‘Do not drive’: #Toyota recalls 50,000 older US cars over deadly airbag fears Toyota said on Monday it is urging the owners of 50,000 older US vehicles to get immediate recall repairs because an airbag inflator could explode and potentially kill motorists.
@GottaLaff Yup, that’s my Corolla. A common reason that so many people (and myself) haven’t bothered to get the recall done before now is because the original notices were “airbag malfunction”, which doesn’t immediately bring to mind “metal projectiles to the face”. For people who live hours from the closest dealership, this is important information. 🙄
@Yup_Its_Holly@GottaLaff I owned a 1999 Mercury with a defective wiring harness, for the air bags. Trust me. Get this fixed. You do not want the damned things inflating inadvertently. It is like having a shotgun discharge inside the car. Repair couldn't say why my airbags deployed while driving in a 25 mph zone. A year later, the cars were recalled for replacement of the wiring harness, without further information.
@LittleTownJane@GottaLaff Oh no… Hopefully you were OK. This is pretty much what the guy at the dealership said when I spoke to him. I have an appointment this Friday. 👍
@GottaLaff Have they said if pulling the airbag fuse mitigates the risk until you can get it repaired? Lots of people who work normal jobs can't just "do not drive" and that would probably be useful information.
@GottaLaff ngl better to have a company doing recalls than letting people die. And if these issues are a result in a surge in injury nearly 20 years later this is more like "yo this air bag inflator is old now replace it or you could get injured or even die"
@GottaLaff Your source forgot to include:
"...... and General Motors are telling the owners of about 61,000 older Corolla, Matrix, RAV4 and Pontiac Vibe models in the U.S. to stop driving them because their Takata air bag inflators are at risk of exploding and hurling shrapnel."
