Not sure what the scam would have been, but I do love messing with them.

metacurity ,
@metacurity@infosec.exchange avatar

@jerry Me too. After messing with two or three of these folks, they've stopped sending me texts.

standev ,
@standev@mastodon.online avatar

@jerry did you insist that they didn’t have the wrong number, you really were Delia the disgraced yoga instructor, or did things end there?

jerry OP ,
@jerry@infosec.exchange avatar

@standev I let it end there. People have given me feedback that it’s probably someone doing this against their will

@jerry “I haven’t practiced yoga, well, not since the accident. I took one look at the remains and swore I’d never take another student again. You don’t come back from that.. the screams.. the mass of twisted limbs… no, no, I’ll never get over what happened at Macho Grande.. I’m sorry but you’ll have to find another teacher if you want to play that wicked game, I won’t cast those dice again with human lives on the line”

distinctm1nd ,

@jerry I ask them for the money they owe me. Lol

nilz ,
@nilz@norden.social avatar

@jerry

They just checked if this is an active number. Now the phishing and scam activities will begin.

jontringham ,
@jontringham@mas.to avatar

@jerry there’s a common spam call in the UK pretending to be car insurance, always opening “we’re calling about your recent accident”. I always respond “it wasn’t an accident, they deserved it!”

While it's certainly entertaining isn't it a problem to answer to spammers? They now know that your number is valid and someone reads their messages. :thinking:

@jerry My wife gets these, seeming to lead to opportunities in work doing bogus product or restaurant reviews. They stop answering when she asks them about scam reviews.

@jerry I mess with so many of them. It is Also a favorite of mine. It is hilarious and sad.

@jerry Back in my youth day, I loved to pick up any ringing phone and shout „Catholic horse cemetery Eckernförde - Emergency Room, how can I help you?“

patrick_townsend ,

@jerry Yeah, lately it has been "Where are you, you were supposed to be here an hour ago." I love the layer of guilt-tripping added in. I don't get the bitcoin scams. Maybe I've been a bit harsh on cryptocurrencies?

18+ nickesc ,
@nickesc@infosec.exchange avatar

@jerry I used to like messing with them too, it felt like I was getting back at them for trying to scam me. Then I watched a John Oliver episode about how a lot of people sending the messages are being kept against their will and forced to send tons of these scams every day and i cannot bring myself to anymore

@jerry

I'm glad I'm not the only one who does this to these obvious spammers

JessTheUnstill ,

@jerry
I especially love messing with people who ask for $deadname.

My personal favorite is:

"Oh, I'm so sorry, he's not with us anymore. I'm his twin sister who killed him and stole his body though. Can I help you instead?"

jerry OP ,
@jerry@infosec.exchange avatar

@JessTheUnstill 😂 I am sure that throws them for a loop

captainslim ,
@captainslim@infosec.exchange avatar

@jerry I get tons of these. It might be fun to mess with them, but in many cases the people on the other end have been trafficked by criminal syndicates and are forced to scam against their will.

@jerry I had someone try the car wrap scam on me a year or so ago. I played them for quite a while. They sent me cashiers checks to “my apartment” (Wrigley Field) and then I said send it to “my work” (FBI field office in Chicago).

Then I said I got it but had to drive to Windsor Canada to deposit it. They texted me throughout my “drive” across the border.

Lots of fun.

A request for an iTunes gift card, if earlier this week is any indication

jerry OP ,
@jerry@infosec.exchange avatar

@isilzha314 I’ve had that one too. I’ve had a bunch that end in some sort of crypto currency investment nonsense.
