That's the crux of it, ain't it? Assuming he would potentially be facing a conviction, if he manages to delay long enough and wins an election, he'd certainly have an incentive to try and hold power indefinitely. A lot of 'if's in there, but the prospect is still unsettling.

Wouldn't it be the plot twist of the Millenium if the supreme court actually considers Trump disqualified under the 14th amendment? The chaos that would ensue is just unimaginable.

That’s why they’ll never do it, no matter how Constitutionally sound the argument for barring him is. Violence is an acceptable political tactic in the 21st Century, apparently.
