@GottaLaff 1/2
MSM is failing us.
H5N1, bird flu has mutated and jumped to mammals like minks, seals, foxes, skunks, raccoon, pigs and of course is in birds.
.You should never handle dead birds or wildlife.
It is in cattle. It has been found in raw milk and pieces of it in pasteurized milk.
Switching to a plant based milk alternative is an option.
If you have stopped wearing a mask you should begin again because bird flu is a virus, like covid.

@PeanutBurnham@Snowshadow@GottaLaff This, a thousand percent. When we do, we are giving in to arrogant superiority and its toxic justifications while ingesting fear and anxiety and all its accompanying shock endocrines of our victims. That doesn't even begin to address the filth that is factory-farmed flesh.
@kristen_d@Snowshadow@GottaLaff The evil and cruelty is beyond intolerable. (So much so that - I apologize for my weakness, but I know this from experience - I just can’t look at it or discuss it in detail without derailing my mental health. I give to organizations that fight it but can’t look at their mailings.) Greed is one reason it’s hard to fight; another is the fallacy of the zero-sum equation. No, there isn’t a limited amount of compassion in the universe, all of which should be spent on humans. Every act of compassion lays the groundwork for more.
@PeanutBurnham@Snowshadow@GottaLaff Not weak - also not desensitized which is a gift in these callous times. I, too, have to limit my exposure to triggering imagery because of its destabilizing effect on my perspective and the accompanying depression. Take good care of yourself.
@Snowshadow@deborahh Just be aware that the calcium additive in plant based milk are not being absorbed into bones like they should, and can build up in arteries and cause heart issues.
I drank almond milk for years before my nutritionist son informed me.
I've also heard that dairy milk calcium isn't as well absorbed as once assumed. For kids, of course, it matters. But I stopped getting my calcium from milk many years ago ¯\ _ (ツ)_/¯
@Snowshadow@GottaLaff a nutritionist I follow pointed out that the ones made from grains (oat, rice) are carb-heavy and can mess with blood sugar/insulin. So I went for almond - though I had to hunt to find one that''s UNsweetened.
@stephanie@deborahh@Snowshadow My son is has a Masters in Nutritional Science. My dr. agreed with him. If you do a deep dive in different calciums (carbonate vs citrate, for ex) you'll find out what is the best. Citrate. I only take citrate supplements, but supplements are to be taken only in limited quantities, again per my dr.
@GottaLaff@stephanie@Snowshadow so many people take carbonate, which is like ground stone, right? Cheap, but not assimilable. The new mineral formulations with biglycinate are also good. My iron and mag are -biglycinate, and my doc likes that.
@stephanie I agree, actually. But because he's my son and I trust him, and because he's invested because he has Crohn's and does amazing research into nutrition, I give him more credit than the average nutritionist. He got his master's in nutritional science, so he's not a nutritionist. He's a nutritional scientist (not practicing). @deborahh@Snowshadow
@stephanie So all I can do is offer up what my son has told me after having done a deep dive on his own. And since my dr. agreed, I stick with citrate until something new comes out. @deborahh@Snowshadow
@GottaLaff@deborahh@Snowshadow I also missed that it was your son and only saw nutritionist, which can be anyone with no education in Canada. I really didn't mean to insult your son
@GottaLaff@deborahh@Snowshadow lol it's good, everything was resolved quickly! :) I totally agree about calcium supplements, I remember seeing that before (the different place they come from).
I'm assuming that for someone who doesn't use a lot of milk, it would still be pretty fine to use almond milk (cow's milk is also not as good as we once thought it was). Heh, everything in moderation!
@stephanie@deborahh@Snowshadow I'm ONLY referring to calcium intake, no other reason to stop using plant milk. I only drink milk in quantity for the calcium.
@GottaLaff
Milk no longer appealed to me after I quit gluten due to a late life diagnosis of celiac-sprue. My calcium levels remained quite high because I eat so much broccoli. I do love buttermilk and yogurt, which I started eating again a couple years ago, but the only milk I use is in my tea. @stephanie@deborahh@Snowshadow
@GottaLaff yep, just checked the almond milk I ordered. Calcium carbonate. Good call. I'll see what other options I can find. @Snowshadow I am looking at your article now.
