👍🏻In a sweeping change that could improve millions of Americans’ ability to own a home or buy a car, the administration will propose a rule Tuesday to ban medical debt from credit reports.

Maybe medical debt is unavoidable and unfair but it does impact the ability of people to repay loans. Seems like more foreclosures and repos in the future. The fix is to do something to reduce medical debt.

That's quite helpful.
Now the next step is universal healthcare so medical debt is never an issue for staying alive.

@GottaLaff The CFPB is on a roll lately!

Lawsuit brought to fight it by banks, medical, and pharmaceutical companies in 3... 2...

How about raising the minimum wage and taxing the rich.

Enough with using credit to hide the fact wages are worth less now that they did at the end of the 1960s. This is the same tired old "miracle" that both Reagan and Thacher branded as their own - remove burden of the costs of living in a society from the rich and shove it onto the poor in the form of enhanced debt. The banks and credit agencies love it, especially those "whales" that only manage to cover the interest.

@Theriac How about appreciating this AND saying what you said? I do.

How does that help ifmedical debt ends up bankrupting you?

draNgNon , avatar

@GottaLaff this is a very sensible move, given that medical debt is not cleared by bankruptcy.

I'd rather see it go the other way though (leave it on credit reports, allow bankruptcy to clear it)

@GottaLaff God damn, what a good idea

GhostOnTheHalfShell , avatar

@GottaLaff An even more fundamental change is needed. Credit score should not go up with debt burden. It’s the most toxic thing, we must go into deep debt for a good credit score.

Callalily , avatar

That's good news.

@GottaLaff it's an election year, so promises to me are just that. I'll believe it when I see it, but this is absolutely a good thing for Americans if it does happen. Election years so much gets throw out I'm jaded, but nonetheless this is a good thing.

wadewainio , avatar

@GottaLaff It is also something that matters deeply to most people: Their future access to affordable homes and transportation.

GREAT! This is the way.

But.....there's also Medicare for All, too. :blobfoxdealwithitfingerguns:

@GottaLaff this is great news, but of course, there should be no such thing as 'medical debt' anyway.

In the UK we use these stories to ward off the numerous attempts to privatise our NHS, something both Blue and Red teams want to do.

They have to hide it now, because we're so against it, they have to be sly.
