Fedi-friends: if you get value from the fediverse, please consider donating to support your instance. Most instances are completely volunteer run and funded via donations. Some instances charge a fee to have an account, and that model likely works well. I, and many others, believe that it’s important for people who may not be able to afford it to have a social connection.

If you are able to, and not already doing so, I ask you to please consider supporting your instance. I am extremely fortunate to have generous members, however not instances are so fortunate, so here I am, asking on their behalf.

I appreciate all of you and hope you have a great week.

@jerry What he said - The isn’t like #X you’ll see no ads but it’d be enormously helpful to “toss a coin to “the Witcher” If it helps to think of the as Geralt well...what ever works, cause THEY are what keeps this place
working & they’re doing an amazing job. They keep the gears running & the monsters at bay. Make sure it’s your server that you tip & not just Mastodon or you could do both if you want to. 🥰

@jerry thanks for the reminder. Just donated to mine!

@jerry I have no idea what is referred to as the Fedi-verse. Seems people always take simple ideas and camouflage it with new 'catchy' names.

@jerry you guys are at least partially connected to facebook, no? I mean as a 30+ year tech worker I created an account on infosec years ago, but when you... were willing to connect with facebook and the rest of the shit internet that we literally came here to get away from, this ended my use of your instance immediately. "Infosec"? lol no, not really.

Perhaps look into that, and more people would feel willing to use or even financially support your instance? Just a thought.

@RussianDeepStateSock I created an instance that blocks Threads (Infosec.space). It has a whopping 65 active accounts. There are 16000 active accounts on .exchange, so while I dont doubt a few people left, it’s really not many. And I can’t please everyone.

@jerry as a career tech worker, I can explain, and you probably could, too.

The costs of switching, friend. When you hit critical mass (over 10k accounts), the "cost" to those accounts to leave and try to migrate AGAIN, after just migrating and finding peace, is too high for most of them. You can giggle about the analytics all you want, but we arent giggling about the connections to facebook and we arent supporting your instance because of it.

No, you certainly cant please everyone, so just cater to the mainstream, cater to unethical decisions that you could steer the other way, and cater to people for whom surveillance capitalism is a-ok.

@jerry A very good idea. Those of us who self host individual instances will have to be content with our medals.

@jerry I am enjoying my subscription to Orchids+ -- I mean, infosec.exchange!

@jerry Just wanted to ninja reply that... you're a pillar of the fediverse community. If I wasn't already on Hachyderm, I'd be on one of the infosec.* services.

@tehstu thanks for that. Hachyderm is a good place - I’m glad your here too
