ship with Snap. And you can't even install .deb files anymore. Yeah, crazy stuff. Unless you use the command line: apt install <deb file>. But we are talking about Ubuntu Desktop 24.04, which suppose to be for a generic Linux user. I will never recommend Ubuntu for (new) users.

jerry OP ,

@melroy I am going to have to break down and learn snap. I use Ubuntu’s live patch extensively and there aren’t many alternatives.

I was complaining about how systemd is taking over everything in Linux lately

@jerry @melroy you could always run RHEL on a dev for individuals sub. ;). still systemd. but no snaps.

@jerry @melroy Honestly Snaps and Flatpaks aren't half bad. Just depends on what you're deploying or using them for. Browsers with both have some annoying limitations though....

@jerry Ah yes, the release that made me wonder for like 30 minutes why openssh was ignoring my port configuration
