RGB3x3 , in GOP-led states want to regulate posting on social media. The Supreme Court will decide if they can

Social media sites should just stop operating in those states that want to regulate the way people use them. Watch how fast the regulations change if they do that

SpaceNoodle , in US sues to block merger of grocery giants Kroger and Albertsons, saying it could push prices higher

This merger would eliminate all grocery competition in my area. It's already bad enough that Kroger swallowed up all of the local chains.

givesomefucks , in US sues to block merger of grocery giants Kroger and Albertsons, saying it could push prices higher

We need to limit the total revenue a corporation can have.

Even something crazy high like 100 billion. You hit that line, no more expansion.

They'd have to decide if they want to concentrate in one area or spread nationwide. And places like Walmart and Amazon would never exist.

Ganondorf ,

Sounds good on paper but in the 80s/90s the US people were told 401ks are better than pensions. Now in order to retire we all have to cheer on non-stop expansion of corporations or we can never retire.

Or we could, get this, tax the rich and build out an actual social safety net.

Won’t someone rid us of this meddlesome politician?

Good. Fuck this asshat with a rusty cheese grater. Now do the supreme court.

reddig33 , in Donald Trump appeals $454 million judgment in New York civil fraud case

Is this one of those appeals where he has to pre-pay the original judgement (or more likely put up ten percent as a bond)?

Therealgoodjanet , in Illinois judge who reversed rape conviction removed from bench after panel finds he circumvented law

Vaughan said that the judge told the court “this is what happens whenever parents allow teenagers to drink alcohol, to swim in pools with their undergarments on,”

Yeah we don’t need that dude in a position of power. Good riddance.

While no individuals should ever be that wealthy to begin with, it's good to see some of them are capable of letting it go in their old age and returning it to the community rather than selfishly hording it.

apis ,

Sounds like it was her husband who hoarded the wealth, and that she gave it up once he left it to her.

So though she'd have benefitted greatly from being married to someone so rich, that money wasn't under her control until he died.

Seems her own work was worthwhile to the community.

rather than selfishly hording it.

Make no mistake, even those who give away sums that to us seen unimaginable, are still doing that.

RememberTheApollo , in New York medical school eliminates tuition after $1bn gift

But textbooks are still $1,500 and there are $50k in fees.

/s. Sorta.

It’s a great gift, but tuition isn’t the only expense.

Voyajer ,

Hopefully PDFs of medical textbooks are as easy to find as they are for engineering textbooks.

admiralteal ,

With a huge pot of money infinitely annuitized like this, they could literally be paying their students to attend.

Maybe that's the next frontier. Hopefully. It's definitely the best way to ensure access to education for the poor.

Is there a lemmy version of r/OrphanCrushingMachine ?

raccoona_nongrata , in Ukrainian troops pull back again as Russia's onslaught pushes ahead in eastern Ukraine
@raccoona_nongrata@beehaw.org avatar

Not "again", this was anticipated as part of the loss of Avdiivka, Ukraine is just pulling back to the fortified defense lines they had prepared, which are beyond some villages in a no man's land.

KyoStarr , in Donald Trump appeals $454 million judgment in New York civil fraud case

Just to make an important distinction, Trump's lawyers submitted a notice of appeal which shows their intent to appeal the ruling. They actually haven't posted the bond to actually do this yet but many news sites are glossing over this detail.

MyTurtleSwimsUpsideDown , in RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel will leave her post on March 8 as Trump moves to install new loyalists

RNC is definitely going to cover his legal judgements now.

SaltySalamander ,
@SaltySalamander@kbin.social avatar

RNC has about $15m. Don't think that's going to go very far.