@GottaLaff@Snowshadow dunno. I'm not drinking it for the calcium, so I prefer one without that additive. When I drank soy milk, I also used a French brand without calcium (or sugar) added. It was just soy beans, water, salt (maybe added gum for texture?). It was lovely!
@GottaLaff@Snowshadow so … I bought the Silk half-and-half "cream" (it's oat and coconut, no added calcium). Put it in my hot coffee and … it curdled? Oops, fridge door was ajar last night :-(
¯\ _ (ツ)_/¯ tasted normal, tho. Well, like oats, not cream. Will take some getting used to.
@GottaLaff@Snowshadow LOL. The fat content is what I'm looking for, I like the mouth-feel in my hot drinks. And I avoid the calcium additives. So between you and me we'll keep all the varieties in business 🤪
@deborahh Try Natur-a it is Canadian made and I never had a problem with it. Silk brand is over priced and watered down...all their products. If you can't get Natru-a try Earth's Own. Also, Silk brand is sold refrigerated , at least I have never seen it on the shelf. the other brands are shelf-stable so look on the regular shelves not the refrigerated section. @GottaLaff
@GottaLaff Thanks for this. I wonder why I have Never seen it on grocery store shelves ,only in the fridge section. Odd. Maybe it isn't as shelf-stable as they claim.
Surely corps wouldn't lie.
@GottaLaff@deborahh@Snowshadow I like almond milk, but I'm not wild about the fact that it mostly comes from California, is a very water intensive crop, and heavy agricultural water use in California isn't a sustainable plan. Canada grows lots of oats so I like that too.
@deborahh Move away from almond milk if you can;t find it ...there are no problems finding unsweetened oat, soy and coconut milk. Look online.@GottaLaff
@Snowshadow@deborahh Problem with even unsweetened oat and coconut milk is fat content/cholesterol. And again, I am meticulous about the kind of calcium added to these.
I'd much prefer oat or coconut milk, but the carb content is higher too.
@deborahh@Snowshadow@GottaLaff "Oat milk contains a good quantity of fatty acids, protein, minerals, vitamins, dietary fiber, and a variety of micronutrients and provides several health benefits, as it reduces blood sugar, lowers cholesterol"
"In 2021, B.C. officials announced an end to mink farming across the province, saying the farms can be reservoirs for viruses and represent an ongoing danger to public health. All mink farm operations must be shut down, with all of the pelts sold, by April 2025."
A concern seems to be pigs and what happens if meat supply is infected.
@GottaLaff@Snowshadow They found pieces, not whole viruses, which is why the FDA says it's still safe to drink. Headlines are making people panic. Headlines should be focusing more on making those drinking raw milk reconsider their life choices. The pasteurization process is still making milk safe to drink.
@GottaLaff In any situation you know you could be exposed, this is the one you want to wear a mask and shield for because its transmission is both airborne and fomite. ( #COVID has very low surface transmission) A benefit people miss w/ shields is they stop you from touching your eyes, nose & mouth. Shields work both as a barrier & that one extra step that helps you remember not to. Fomite virus transmission that results in illness is a numbers game. Less touching = less virus transmission.
@GottaLaff
The thing to remember is that COVID ravages the immune system. Some researchers have called it AIDS Lite. All this mass reinfection society has decided to do for brunches has really opened the door for other diseases, including bird flu.
@jimvernon Oh, never mind: "The FDA has approved a vaccine designed to protect against the avian flu, but the vaccine isn’t currently available to the public. Experts recommend that the vaccine be used if H5N1 begins to spread among people."
@GottaLaff OH crap....a mammal. Not a good sign. Did you see this? Don't agree with his opinion on all govt but there are very valid points here...I was about to finally stop wearing a mask...but nah, I'm used to it now....always wear in stores, drs offices, etc
@GottaLaff TY! Same. This new info stopped my starting to get a bit lazy! Getting ready to fly again for first time since Jan and Feb so will def be masking through it all! Anyone know if we should be re-boosting for Covid, too? My last at end of Oct? It might be time.
@GottaLaff
Meaning: We, the Humans around here, are in deep trouble.
Just thinking of the Covid-19 fiasco, we are not ready for this.
( maybe never will be either )
Herd Immunity become the thinning of the herd.
@GiddingsMJ Maybe. BBC: "Relatively few people have caught the virus so far, but it has had a high mortality rate in those that do: more than 50% of people known to become infected have died. "
@GottaLaff@GiddingsMJ the last article I saw said that 463 out of 889 cases resulted in death over the past ten years, from 23 reporting countries. Mortality rates vary from 52 to 56 percent, depending on the time period you choose.
@kimlockhartga@GottaLaff@GiddingsMJ Early estimates of death rates are often overstated. What it usually means is that 50% of the people who got sick enough to require testing and hospitalization die. As with COVID, most of the people infected probably don't get sick enough to realize they have something unusual, and therefore get excluded from the statistics.
@GottaLaff@kimlockhartga@GiddingsMJ Not that I'm planning to take any chances should it become more common. Staying healthy is the best way not to die.
@GottaLaff@GiddingsMJ it was quoted in the BBC article I boosted this morning. 50% of those known to have contracted it. It feels like a soft stat. Still, worth noting.
@GottaLaff@deborahh Oh, yes it is definitely worrisome. I just went through the links from that story through to the WHO and I have yet to find where the 50% death rate is reported. I have never stopped wearing a mask in public places.
@GiddingsMJ@GottaLaff I still mask too. People have forgotten Covid completely, look astonished that I'm masking. (Yesterday I even masked while walking on our main street - I have such bad pollen allergies, why not? LOL)
It means I don't attend any indoor networking event, especially with food. It's a shame. But this brain is the only one I've got and I really need it.
@deborahh@GiddingsMJ@GottaLaff NFL I’ve been wearing one at the climbing gym, originally because it’s indoors with poor ventilation, but more recently also because they do a great job of filtering out the chalk dust. It’s so nice to finish up and not be blowing black crap out of my nose for a few hours!
I also wear mine to vacuum, it reduces my horror at the pollen I'm kicking up (despite the hepa filter).
Edit: I have a [breathe] mask, and was using aerosol filters for covid. When I read the eildfire smoke forecast for Ontario this summer, I ordered some PM2.5 particulate filters. Better for pollen, as well. 👍
@pmonks@GiddingsMJ@GottaLaff my problem with being stared at is that (as a life coach) I'm highly attuned to body language and people's expressions. I try to turn it off in public, but it's harder when it's directed at me.
Yesterday, at a rally for the environment, I noticed I am getting better at ignoring it, and congratulated myself, LOL. It seems to become just part of life for me now.
@deborahh I've never stopped wearing masks, am often the only one in a store doing so, and never got a "look" from anyone. If I did, I wouldn't care. My health comes first, not their idiocy. @pmonks@GiddingsMJ
Some older data, but chilling. Here is where the rubber might meet the road with mRNA vaccines, as in 'either get vaccinated, or face a 50/50 chance of surviving.'
No guessing which half of the herd gets thinned, in that case!
@GottaLaff This is going to absolutely upend the ecosystem, which is already disrupted by the reduction of insects, a main food source for birds. This type A avian influenza has already made the jump to mammals so quickly. It's sobering.
Now add to that people having #LongCovid and the immunosuppressive effectives of #Covid and the removal of previously existing protections and rules re: infectious diseases because we let #CovidDeniers dominate politricks and policymaking and I sincerely hope it'll just be 50% mortality and not worse...
@CatHerder I knew him for a short time. He wanted me to be in a movie he wrote, so we’d hang out and just joke around and talk all the time, do voices to each other. He ran his black cornflake joke by me, and when I said i loved it, he told me he’d keep it.
I adored him.
The movie ended up being moved to Canada, so I never got to be part of it, but he did send me a photo of himself that said, “How nice that you’re mentally ill also.”
